I managed to secure a copy of this for myself on VHS, Was supposed to make Television, but as mentioned Larry had the stroke that ended his & the 3 Stooges careers.
@ziggycat999 True but by the time Curly Joe Derita jioned up,The boys (Moe & Larry) were getting along in years & the emphasis became on a less physical & child-like/ friendly brand of comedy. I still enjoyed it. With each team, new changes came aboard.
I remember being a little kid in a antique store in Jackson CA and bought this vhs movie thinking it was just another normal three stooges movie but i really liked this and wish i still had this, it made me love them even more as a kid
This was not filmed in super 8 it was shot on 16 MM. the company that produced the DVD could only find a super 8 version. If anyone is interested I have a original 16 MM .. we believe it is the last one known to exist.
It would make a great series if Larry Fine have'nt suffered a stroke 40 years ago that caused the project to be aborted. Seeing the more mature Stooges was more memorable than ever.
There were a few years (very few) where the censors wouldn't allow violence on TV. They also wanted to adhere to some of the parents letters about kids possibly imitating their antics.
This film may be a classic but has no humor at all. Today they would probably take that ax and chain saw and have blood flying all over the place.
QUESTION----For those who don't like 'Curly-Joe' DeRita trio.......,Any idesa on who might of worked out better? Any known or semi-known comics from the 1950's-1960's come to mind? I thought of one....Somehow (even though he wouldn't have been a copy of Curly like the two Joe's), I think BUDDY HACKETT might have fit in...Somehow it just seems like it may have worked, in my opinion. Would love to hear other ideas....Since the 3rd Stooge role was SO nearly-impossible to fill!
I have to agree with Ukuelelmike. While anybody that loves the 3 Stooges would have hoped for a success with this, it's pretty bad! From what I know Larry suffered a stroke not long after filming this so that probably would have put the kabosh on a series anyway.
Actually this was filmed in a higher quality 16mm, still not great but considerably better then 8mm. In the 1980's it was released on super 8 mm for collectors. The original 16mm print is either lost or Maurer will not release it due to the court settlement on the rights to the Three Stooges. They had to goto collectors with these poor super 8 versions for source material for the video, but there is better prints in 16mm assuming the color has not faded.
They were just too old by 1970 when they made this film to do much physical comedy; Moe was in his early early 70s Larry was in his late 60s and Curly-Joe was in early 60s.
This was their only made-for-TV movie they made. This was more of a documentry than a comedy. If my memory serves me correctly, the background music was later used in spanish-speaking cartoons (Bugs Bunny and Popeye) during the mid 80's on Telemundo.
"Kook's Tour" was supposed to be the Stooges' next TV series, and this was indeed a "pilot film". Unfortunately, Larry did suffer a stroke before filming was completed. Norman Maurer {Moe's father-in-law and the Stooges' agent/producer} decided to salvage it by expanding it into an hour-long "feature" [with additional nature footage and narration by Moe], appearing in VERY limited theatrical release and 16mm rental for clubs and organizations, along with several 8mm "home movie" editions..
This isn't anything other than an early reality tv type of show. Which doesnt' surprise me. These guys were on top of things and ahead of their time ( or atleast on top in their time period. Either way , this is a classic keeper for all stooges fans. So spread out knuckleheads ! Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk....
Sad that they died broke and broken down. But everyone dies. Not every one really lives. They truly lived the life and will always live through their recorded preformances.
Disagree. Moe Howard was careful with his money, and he made sure that Curly and Larry Fine had money socked away. Moe apparently died with a sizable estate; Curly Howard and Larry Fine may not have died wealthy, but they weren't destitute, either.
agreed, Moe was very well off, Larry lived in a manner that he went through alot of money (expensive hotels with his wife Mabel etc.). Curly was not "rich" but Moe looked out for him after he had his stroke.
I know larry had a stroke a short time after this-maybe even during it.
Yeah, Larry had a stroke during the filming of this which left him partially paralyzes. I don't think the movie got completed or officially released because of that.
Pretty certain that the lady who litters is Moe's daughter Joan Maurer. Her artist husband Norman Maurer shaped the Stooges' post-comeback careers throughout the later years...
This is the only stooge film where Moe did'nt slap,Bop, poke, or try to tear their tunsil's out. Moe has finally gone easy on them & stop hitting them, Especially Larry. After all, Larry dos'nt have anymore hair left for Moe to pull or tear off. ha ha.
If I recall correctly, it was thought that Larry had had a couple of light strokes before 1970--I never thought about it until I read "One Fine Stooge." There are pictures from 1968-69 where he looks different than before. His voice sounds a bit different in the New 3 Stooges shows, and here as well.
Thank you for posting this and don't ever take it down. It was a real treat to us Stooges fans.
When Moe was shaving, he really looked like his brother Shemp. While I enjoy Curly Joe, all I kept thinking was what it would be like to watch this with Curly or Shemp in it.
They say that Moe Howard's daughter, Joan, has a small role in the movie Kook's tour with the Three Stooges. Which character did she play? Was she the lady that littered in the park and then beat up on Curly Joe?
Maybe someday the original negative will turn up. At any rate, let's turn the 8mm later-generation into a positive. (Whyyyy youuuu!...). Great concept and revealing: Stooges' slapstick just as funny without the slap schtick.
So cool to see this. There was a mention of this project and a still photo in Moe Howard's book. It was shot and directed by Norman Maurer, Moe's son-in-law, and he has a small cameo part in this film. Maurer also directed a couple of the Stooge's early 1960's features for Columbia. Larry had recovered from one stroke at this point, you can hear it in his voice.
They used a stand-in for him for a few scenes showing a person's back, hands, etc. They did the same thing with Shemp, creating episodes after he was dead.
Looks like a fun camping trip to me LOL. That would have been awesome to have been alive around that time and went on a camping trip with Moe and Larry. Who was filming this?
Um, it came from a special edition Stooge DVD pack. It was in a metal container with a book and other films. Forgot the exact name of it. You should be able to find it at Amazon com or somewhere similar. Kooks Tour lasts for about an hour.

This was a pilot episode for a proposed TV show in 1970 which would feature the "retired" Three Stooges (although they would occasinally slip back into character) traveling to some scenic spots throughout the country and later the world. Unfortunately, Larry Fine suffered a stroke before filming could be completed, so the idea of a series was scrapped. I have the whole episode. At the end, Moe does a wrap-up from his desk, addressing the camera. "Next time, we're going to visit Japan. Sayonara!"
This suggests that it was headed for TV as a series.
