Shawn is the best "good" fast guitarist ever cos there's alot of fast guys that are just shite!! awesome phrasing and blues licks and monster shred chops..
I prefer Shawn's non-classical sound over Yngwie's. They both deserve respect for the loads of talent and technique. If anything, Shawn is more original because his concepts are not based on known classical patterns. You dont look at Shawn and think 'Paganini replica' he's his own man.
Thats cool too. But you cant deny that Yngwie popularized the classical sound and feel in electric guitar solos. He was the first giant of that approach. And for electric guitar he is a giant. But the 'classical' music he got that sound from existed for hundreds of years. Sweep-picking is a new thing, but fast arpeggios are not. Thats what I was saying. Yngwie is a giant, but he's part of a classical style. Shawn does not sound classical. Its not the blues either .and its not jazz.
@mymotorcycle5 I agree with you;shawn's playing is a sort of "futurible"playing;yngwie's playing is a new type of playing surely more "traditional"based.
Such Friggin tone. I love when he slows down and sounds like some angry JIMI spirit. He has the drive of paganini's speed, Straight southern blues twang, my Fav, insane fret patterns, perfect up/down picking every note. You really have to love what you do to get that good. Skill is inevitable with something your obsessed with. Damn he was the man
@shinybald36 I don't think so bro. His arm probably shakes a bit but that's because there's so much motion in such a tiny space going on up to probably his wrist at the farthest point from the pick. Those miniscule picking motions are crazy fast and powerful.
I was lucky to have seen Shawn play in BOA very early on in Kansas City, 1979. Then again in 1979 or 80 in Detroit at the Center Stage show. He was just amazing back then and it was so early on. RIP Shawn your missed!

Almost 20 years ago and nobody comes close. Shawn arguably has the greatest left hand stamina and the right hand ever. The best hands down.
For some reason when he shreds, I just think what the fuck is this shit (in a good way). For all other people, even guys like Rusty Cooley and Paul Gilbert, I can always kinda comprehend the technique and the notes being played. This I just have no idea.

Indescribable, ethereal, powerful, and INSANELY good. How is it possible for a guitarist to make you feel something you've never felt before? That's the power of Shawn. Pure spirit.
@Scratch47 I totally agree with feeling something never felt before. Lane is the first guitarist who made me actually cry. And i was at work at that time, watching him on youtube in my break. Words can't describe it.
seconds after the end of the video, the frets and strings melted off.
shawn prolly didn't have finger prints. and that was either because she shredded them off, or Gods don't have identifying patterns on the fingertips but on the fretboard =D
he coulda danced rings round hendrix, if hendrix didnt get there 1st!!! shawn lane is among the untouchables! a sentient being completely in touch with his muse singing unsung songs.
Not one person has ever been perfect at any art, simply because it has to be learned and attempted.
Try pick up a fresh guitar, different fret lengths, neck radius, maybe it has shitty strings all these things can diminish the ease at which you can play. Shawn played 99.9% perfectly and hearing people go "well he is human" makes me laugh. He is a supersonic alien.
wait-so DID shawn like the way it sounded? i'm confused, was lane playing this to show what he DID not like? 'don't u like the way it sounds?' "I think it sounds horrible." at 57 seconds.
i was trying to figure out why he was shredding so hard and it just hit me he was testing the strat to make sure it wouldn't explode i think we all know it failed in the end only his vigier could handle that kind of abuse lol
I remember some people criticizing Shawn on his instructional video, complaining "he's hiding behind tons of delay and a modern/shred guitar" . Well, this video is dedicated ti them, there you have : a vintage guitar , single coils, straight into the amp ? So what now ??
But seriously now, every time i watch this video, i can't help thinking about hendrix who would have eaten Coltrane (or vice versa). Just Amazing !!
I love how in this video you can see shawn was a normal player and made mistakes just like everyone else, he's still a god like player but you can see even the great shawn lane made mistakes and it motivates you to try and be a great player as well, this is such a great video and it really inspires you to wanna play.
@woodstickfigures Exactly man, a lot of times we forget they are normal people, cause we listen to those perfected records over and over again. Essential what we hear on those records becomes what we perceive them to be.
@Powerslider "Music from the heart" sounds like an antiquated way of saying slow, diatonic soloing with lots of vibrato. Plus it's not like there's a backing track to anchor the chord changes.
Dude's a fusion guitarist. What do you expect?
The idea that great music has a foremost dedication to "emotion" is really regressive and silly. I see it so often here and it's so reductive and dumb...
As you say, you know he is simply fooling around, giving the old Strat a test drive. Is it really "too bad" that isn't "true music" though? It does give us a little insight into what he was like when he practised.
He actually made quite a lot of "real" music, which Willjay and others have very kindly uploaded examples of - my personal favourite is his song The Way It Has To Be:
Everytime i watch this my wrist starts to burn and feeli like i have tendonitis. Then my face slowly starts melting and i have to stop watching. Superb pentatonic shredding.
i love this video because it's so raw. it shows shawn messing up a bunch of times. so many times our heroes never make mistakes, and all we see is them when they are warmed up, on their favorite guitar, after tons of practicing. this shows us that shawn was a human, and that is very endearing. makes you realize that he wasn't just born with a guitar in his hands, but practiced very hard to get to where he did.
An odd but apt comparison: the sizeof his body was as the size of his soul, his talents, and his sound. RIP, Shawn, one of the greatest guitarists and musicians of all time.
Hands down one of the greatest players to live. His rhythmic groupings just blow my mind. I think it might be the thing that impresses me the most about him. The man could take any amount of notes and fit it into any feel and make it sound so smooth.
he is sorely missed. one with such connectivity of brain body and spirit is rare.this video is a treasure. someone mustve wanted him to sound like Hendrix, and he did, in his own way. a small part of me wihes he did try for that tonality, but its ok RIP Shawn Lane
yes. i have checked out his les paul videos previously and my god to shred on tht when the neck is as fat as it gets when his charvels neck is very thin its crazy he shred's that lespaul like it he plays one every day. he really is amazing!!!
definatelly my favourite of time.
apparently his vigier excaliber guitar is the easiest guitar to play marshall harrison-"it's so easy it's like cheating".
he's made a huge impression on me as well and has heavily influenced my own playing and how i approach musical composition. he's just got such a wide variety of musical ability and its just something that everyone who is a musician should be exposed to. And I agreed with the person who said Shawn Lane shouldn't have been in clubs but playing instead at Carnegie Hall.
yes i agree totaly, i think that not enough people or musicians know who he is and if they did they would understand why playing in 4:4 all day in the same key doesn't even scratch the surfce of what is possible.
Shawn Lane opened my eyes to wide intervallic licks, melodic faster playing and more.
and of course he got me into Jazz lll picks.
i have never came across another guitarists or musician in fact that i adore more than Shawn Lane. I owe alot to Shawn.
Wont wonder if the gituar would glow in the dark after he finished :-)

i love this video because it's so raw. it shows shawn messing up a bunch of times. so many times our heroes never make mistakes, and all we see is them when they are warmed up, on their favorite guitar, after tons of practicing. this shows us that shawn was a human, and that is very endearing. makes you realize that he wasn't just born with a guitar in his hands, but practiced very hard to get to where he did.

Fact - On most modern metronomes you'll find the two fastest settings are Prestissimo and Lanetissimo.
only a hand full can practice in Lanetissimo but none can practice in that speed with out undergoing cybernetic enhancements.

The best there is and ever will be.

An odd but apt comparison: the sizeof his body was as the size of his soul, his talents, and his sound. RIP, Shawn, one of the greatest guitarists and musicians of all time.

It doesn't even make sense, ive seen people make it look easy but this is effortless. It is amazing how easily he moves around the neck.

Sounds a bit like Hendrix but sped up to triple or quadruple lol.
He gets some TONE out of that thing, doesn't he? Damn.
Zebula77 2 years ago 2
My head just exploded...I wonder how that guitar can handle all these notes per second :P
Korbu3 2 years ago
I was seriously tempted to call 9-1-1 while watching this video. What's going on here is nothing short of RAPE! That poor guitar.

Test drive? More like trying to destroy that strat with shred =p
TheWhocares233 2 years ago 4
Hands down one of the greatest players to live. His rhythmic groupings just blow my mind. I think it might be the thing that impresses me the most about him. The man could take any amount of notes and fit it into any feel and make it sound so smooth.
bobfnjob 2 years ago 7
he is definately not testing that poor little thing..lol..
what an abuse i must say...
molywaki 2 years ago
wow that guitar just recieved a royal ass kicking !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the guitar will probably never go that fast again lol
lonewolfshogun 2 years ago 6
lmao, dude its so intense, i cant stop coming back to see this. these licks are insane
TruNikkaz 2 years ago
God damn, that lick at 0:05 - 0:12 is awesome. Very Hendrix.
WalkinDude91 2 years ago
You're right , i was just thinking the same, but on the other hand :
1) Shawn always mentionned Hendrix as his prime influence
2) If you pick a white strat, mapple neck, what would come in your mind to play first ? ;-)
genolafrite 2 years ago
BLUES
Andoni666 2 years ago
smoothest picking hand ever
lightening fast, but no machinegun effect
PERFECT for his style
TruNikkaz 2 years ago 5
he is sorely missed. one with such connectivity of brain body and spirit is rare.this video is a treasure. someone mustve wanted him to sound like Hendrix, and he did, in his own way. a small part of me wihes he did try for that tonality, but its ok RIP Shawn Lane
kv600 2 years ago
Shawn Lane has 2 speeds: Fast, and Slow.
When he's playing slow its about 1238912 Notes per second. Don't get me started on fast.
haha thats not meant as a cut in any way shape or form he's got more melody than anyone i know.
Scarified2012 2 years ago
it is pretty impressive to pick up a guitar that you don't normally play and to be able to pull off all the licks.
especialy on a strat the neck is very different than his charvel he was using at the time.
trevskiw2008 2 years ago 4
you should see the all along the watch tower video of him playing a les paul
Scarified2012 2 years ago
yes. i have checked out his les paul videos previously and my god to shred on tht when the neck is as fat as it gets when his charvels neck is very thin its crazy he shred's that lespaul like it he plays one every day. he really is amazing!!!
definatelly my favourite of time.
apparently his vigier excaliber guitar is the easiest guitar to play marshall harrison-"it's so easy it's like cheating".
can't get enough of Shawn Lane.
he really made a big impression on me.
thanks for commenting.
trevskiw2008 2 years ago
he's made a huge impression on me as well and has heavily influenced my own playing and how i approach musical composition. he's just got such a wide variety of musical ability and its just something that everyone who is a musician should be exposed to. And I agreed with the person who said Shawn Lane shouldn't have been in clubs but playing instead at Carnegie Hall.
Scarified2012 2 years ago
yes i agree totaly, i think that not enough people or musicians know who he is and if they did they would understand why playing in 4:4 all day in the same key doesn't even scratch the surfce of what is possible.
Shawn Lane opened my eyes to wide intervallic licks, melodic faster playing and more.
and of course he got me into Jazz lll picks.
i have never came across another guitarists or musician in fact that i adore more than Shawn Lane. I owe alot to Shawn.
trevskiw2008 2 years ago
omg the tone he gets out of that thing is CRAZY!
sux0rz 2 years ago
LOL i know the tone is insane. He makes everything sound good doesn't matter what guitar he plays.
Scarified2012 2 years ago
The lick from 0:29 - 0:37 gives me the shivers every single time I watch this video.
