Pancrase provided a more consistent pay check than the fledgling MMA/Vale Tudo scene in the US and Brazil, so that might've had something to do with it.

@lap116 This is called Pancrase which was a tournament in Japan and, like the UFC, it is about pure combat, not about exclusively using one particular "style" of fighting. These are older matches from the 1990's when Bas Rutten was younger. It's really too bad he can't compete in todays MMA matches but he's gotten too old. He was very versitile and quick and was a very smart fighter as well - plus he's really entertaining to listen too. To bad we don't hear more from him these days.

@akitaman101 Bas himself shows you in one of his self defence videos, that when someone throws a kick at you, you should 'ride it', meaning move in the direction that its going. It'll lose it's strength the further it goes and at the height of its arc you grab it, and from there you can trip your opponent or punch or elbow and have complete control. He shows you how to counter that move too which is what you've seen. lol Hes not to be messed with. Look up 'Bas Rutten Street Fighting'.
