First of all, the only way to "hurt" a golden eagle with a helicopter with a helicopter is to hit it. Which did not happen. Secondly. There is no laws stating he cant fly right up to a nest.
@dfeers I just wonder why people as yourself cant educate themselves before commenting on something they know nothing about. Another words, why dont you educate yourself before opening your butt hole to speak?
"Possibly causing injury to Golden Eagles" - but you don't actually know do you? You didn't do any kind of research or follow-up investigation. You're just a hack videographer, who just uploaded this video to youtube and put a catchy title on it. Do you know what that helicopter was doing there? It could have even been trying to catch poachers or vandals that were hurting the eagles!!! You might want to think next time, before you just upload and criticize what you know nothing about!
@iflixr Maybe instead of insulting me you could find your way over to Sheriff's Aviation at Gillespie Field and we could discuss this like adults over a cup of coffee. We are all aware of the Golden Eagles and we know the difference in how ducks fly in comparison to the eagles. Whereas ducks often fly in tight formations with rapid wing movement as the video shows, eagles are typically seen lazily using the updrafts as is provided by the slope of El Cajon Mountain.
@pinkpriss Great. You're familiar with the flight characteristics of the eagle. So you should have absolutely no problem agreeing that the two birds shown in this video are 100 percent ducks and in no way resemble the eagle. Just keeping on topic. The helicopter did not cause injury to the ducks and as was alleged by the poster of this video, the sheriff's department was not hired by SDGE to kill the golden eagle.
If we want to abate Sheriff helicopter activity in the El Capitan Preserve area we might want to close the area to hikers and climbers. The Sheriff, and SDFD, are typically in the area to search (or rescue) hikers and climbers in the same area as the nesting birds.
While I have no idea what ASTREA is doing in this particular video it's probably a training flight or actual incident.
So close the mountain during nesting season and reduce the risk to these birds...
@lksfirecapt1 USFS, FISH AND GAME, BLM don't have the balls to close anything. This is not the only area in the Cleveland National Forest that you'll find Active Eagle nest's. To close one area you would have to close all areas with Raptors. That is just not going to happen, to do so it would mean SDGE/SEMPRA would have to shut down the SRPL operation. William Metz is to big of a coward to go up against sempra. BTW SDGE helicopter has already killed a golden eagle in the Buckman Springs area.
You know what i think is messed up. nobody seems to care when the airplanes fly within 100 feet of the damn eagles nest. I've seen it and I know you have to bluespace because you were up there. You people just like picking on the ones who are working because you probably haven't worked your whole life or is this what you call a job? I would hate to see what you people would be like if you really had something to protect.
P.S. Where do you think all the power will come from to charge your cute little Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt, or whatever 'green' powered car you drive?? I hope the Sheriff Dept. sees this video, that way, if any of you ever get injured on one of your nature hikes and need assistance, they'll leave you to fend for yourselves.
Good effort lightning. But its not like I called the sheriff and told them to give me that angle. Its people like us who are tired of being lied too that will make a difference for the environment , for nature and humans, including you. Furthermore the power your talking about is not green its from NG in Mexico. The power company has tried to make it pretty for you, Truth is they are devastating the Cleveland National forest and our back yards to sell electricity to Los Angeles.
Your camerawork leaves alot to the imagination. It's impossible to tell how close that helicopter is to the birds when you're zooming in and out erratically, and shooting from a convenient angle against a featureless background. You environmentalists will paint whatever picture you want in order to stop progress. If you 'nature lovers' had any clue about nature, you'd realize that eagles go through many molting cycles in their lives.
Of all the air space available it makes you wonder wtf are they thinking ? The birds seem to be reacting to they're presence. Aren't eagles still under the endangered act thingy ?

It appears as if the birds, there were two, flew up then flew down. Your percision on the accuracy of how close to the helo they were is severly off.

Good camera work considering the distance and it is a hand-held shot. Thanks for posting this. I'll forward it to my friends at the Sierra Club.
