Childhood memories flood back to me. My grandmother absolutely loved this song. I especially like the fact that you posted the record - not a TV or updated digital version. Love the crackles of the phonograph...
Brings back the sounds of a percolator, or a rotary dial phone...
@devlinsakey Perhaps you think the Browns' version is "kitschy...faux traditionalism," and to each his own, I suppose; if you wish to hear it in the original French with a less countrified arrangement, choose one of the Edith Piaf versions and then tell me what you think.
Lovely song from my childhood. Woke me up on WOWO Fort Wayne,Indiana on the Little Red Barn Program with Bob Sievers and Jay Gould. Thanks so much for posting!
If you like this marvellous version, have also a look at the french original by the great Edith Piaf accompagnied by Les Compagnons de la Chanson. The version in the link isn't the original from 1946, it's recorded in the mid '50s. Enjoy.
@THEREDNIG Awesome! Too much black, goth, mean and hate filled "music" out there. Some songs are really alright for any generation. Love em. But I sure wish we lived in a day that appreciated this. (Its before my time by the way)
finally i have found it.... thank you very much for this upload.... all i had to go by till i heard it on the radio a few mins ago was bom bom bom and jimmy and bells....!
A #1 song for The Browns in August/September 1959. Well, a new generation of high schoolers are entering in as freshmen. They were in junior high/middle school when the Rock Era began. What will the next 4 years bring? Only time would tell.
@mkl62 well in 1964, the beatles would should up. They would turn rock and roll upside down. Every rock and roll group pre 1964 made soft music and it was good.
When the Beatles came to america, February 7th,1964 fans went crazy. Of course they were on Ed Sullivan show on Feb 9th,1964. I'm 29 yrs old, yes I've been listening to the oldies music since high school
@kcaruso37 I was highlighting mainly the Class of 1963. The Class of 1959 had graduated. Now, a new generation would take the mantle. Ditto for 1967 and 1973. 1967 was 12 years of school and 1973 was birth year (1955). And it is still going. However, The Browns and the rest didn't have American Idol and America's Got Talent. They had to bust their behinds, sometimes for little or nothing (crooked promoters). And black artists had to deal with racism in some places.
The canonical message of this sing-song verse has finally eclipsed the ecclesiastical shenanigans of our nemesis the Pope... and no, I refer not to the current Pope, but rather "Pope John Paul the Great," or, in layman's terms, Pope John Paul II, or, in reality, Cardinal Rickhardt Schlitz, the Polish vagabond.
one of the best songs ever made! i have been looking for this song for 8 years since i heard it on the time life classic country collection informercial. all i could remember of the song was "bom bom bom bom, all the chapel bells were ringing, in the little valley town". finally tonight i have found it along with their performance of it on the Grand Ole Opry. The Sound is very good on this one too. there seems to be no noise reduction, the clarity of the sound is extremly good for an old 45
I love my childhood memories as well Jeannie & I am 62 years old

Heh Heh... and yet... This kitschy piece of faux traditionalism was ripe for parody..
I prefer The Barron Knight's "All The Chapel Lead Was Missing" :)

I love this song! A mans birth, his marriage, and his death, and a little church rings it all out. So sweet!
