I plan on doing a show like this after my academic exams - using only 2 martin mac 250s, a couple of led parcans and a projector facing the audience as a strobe- programmed on this bit. ly/ mTFIja
@Timmy61317 This was really just a test drive of the ION for me, I did not have long to program it because I programmed it during the final exam period so I had lots of studying to do. I also think it's too effect based, but it's what I was able to do with the time I had. As for the busking, I love busking, but I also like a repeatable show like this - for live I'd never have everything timed out like this. Also, quite honestly, the ION is not that great for busking - even with a fader wing.
You say you did all the timing manually. Does this mean there is no MIDI sync between the audio source and the ION console? I haven't looked into timing yet on our ION, but I often use MTC sync on the express and it has worked well.
I mainly did this as a programming exercise, so getting the audio dead on for live playback was not critical; I was able to line the audio track up perfectly in the video editing software. The timing was done with follow cues on the ION, so it was not "manual" - everything executed itself after I pressed the initial go, so all of the times were recorded in to the console. When doing live light shows I will generally at least start the show with MTC via the MIDI port on the ION.
I can't imagine how intricate this programming is. This is really a great job. How did you like working with the ion? Our school is thinking about getting one. We have a large conventional rig with rented movers for our large shows.
Thanks! The 1/100 second timing of follows on the ION was definitely useful. Much better than the 1/10 second timing of follows on the Obsession and Expression series consoles. The ION brings ETC back as a major player in the mid-level console market. They lost that market when they didn't really release a console that could handle moving lights - the ION can, and it handles them with ease. It also does conventionals just as well as any older ETC board. Get one if you can!
I love doing both, and could see making a true career out of either. I'm currently keeping my options open as far as which I'll pursue full time (or be a master electrician at a theatre), but I will say that it's hard to keep me from giving my input from a design standpoint while programming for a dance concert, for instance.
you know, thats great. i am the same way.. but ive been in this industry for 2 years.... let me give you some advice.. its who you know... get to know everyone you can
Also, what part of the "industry" have you been in? With what kind of shows? I've worked a decent number of concerts at school as a local hand, have designed for theatre, dance, and music at college (I'll be a senior). Last dance concert rig had almost 400 fixtures. That was a lot of fun to drive!
Yeah, gobo shake is underappreciated. It can work really well for some things, and the Intellabeams have two speeds of it hidden away in their crazy insane dmx mapping of the gobo wheels.
I open up the music file in Adobe Audition, and find the exact points (either 30 or 100 frames per second depending on which method I'm using for playback) and write down the exact times. I then write all of the lighting cues in the lighting console, and then synchronize those to the times that I got before in Audition. Everything is manually timed.
This is awesome! What is your job? How did you get it? Can i come work for you? This is exactly what i've been trying to get into and i just can't seem to find a starting off point.
This was a show that I did for my own entertainment (and to put up here), so audience was not something I was concerned with. For all of our shows that use strobes and haze, we put warnings on all entrance doors. And I generally don't point any strobes that powerful right at the audience.
But considering how many times I watched parts of this show while programming, it really wasn't that bad on the eyes.
ohh yeahh i love the 3000's and i finally got a chance to work with 18 Mac 3's on my lateest show and i had VL 3500's and 3000's rite next to them and the mac's had about 65% more output amazing what martin came up with
Very nice! How many cues did you have for this?

The theatre I work in uses an Ion. Our show is programed, and using SMPTE from an Alesis, it runs itself.

yea looks good - suprised it was programed using a ion
personaly i think it is too effect based - it is notisable
also why did you have to sync it all with time code - could part of it be busked

Why would there be someone who has light triggered epileptic seizures at a light show?
I on the other hand like the strobe effect!

I love the ION, but im still native to hog 3, and i think you need to give those intells and nice lamp change especially the one on the top right
ROSSTBLITZ 3 years ago
All of the lamps are brand new. Mix of HSR700s and MSR700s on the Ibeams.
soundlight 3 years ago
oh well i only said that because the color temp looked off on the top right and bottom left Ibeams at 1:48 mabby it was the cam.
ROSSTBLITZ 3 years ago
Those are probably the MSRs then. HSR 700 is 6000K with a CRI of 85. MSR 700/SA is 5600K, CRI of 80.
