I just realized that Chip and Dale DO actually hold something of a conversation in their interaction in this cartoon; the problem with subsequent cartoons in which they appear (featuring Donald and/or Mickey) was that the animators reused their dialogue here over and over again, to make them appear more inintelligible; until, eventually, they were each given a voice, all the way up to Chip 'N Dale's Rescue Rangers.

For funpool18: You're right-the chipmunks do look like twins; however, in some of the cartoons, look closely, and you may notice that they're noses are different colors. In those cases, Chip has the little "chip" of a black nose, and Dale has the big red one. :)

this was one of the very original toons where the chipmunks were introduced. it was only later on when they became popular in their own right that their image was transformed to make them more individual. then finally they were given the ultra makeover as they appear in "the rescue rangers"

Yeah I never got it either. But Disney never really was a classic business for making sense. Just appealing to kids and finding the inner kid in their parents.
