Hiromi is proof that you can have all the chops in the world, thoroughly digest all the "material" and language of this music, and still not be happening. This video is great for one reason, though. Where else can you see so many people get their asses kicked by Hank Jones, Chick, and Patitucci on one stage?
@Rigerdaby The Japanese woman had great technical chops but musically it was average. I'm also not sure why you'd have Chick Corea as a guest for such a bluesy straight forward tune.
Artists cover other songs to make it their own, its not necessarily supposed to sound like the original. But the drummer is good yeah, maybe a bit too many fills for jazz but he keeps a good beat.
I cant talk about other stuff they may have done together, but I wouldnt be too critical on this particular performance, because its more like they are just having fun and loosening up.
Her music definitely gets wild, but no more so than some classical performances. She cuts loose like some of Rachmaninioff's (sp?) compositions or Prokofiev's do.
But it sounded kind of bad when chic was playing lines, she was playing all over him. When she played lines, chic let her be heard and backed off some... she should have been more sensitive to that. KJShack I agree 100%.

Love the drummer. Don't think the pianists got it. Too many notes, too far from the original

Yep, this must be captured in Japan where appearantly the jazz audience likes to clap (very disciplined) instead of just (sit and) listen ...

hiromi needs to learn a lesson from chick- you don't have to be playing the whole time. jazz is a combination of sound and SILENCE.

I don't agree with that. I like the way how she's playing
sax503 4 years ago
she over does it sometimes though. you'll see when you get into her more

She does pause, Chick fills in some of the blanks.
