These really aren't variations though... I know Hamelin knows better than me, but Beethoven specifically left out the word "variation" in the score. Regardless, the bit of insight about the subdivision of the theme is fascinating, and his playing is pure perfection.
My first thought upon hearing such a meager applause at the end, was that this audience is thoroughly devoid of musical feeling. Then, it occurred to me that they may just have been overwhelmed by what they have experienced with this exemplary performance.
Happy Birthday dear MARC-ANDRé, I have always kept you in my heart since I was a child.....I grew with your Alkan, Liszt and Medtner ( etc. ) and now I am happy see you playing Beethoven searching for your own way...thank you so much for all Mr Hamelin !!!!, marco puissa
wonderful video ! But It's very nice if you have a english subtitle for this video, I can't understand all of things he said :( p/s sorry for my bad english
@Sorcerer88 Would you mind making a summary in English about his comments? Unfortunately my German is very bad, I can't understand most the things he said :( Thanks a lot in advance.

Un aubergiste présentant une "bonne" bouteille à Liszt: "Voici notre meilleur Liszt!"
Et Franz de répondre: "Vous n'auriez pas un bon vieux Beethoven de derrière les fagots?!"

@MsGibbone To play something like that is always a godlike privilege. Let alone to listen to.

@MsGibbone sì, come gli hobbit: al loro compleanno fanno regali, mica li ricevono :D

My only problem with the variation section - Hamelin is working too hard to erase the "boogie woogie" feeling from that variation.

@lourak Funny... I just love that Hamelin is working soo hard to erase the "boogie woogie" feeling from that variation. :-D Good job Hamelin!

Hamelin has such a healthy approach to everything he touches. What a relief from all of the eccentricities out there - yes - even among the "greats".

This is very little applause, compared to Horowitz...

Lovely.
Interesting that he takes that final trill without right hand only. Is he cheating, or do the rest of us make it overly complicated? :)

Happy Birthday maestro ! I can't stop thinking that he explored the repertoire in 50 years more than I would in 10 lives !
