I think it was a great interview! He seems genuinely very nice and you can tell that he just lives and breathes music. I think it's amazing how well he understands it, he doesn't need to have notes in front of him or compose on paper or anything, he just gets it. Very cool guy!
ehh, the interviewer isn't bad but he should check his facts regarding where Andrew went to school. Weslyan is very different from Illinoise Weslyan...
I think Mr. Bird can't help but sound a bit over our heads, as he really does work (musically) on a very different level than most people. His drive for musical perfection combined with his amazing talent makes him something very different from the rank and file of musicians. Not to detract from other musicians, though. He just seems to stand on his own musically.
He seems to be a bit out of sorts - personally he seems to be pretty shy and reserved.
Jeremy Ylvisaker actually has a really great sense of humor and is a brilliant musician. Maybe you caught him on a bad night? You should check out the Fitz and Dizzyspells video - he's wearing a knitted unicorn sweater. He's quite a card.
Jeremy rocks! You should see him as "Evelyn Llewellyn" interviewing Andrew. It's basically a mock interview with Jeremy acting like a complete nutball, asking him to "compare the spiders ability to make a web with the snakes ability to not make a web", etc. Just Google "Touché with Andrew Bird". It's not on YouTube, but Pitchfork media has it... It's some really funny stuff!
I would normally agree with you, but Andrew Bird doesn't strike me as pretentious. His music is so good... it seems like what pretentious music TRIES to do. He looks a little full of himself, but I give him a free pass because of the music.
And I have to agree with that other comment... he's being interviewed about himself and his music making methods.
Jian graduated from York University with a degree in political science and history. He has written opinion pieces in newspapers. Jian has worked in tv and radio. And he is also a musician (band: Moxy Fruvous). He does a lot of different things. :)
Ugh he's so freaking adorable lol.

Typical?!! This is one of the more well-versed and calculated interviewers I've ever seen. He's very atypical to me.

Andrew is just like me, aside from his first name. I play music through ear mostly. I can read, but I learn and play better by ear. I play drums btw.

When I was 7, Andrew Bird did a live show at my school. I had no clue who he was until a couple years ago, when I started actually listening to him.
