I love you input on the subject of rats (also love your Pit Bull comment, I own a rescued Pibble who is such a sweet heart). People are just so ignorant when it comes to rats, who are probably one of the cleanest and affectionate pets you can have.

I need some advice on my rattie, he has myco and his meds dont seem to be making much of a difference.... only very little, he is still sneezing often and has so much trouble breathing threw his nose, is there any advice you can give me towards my rats survival? can you tell me about any rat you have owned that has died from this disease and how you helped your rat while suffering? thanks !

Some people are a bit ignorant about rats. When I was little I was going to get a pet rabbit but ended up getting rats and they were just like any other pet! All my friends used to say eww because of their tails but that was a bit silly :P

Great vid! Wish more people were informed and didn't talk out of their ss lol. I just disagree with the whole no-animal testing. Of course I believe that all life is sacred and has a purpose. And I'm against cruelty to animals. But when it comes to medical research I have to say I'm okay with medical testing. But product testing on animals is just stupid! Recollection that my first pet, it was a white rate that they gave me when it had only 5 years, but I was charmed with, was passing hours looking at her and speaking it and she always seemed to be attentive of everything what she was saying to her :) I do not deal because there are any persons they give them disgust the rates ... they say that they transmit diseases, but really it are a few very clean very clever animals and overcoat.

it all, Depends on where you get the Rat,but when you do decide to get a pet rat adopting or buying make sure you have Money on the side for a vet.becuase rats can get some of the things humans can get.

--- so people say. Honestly, I enjoyed them. They were intelligent, friendly (after the incident), and learned some tricks. My dad honestly would've died if we didn't take him to the emergency room, when it is a "disease" that is cured easily with antibiotics. Honestly, I know you ALWAYS have to be careful with ANY animal. Hydrogen peroxide on any bite,etc. Any animal can have any bacteria or disease which can get you sick/kill you.

Actually, It is true they can have diseases EVEN pet ones. I had rats as pets, long story short, My dad got bit by one, washed his hand, etc. A few days later got flu like symptoms. We didnt think twice about it. To shorten it up, unless you'd like to discuss this more, He ended up in ICU. We told the docs he got bit, but they said 'oh its a pet one, it should be healthy'. He would've died without ME diagnosing him. I did the research, he got rat bite fever, which is only in 'wild rats'---

@Elodee123 rat bite fever is a very common disease. Especially in NYC, and it's a very common diagnosis there. I'm sorry your father had it. Pet rats can transmit it but it's more common that feral rats do, or rats from a mill transmit it though.

You're awesome in every since of the word ^_^. Rat's have such bad reputations because of ignorant people who feel the need to speak their minds on an issue they know very little about. Yes, rats make great pets, but they do cost alot with all the vet bills.. that's the only downside in owning a rat.. the poor immune system and short lifespan :(.

Rats do not "come" with health problems. That's like saying "dogs come with health problems." Sure, they can develop cancer later in life, but then again, any pet (or person) can get cancer, not just rats.

Rats are actually very healthy and clean little animals if you take proper care of them. They spend more of their time washing themselves and like to keep their nests in order :) So, no, rats do not "come" with health problems.

I just said they *can* come down with health problems, just like any other creature on the planet, however, they are generally a healthy animal. All my rats, with 1 exception, have never had cancer. Dogs, cats, & horses have more veterinary issues than rats, based on my experiences.

Wet tail is a disease that young hamsters get from living in dirty conditions, resulting in tail mold & diarrhea. It is extremely unlikely for a rat to get wet tail and I have not heard of anyone's rats getting it.

Secondly, as I have been saying forever, any animal on earth can get a disease - orcas, horses, rhinos, giraffes, etc. Rats are usually pretty hearty beings unless they live in bad conditions, such as at a run-down pet store or breeder mill. I have had more than 10 years experience with almost every kind of rodent.

I don't see what you're arguing about it. It doesn't matter the health of an animal for people to love then. For example, horses are very prone to injury but that doesn't stop thousands of people from buying horses and loving them, correct?

i like this video. But I have a sorta of off topic question, since it seems you know your stuff what if a mouse has like..hm I don't know how to say, it's not a bump but kind of like a bite. Can you dissenfect it so the wound wont get affected? If so what would you put on it?

First, separate the mouse from the other mice, putting him or her into a smaller cage so the wound can heal. Provide ample food and water. I recommend gently cleaning the open wound with warm (not hot) water on a wash cloth. Just dab it lightly and just that area, not the whole mouse. If its not an open wound, it is likely cancer. Some of my foster rats have had cancer - its common as they get older. You can take her to the vet (it's inexpensive to cure mouse cancer).

Tumors aren't always cancer! Most of the time they are fatty, benign tumors.

It is more possibly an abscess if there is a wound... Either way, a vet visit is in order!

If you think the bump is cancer, put the mouse on a vegan diet - its what I do with my adopted rats. Feed her mouse food/pellets, in addition to small pieces of tomato, blueberries, cabbage, and flax seeds (natural cancer fighting foods). Dont give her fatty yogurt drop treats or things of that sort :)

Best of luck with your mice. And if you don't want to visit a vet, you can just call in the office and ask them what you can do at home for her.

My cousin owned a rat and i saw it when i went over once - a very docile animal, didn't smell, wasn't diseased or anything. Very cute :)

These same, uneducated people used to believe that German Shepherds, and other breeds, are vicious - why don't you give them a try before judging them all? Jeez, people are dumb.

Funny how people talk about Rats (and other animals) spreading disease...sure, animals do spread disease but, in my 42 years, I have been sick a few dozen times and, the source of each illness (other than a couple cases of food poisoning from my pre-Vegan days) has been another Human being. Seems to me that People are the biggest spreaders of disease now.
