Ok, can someone please, please, please explain something to me? This originally aired on British television before it came to the U.S. Helen deservedly received many awards, I think as much as one can, for this mini-series over here; aka ... Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG-but she did not receive one award in Britain. She wasn't even nominated for a Television BAFTA. But the series received BAFTA awards on its own but nothing on the acting. Why? This is driving me absolutely crazy! Thanks!
I have to say, THIS movie was what got me interested me in British History. Now in my Brit History class, I'm reading a biography of her (planning to read those of Henry VIII and Mary I) and it makes her even fascinating.
The acting (special mention to Mirren and Irons), costumes, scenery, music make this a masterpiece. Much down to earth that the Cate Blanchet one.
Also like that it only focuses on a part of her reign than cradle to the grave.
Even as an elderly woman Helen Mirren is very attractive.
I am disappointed that no one so far has commented on the music of the opening theme, which is as beautiful as possible. Viols are gone, but hell ... where are the guitarists?
Helen also played Queen Charlotte in the "Madness of King George" - amazing that someone who was raised as anti monarchist should play 3 Queens of England
Indeed. Although, I think by seeing her interviews and so on that she has changed her feeling towards the monarchy, especially after playing and understanding our present Queen, Elizabeth II. She now calls herself - "Queenist" rather than "monarchist" because of the respect she has now for Her Majesty.
there is a certain song that im lookin for. it is that song that is played at the end of wen elizabeth is staring out the window after essex's exucution and it played for a bit in the 1st part of this video at 1:40 and only last for a few seconds
The soundtrack is fantastic! I emailed HBO asking where we could get the music but haven't received a response. If anyone knows where to get the music, please share with us.
I think Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons are both terrific actors. He had the perfect voice for Scar. She nails Queen Elizabeth's personality and looks. I want this miniseries for Christmas! Does anyone know where I can get it?
AWESOME mini-series. Should've gone to theaters after its debut on TV. Helen Mirren & Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons (Best Actor, "Reversal Of Fortune") were excellent, as was the rest of the cast. I love period films and this one was extraordinarily well-researched and acted. I highly recommend it.
i love Elizabeth shw was not a fanatic at all. i don't think she gave a Damm about catholic or protestant she knew england would would never be strong if their were constant fighting over religion . i feel the same way . great clip
@bearcub410 yeah, she was never interested in religion, she was interested in art, dancing and music, that's why Shakespear, whose work would have seen as blasphormous otherwise by that period, was fully supported by her therefore he could always do whatever he wanted :)
@bearcub410 I would do a little more research on the matter, if I were you. Actually, Queen Elizabeth I persecuted the Catholics as cruelly as her half sister, Queen Mary, persecuted the protestants. Hundreds and hundreds of Catholics were tortured and killed in the most horrific manner imaginable during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. However, we cannot judge her as we live in a different era.
@KatiaTiutiunnik you may be right , but i believe it had more to do that catholics were not loyal subject to elizabeth , they would have rather had a catholic king or queen on the throne , i believe that is why they were persecuted , so many plots at that time were hatched by catholics that wanted to bring england back to the catholic church , i do not believe elizabeth was a fanatic ,and i was raise catholic LOL
I LOVE this series! Mostly because I love anything about Elizabeth I, but I think this is my fave! I think Helen and Jeremy are so suited to the roles of Robert Dudley and the Queen and the do it SO well!
