  • Wont wonder if the gituar would glow in the dark after he finished :-)

  • this was on Friday the 13th in Dec 1991!!!

  • Wonderful insight into his technique, far better for me than his instructionals...

  • COOL SHIT

  • it works

  • lawl

90's mac, 90's strat.... what could be better?!

  • OHH!! i didnt know it was the same day as sneaky pete's!! wow!

  • The early 90 strats are the best, I had a 92 Strat that was badass! that guitar was the baddest strat I have ever played i sold it in 2005 like an idiot!

  • this is crazy!!!

  • though there are various possibilities of playing an electric guitar i think this is the real way and the best sound how it has to be . But who can copy that ???

  • No porn on that computer...maybe Oregon Trail though.

  • He plays way to slow for my tastes.

  • GODDAMN I love what this man did with the instrument!!! Rest his soul, I love how he can make those guitarists full of hubris who think they're super fast (AKA 'fastest in the world') cringe...I'm sure Marcus Paus and all them would just quit the instrument after really taking this guy in for a few minutes - especially considering he tends to hang onto his musical integrity even while she warp speeds his neck - not to mention how much soul he had when he didn't play uber fast :)

  • 91-92 strats rule!!!! I have 3

  • At 4:50 that is one cool soundin' lick.

  • yet again, shawn lane owns yngwie. and this time its on yngwie's guitar!

  • AMAZING! WHAT kind of strat was that? year and name like (standard, relic, vintage)

  • i love how you called test driving, was it a pun regarding to his fast playing?

  • wow!!

  • I wish there was a 'Shawn lane lick dictionnary.'

  • Shawn is the best "good" fast guitarist ever cos there's alot of fast guys that are just shite!! awesome phrasing and blues licks and monster shred chops..

  • I prefer Shawn's non-classical sound over Yngwie's. They both deserve respect for the loads of talent and technique. If anything, Shawn is more original because his concepts are not based on known classical patterns. You dont look at Shawn and think 'Paganini replica' he's his own man.

  • @mymotorcycle5 i look at yngwie and i think"wow what ana amazing yngwie malmsteen"!!i think is really unique and not the paganini's replica.

  • @bumbo612

Thats cool too. But you cant deny that Yngwie popularized the classical sound and feel in electric guitar solos. He was the first giant of that approach. And for electric guitar he is a giant. But the 'classical' music he got that sound from existed for hundreds of years. Sweep-picking is a new thing, but fast arpeggios are not. Thats what I was saying. Yngwie is a giant, but he's part of a classical style. Shawn does not sound classical. Its not the blues either .and its not jazz.

  • @mymotorcycle5 I agree with you;shawn's playing is a sort of "futurible"playing;yngwie's playing is a new type of playing surely more "traditional"based.

  • THE GUITAR GENIUS SPEED FAST WORLD GUINESS 20 YEARS

  • Such Friggin tone. I love when he slows down and sounds like some angry JIMI spirit. He has the drive of paganini's speed, Straight southern blues twang, my Fav, insane fret patterns, perfect up/down picking every note. You really have to love what you do to get that good. Skill is inevitable with something your obsessed with. Damn he was the man

  • does he pick from the elbow?

  • @shinybald36 I don't think so bro. His arm probably shakes a bit but that's because there's so much motion in such a tiny space going on up to probably his wrist at the farthest point from the pick. Those miniscule picking motions are crazy fast and powerful.

  • @shinybald36 nope! All in the wrist.

  • I think Shaun was the only person to take advantage of the nine-month loading screen by putting in the "Super speed" cheat.

    Crafty bugger. xD

Shame he's not with us anymore. D:

  • RIP

  • Great! Musical and soulful, fast and impressive. As always.

  • Betcha cant play this yngwie ;)

  • killa lane

  • I was lucky to have seen Shawn play in BOA very early on in Kansas City, 1979. Then again in 1979 or 80 in Detroit at the Center Stage show. He was just amazing back then and it was so early on. RIP Shawn your missed!

  • I was lucky to have seen Shawn play in BOA very early on in Kansas City, 1979. Then again in 1979 or 80 in Detroit at the Center Stage show. He was just amazing back then and it was so early on. RIP Shawn your missed!

  • The Devil sold his soul to Shawn so he could play like him!

  • I wouldn't touch a guitar if Shawn was in the same building as me.

  • Damn that guitar sounds awsome, I wish he had used it more.

  • 19 years ago today!

  • the best ever! Wish I could have witnessed the madness at least once. Maybe in another life. I'll recognize him and I'll call him Shawn.

  • @AtmaRising Nice comment. Quite an emotional thing to read for some reason. :(

  • Think half time, play double time! I got raggae.Weird cinqopation pick middelfinger cojunction, seems very very personal and difficult to break out from.Watch him move towards the bridge, as he starts to pick striktly alternate! One of the most interesting posts i have seen.Thank you very much!

  • Think half time, play double time! I got raggae.

  • ahh to be shawn lane....to practice a lick slow once, and then master it.

  • HOLY AWESOMENESS!!

  • This feels like I'm watching John Petrucci's psycho exercises....only that my head imploded....oh and this is real....

  • the only time he sounds good in this video is when he plays slowly

  • This has got to be the only video I've ever seen Shawn make a mistake in.

  • i would not have minded to have given him one of my guitars and had him play!

  • so much spam on the voy site

    shame on them :(

  • @BoxenstienMusic That's a shame, there never used to be. :( There are quite a few interesting posts there to check through from way back.

  • Great video of Shawn !!!!

  • "it doesn't sound like it looks" lmao

  • Seriously goes 6 gears on it

  • I was 4 days old when this was taken.

  • even if i was only doing air guitar, i don't think i can still move my fingers as fast as shawn could....

  • @lovekurt LOL!.. that made me giggle!! :D ... Really hope you're well matey!!! :-p

  • fuck yeah

  • i just broke an air guitar string[-]=

  • the only players i can think of that i've ever seen play that quickly and cleanly are tony impellitrelli and, well, malmsteen. but the truth is, shawn lane was better than both of them, and not by a narrow margin either. he was versed in so many styles, and played them all spectacularly.

  • is that hybrid picking?

  • @emmanuelrodulfo Economy picking and alternate picking I believe. I'm pretty sure it's economy picking but I'm sure he is able to do both.

  • @Botdra no actually. if you define fingerpicking with normal picking as economy picking. i dunno what it is called really but sum1 said its hybrid picking. he plucks the other strings if you look closely.

  • @emmanuelrodulfo I'm really not sure, you could be right. But his hand is very spazzy when he plays sometimes, so I assume that's what the motion is, since I've never seen him hybrid pick. But who knows!

  • @Botdra Ive seen him hybrid pick many many times

  • @Botdra

Search for "Shawn Lane demonstrates hybrid picking" :D. But yeah this clip is mainly legato, alternate and hybrid picking. Shawn would often incorporate his middle finger in certain patterns. He didn't really economy pick in the normal sense - it's just sometimes there would be "speed picking" patterns where he'd do a down-down stroke for example, but nothing like Gambale economy. Search for "Shawn Lane Power Licks", his first instructional video, that should clarify a lot of things.

  • Even Yngwie's guitar is not good for Shawn Lane haha ;)

  • Almost 20 years ago and nobody comes close. I have heard everybody rip sextuplets, repeating diatonic 5's and 7's (Petrucci, Vai, Cooley), and chromatics but these ideas are full of mixed groupings with complex legato phrasing. Shawn arguably has the greatest left hand stamina and the right hand ever. The best hands down.

  • 5:20-5:36....I mean honestly I don't think you could stuff any more talent into the man. Even the camera guy had a " what in the fuck" chuckle.

  • For some reason when he shreds, I just think what the fuck is this shit (in a good way). For all other people, even guys like Rusty Cooley and Paul Gilbert, I can always kinda comprehend the technique and the notes being played. This I just have no idea.

  • you never learn to play like that. you learn to play like yourself.

practice, discipline. passion. ya gotta walk before ya run. good luck.

the difference is shawn could also play slow melodic solos. this is way too much

but it's great at the same time.

  • you do not ,you can not, unless you have magical powers, this guy was maybe a once in a generation phenom, but you'll notice even shawn makes mistakes. miss ya man love ya. hope you hear me

  • how do i learn to play like that?

  • @zhn0k ...Sell your soul at the crossroads, lol. ;)

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos if only I knew where the crossroads are, I would do it in a heartbeat :D:D:D

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos I remember in the movie crossroads with ralph macchio at the end the guy says..."I got a big white fellow from memphis...cuts heads every saturday night, he discourages up and coming boys" then he says its jack butler but we know damn well its not jack butler its SHAWN LANE lol

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Its Too Late To Learn that you gotta start Pre-birth xD

  • @DiminishedTB i bet shawn was strumming the the umbilical cord before his mother gave birth to him.

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Won't help ! So many crazy mutations of notes .That type of riffing was NOT taken from Robert Johnson !!!

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos "I said hello satan, i believe its time to go."

  • @zhn0k read alot of good music books then practise 15 hours a day

  • Indescribable, ethereal, powerful, and INSANELY good. How is it possible for a guitarist to make you feel something you've never felt before? That's the power of Shawn. Pure spirit.

  • @Scratch47 I totally agree with feeling something never felt before. Lane is the first guitarist who made me actually cry. And i was at work at that time, watching him on youtube in my break. Words can't describe it.

  • argh, those postion changes are so insane!

  • Nice guitar, but it really doesn't work for him.

  • @FantasticSkyChariot ....Seemed to work pretty fine to me! ;)

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Well of course a Strat is going to sound nice, but it's nothing compared to his Ibanez.

  • The ability play THAT fast with THAT amount of articulation is unreal.

    Incredible!

  • Playing a strat is a whole different kettle of fish then A"Shred" type of guitar. So to be able to shred like that is pretty impressive.

  • To think that Shawn Lane was shredding sound into another universe on a white strat the night before I was born! What an honor!

  • dont fuck with me dude hahahahaha that was in 91`, it`s 2010 today and still looks like HYPER-PRO!!!!! cool pc at the bottom by the way...

  • holy shit that just blew my mind!!!

  • he just opened a dorway to another dimension.. can you see it?? yes, its right there.. he is pressing the codes.. WTF!=!!¿!¿!!?!¿!!=!!!(

  • seconds after the end of the video, the frets and strings melted off.

shawn prolly didn't have finger prints. and that was either because she shredded them off, or Gods don't have identifying patterns on the fingertips but on the fretboard =D

  • Right about at 5;25 it gets into the realm of un-worldley for lack of a better adj !!

Thanks fer stickin around long enough to let me see you live a dozen or so times!

    RIP Memphis Monster!

  • You can clearly hear Buckethead was influanced By Shawn, very nice to hear this :)

  • he coulda danced rings round hendrix, if hendrix didnt get there 1st!!! shawn lane is among the untouchables! a sentient being completely in touch with his muse singing unsung songs.

  • some times is looks like he has 5(6) fingers (thumb is no finger^^) ! O.O

  • you smell that smoke? i think is fingers are burning

  • Not one person has ever been perfect at any art, simply because it has to be learned and attempted.

Try pick up a fresh guitar, different fret lengths, neck radius, maybe it has shitty strings all these things can diminish the ease at which you can play. Shawn played 99.9% perfectly and hearing people go "well he is human" makes me laugh. He is a supersonic alien.

  • wait-so DID shawn like the way it sounded? i'm confused, was lane playing this to show what he DID not like? 'don't u like the way it sounds?' "I think it sounds horrible." at 57 seconds.

  • i was trying to figure out why he was shredding so hard and it just hit me he was testing the strat to make sure it wouldn't explode i think we all know it failed in the end only his vigier could handle that kind of abuse lol

  • I remember some people criticizing Shawn on his instructional video, complaining "he's hiding behind tons of delay and a modern/shred guitar" . Well, this video is dedicated ti them, there you have : a vintage guitar , single coils, straight into the amp ? So what now ??

But seriously now, every time i watch this video, i can't help thinking about hendrix who would have eaten Coltrane (or vice versa). Just Amazing !!

  • I didn't know a guitar could do this, I'll go pick up my jaw now. I forgot to breath while watching. Stratocaster= OWNED

  • I love how in this video you can see shawn was a normal player and made mistakes just like everyone else, he's still a god like player but you can see even the great shawn lane made mistakes and it motivates you to try and be a great player as well, this is such a great video and it really inspires you to wanna play.

  • @woodstickfigures Exactly man, a lot of times we forget they are normal people, cause we listen to those perfected records over and over again. Essential what we hear on those records becomes what we perceive them to be.

  • 5:03

    start learnin kiddies

  • The licks Shawn sequences at 5:04 to 5:15...is exactly the kind of lick I dream about for weeks on end.

  • yngwie who??ahaha

  • @tmh1717 yngwie terd steam

  • I have just realised that strat is de tuned to E flat.

A lot of people say the strat comes alive tuned in E flat.

It sure comes alive when Shawn is playing it!!

  • @TrevorWilsonHimself Hendrix played in Eb

  • @EstevanMusic Excellent!

  • my pc is now broken

  • LOL!

  • 0:28, no one moves around like that anymore! Genius.

  • Hes having a problem with the radius of the neck

  • ...besides his amazing fusion super fast shred licks he plays, his Hendrix-style licks really kick ass!!unbelievable

  • Comment removed

  • @Powerslider "Music from the heart" sounds like an antiquated way of saying slow, diatonic soloing with lots of vibrato. Plus it's not like there's a backing track to anchor the chord changes.

Dude's a fusion guitarist. What do you expect?

The idea that great music has a foremost dedication to "emotion" is really regressive and silly. I see it so often here and it's so reductive and dumb...

  • Comment removed

  • As you say, you know he is simply fooling around, giving the old Strat a test drive. Is it really "too bad" that isn't "true music" though? It does give us a little insight into what he was like when he practised.

He actually made quite a lot of "real" music, which Willjay and others have very kindly uploaded examples of - my personal favourite is his song The Way It Has To Be:

    /watch?v=kMoGQyh_tyw

    Cheers.

  • Everytime i watch this my wrist starts to burn and feeli like i have tendonitis. Then my face slowly starts melting and i have to stop watching. Superb pentatonic shredding.

  • i love this video because it's so raw. it shows shawn messing up a bunch of times. so many times our heroes never make mistakes, and all we see is them when they are warmed up, on their favorite guitar, after tons of practicing. this shows us that shawn was a human, and that is very endearing. makes you realize that he wasn't just born with a guitar in his hands, but practiced very hard to get to where he did.

  • Fact - On most modern metronomes you'll find the two fastest settings are Prestissimo and Lanetissimo.

only a hand full can practice in Lanetissimo but none can practice in that speed with out undergoing cybernetic enhancements.

  • LOL!

  • @Phrygian12

    Lanetissimo hahahahahahahahaha!

  • @Phrygian12 that was the funniest most truthful things ive ever heard

  • @Phrygian12 hahahaha. awesome comment!

  • @Phrygian12 Or being Shawn Lane

  • The best there is and ever will be.

  • An odd but apt comparison: the sizeof his body was as the size of his soul, his talents, and his sound. RIP, Shawn, one of the greatest guitarists and musicians of all time.

  • It doesn't even make sense, ive seen people make it look easy but this is effortless. It is amazing how easily he moves around the neck.

  • Eat your heart out Zakk... ; )

  • this guy is too good

  • ssssssssssshiit

  • Its mixolydian at 5.38

5th mode of the major scale.

  • 5:38, love that scale, very shawn laneish...what the hell is it? lol

  • sounds kinda lydian. definitely not sure. its awesome though.

  • unbelievable. He proves he isnt one of those mad fretters that just play crap, because at 5:00 he shows what hes doing both slow, normal, and fast

    prestiege!

  • Godmode !!

  • LoL!

  • Sounds like he may be using a fuzz face too.

  • Sounds a bit like Hendrix but sped up to triple or quadruple lol.

He gets some TONE out of that thing, doesn't he? Damn.

  • My head just exploded...I wonder how that guitar can handle all these notes per second :P

  • I was seriously tempted to call 9-1-1 while watching this video. What's going on here is nothing short of RAPE! That poor guitar.

  • @spacerumsfeld LMAO!!!

  • Test drive? More like trying to destroy that strat with shred =p

  • Hands down one of the greatest players to live. His rhythmic groupings just blow my mind. I think it might be the thing that impresses me the most about him. The man could take any amount of notes and fit it into any feel and make it sound so smooth.

  • he is definately not testing that poor little thing..lol..

what an abuse i must say...

  • wow that guitar just recieved a royal ass kicking !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the guitar will probably never go that fast again lol

  • lmao, dude its so intense, i cant stop coming back to see this. these licks are insane

  • God damn, that lick at 0:05 - 0:12 is awesome. Very Hendrix.

  • You're right , i was just thinking the same, but on the other hand :

    1) Shawn always mentionned Hendrix as his prime influence

    2) If you pick a white strat, mapple neck, what would come in your mind to play first ? ;-)

  • BLUES

  • smoothest picking hand ever

lightening fast, but no machinegun effect

    PERFECT for his style

  • he is sorely missed. one with such connectivity of brain body and spirit is rare.this video is a treasure. someone mustve wanted him to sound like Hendrix, and he did, in his own way. a small part of me wihes he did try for that tonality, but its ok RIP Shawn Lane

  • Shawn Lane has 2 speeds: Fast, and Slow.

When he's playing slow its about 1238912 Notes per second. Don't get me started on fast.

haha thats not meant as a cut in any way shape or form he's got more melody than anyone i know.

  • it is pretty impressive to pick up a guitar that you don't normally play and to be able to pull off all the licks.

especialy on a strat the neck is very different than his charvel he was using at the time.

  • you should see the all along the watch tower video of him playing a les paul

  • yes. i have checked out his les paul videos previously and my god to shred on tht when the neck is as fat as it gets when his charvels neck is very thin its crazy he shred's that lespaul like it he plays one every day. he really is amazing!!!

    definatelly my favourite of time.

apparently his vigier excaliber guitar is the easiest guitar to play marshall harrison-"it's so easy it's like cheating".

can't get enough of Shawn Lane.

he really made a big impression on me.

    thanks for commenting.

  • he's made a huge impression on me as well and has heavily influenced my own playing and how i approach musical composition. he's just got such a wide variety of musical ability and its just something that everyone who is a musician should be exposed to. And I agreed with the person who said Shawn Lane shouldn't have been in clubs but playing instead at Carnegie Hall.

  • yes i agree totaly, i think that not enough people or musicians know who he is and if they did they would understand why playing in 4:4 all day in the same key doesn't even scratch the surfce of what is possible.

Shawn Lane opened my eyes to wide intervallic licks, melodic faster playing and more.

and of course he got me into Jazz lll picks.

i have never came across another guitarists or musician in fact that i adore more than Shawn Lane. I owe alot to Shawn.

  • omg the tone he gets out of that thing is CRAZY!

  • LOL i know the tone is insane. He makes everything sound good doesn't matter what guitar he plays.

  • The lick from 0:29 - 0:37 gives me the shivers every single time I watch this video.

  • Amazing!!!!!

  • YouTube would have made him really famous.
