@kieselsteinchen Dr. von Braun certainly did a lot in the rocketry field; particularly after the German V-2 research program was moved to the United States after WWII but he was not even head of that program. For a better history of this matter read "The Wind and Beyond" by Theodore Karman; he was head of the rocketry program at Cal Tech in the 1930s and 40s.
Interesting. Seems that we always have to be careful with "the" truth in history. I saw a German history series that asserted that W. v. Braun was the great inventor until the succesfully Moon landing. In aspects of moral it is may difficult to tell the truth about that: Handling the "Nürnberger Prozesse" on one hand and avail oneself of more than 150 scientists from "good old" Nazi Germany regardless of who they were and what they did! I's just wondering why Mr. Sagan didn't mention anything.
While the local US newspapers were mocking Robert Goddard as a wacky and failed inventor, Von Braun was reading and following Goddard's work very carefully.
Wernher von Braun considered Robert Goddard a great experimental scientist and understood him for the pioneer he was.
They both shared a dream as well, of traveling to other worlds. They were more alike than you might imagine.

Used to watch this show as a kid. It's amazing how well Cosmos has aged, I still enjoy watching it now even in 2010.
