@mssmithstud I was a bit surprised at the Eiffel Tower scene being shot by Lester but apart from that scene and this scene in question I thought Lester didn't give much to Superman 2.
@msmithstud. Many thanks for that. I don't know what you thought of Donner's version but I thought there weren't many decent shots by Lester with this being an example of such. I was very glad indeed to watch the Donner cut! Much better version
@Jimjones1980 agreed. However, there were a few things about Lester's version i prefered. One being Lois' discovery of Clark's identity after he falls into the fire, the destructuring scene when he loses his powers. The detail shown of him losing his powers was neat looking, in Donner's version, it didn't show anything. However, Donner is a much better director and Lester should have stuck to comedies instead. Lester was one reason SIII failed. The gags at the beginning were over the top.
@msmithstud Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and Jack O'Halloran were very bitter about Donner being let go and were vocal about it. Margot says she was cut out of III because of her opinion but the salkinds said it was because they had no need for her character in III since Clark's love interest was Lana Lange. Hackman refused to return to II with Lester and O'Halloran was considering not returning as well.
The alley scene is the best "changing" sequence of all. Love how the music gradually builds up to a crescendo. Great that the horrible shot has been replaced with the STM/SR shots
@Jimjones1980 i know this answer is long past due, but Lester directed this scene and all scenes regarding the Eiffel Tower. In the Donner Cut, the villains escape the phantom zone when Superman throws one of the missles into space from part 1.
This is the best Clark Kent-to-Superman transformation ever done for the screen (small and silver). It looks like a comic book panel as done by Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson.
how can he make his clothes disappear? i did not know he was a magician. I just always thought he would hide them somewhere and then get them back when he wanted to return to clark kent.
In the Silver and Bronze age comics, Superman super-compressed Kent's clothes into a small folded bundle and put them in a pocket in the cape along with the glasses. There was a bit from a never-finished 1940s comic where a bum starts to steal Kent's clothes in an alleyway, but Superman shows up before it's too late.
Not bad...the only thing was that end flyby from SIII was unnecessary. It didn't match the sound effects either. Also, there is no way that quick change was filmed before Donner signed on...clearly Reeve looks older and bigger than even the earliest footage from Superman The Movie.
He didn't say that the shot was filmed by Guy Hamilton, only the effect was designed by him and his fx team. Reeve wasn't even on the project when Hamilton was developing it. Check out the DVD docs if you haven't already, they're pretty interesting.
Looks very good, and I liked it a lot. I hope Donner sees that somehow and thinks twice about using something similar in a future SII revision perhaps?
Yep, the one from my childhood that has that effect on me is his first public appearance; the helicopter sequence in the first one, so I know the kind of feeling you mean. I love your improvements.
That changing effect was originally created by Guy Hamilton's (the first director attached to the project) effects team. When Donner came aboard he chucked it.
Nails, Mr. Ellesmore! That's really an improvement. Did you know that the effect used right there as he changes into Supes was rejected by Donner in the first one 'cuz he didn't feel it looked good enough? Lester didn't give a hoot, though.

I hope and I'll love to see in the Donner's version the villains rule the world scene, perhaps is the most important scene and the most geat scene never shot, easy to do today with CGI technology.
Mr Thau if you read Youtube, please ask to the warner if you can re-create this scene.
in the new Brando scenes, i presume, you must create new special effects for the superman loss of power and for the death of the jor - el spirit, so you can use CGI to villains rule the world too!
Very nice attempt. Big thumbs up.

one of my favorite Superman transformation moments is in III when he runs behind a fence to save Ricky.

Does anyone know if Richard Donner shot this footage?

This is all Lester as this scene didn't exist in the original Superman II script partially shot by Donner.

Sorry I'm very sentimental for the original takeoff because Superman flies by the building that I had my first job in.
