Some utilities offer to install thermostats that will shut off the AC for a certain amount of time during peak time.

It cycles the turn off intelligently throughout the city to prevent brown/blackouts, and reduce the need for those extra load baring stations.

The amount of time the AC is cut off is near unnoticable.

Its optional and works well without increasing customer cost.

Utilities can promote CFLs over old school bulbs, or in austin, discounts are given for such bubs, which save much more then the discount is worth over a years use.

Basically, promotion of standards that may not be known by all is cheap and saves alot in electricity usage.

I dont even know all of them, but its not hard to imagine ways to help customers save energy with small costs.

Also, try to think long term savings, not just short term costs.
