He used to be a member of Ostriensburg's army, but when Siegfried had joined a mercenary group, who happened to be at odds with Ostriensburg, Siegfried accidentally killed him. Sieg hadn't known immediately though. He just received word he died and wanted to revive him. Hence him becoming Nightmare until 3.

In Nightmare's SC2 profile, we learned Sieg remembered he killed his own father, and came to regret his crimes as Nightmare, and tried to place himself away from society to protect the people from himself, but Soul Edge controlled him in his sleep, and eventually completely, until his duel with Raphael at the end of SC2/beginning of SC3

let me explain it to you like it is.

nightmare was born from siegfried himself. when taking up soul edge for the first time to resurrect his father. he became the azure knight: Nightmare. and slayed thousands of people. then at the end of sc2. nightmare met raphael, who weakened nightmare, eventually Siegfried retook control. he cast of his azure armor and trust soul calibur into soul edge. nightmare took refuge in an old armor. and was given an unstable body by zasalamel.

Just a slight correction, he sought Soul Edge to take revenge for his father's death ( Having gone insane and convincing himself that it was someone else and not him. ) Otherwise you're right on the money. ( Although I don't know SC2's story that well. )

your correct though, i believe from soul edge to soul calibur 1 he believes that somebody else kileld his father, so i suppose by the end of soul calibur 1 he realised it was himself, because by the start of soul calibur 2 he is fully aware that he killed his father

I think in his non-canon Soul Calibur 1 ending he realized it, so that probably plays into the plot of Soul Calibur 2. I can't remember if it said he broke free from Nightmare's control for a while or not, but if so that's probably when he accepted the fact.

I like the evolution of Siegfried's character through out the series. For a while I thought they'd never make a sequel to Soul Blade so it was awesome when he reappeared as Nightmare.

well, soul calibur 2 was better in many views to me. soul calibur 3 looked alot more cartoony then soul calibur 2, wich i did not like.

voice acting went down the crapper. both nightmare and astaroth took a huge dive in voice acting( nightmare sounded like a castrate and astaroth sounded like an 80's bond villain.)

I agree with you on the voice acting bit, but I loved the look of SC3, including the lack of Voldo's ass.

But Nightmare's voice sounded like an old anime dub. Just bad. I don't remember Astaroth's voice. Truth be told I played the game in Japanese most of the time.

i never played street fighter outside of a game boy. the game boy being that gigantic box in wich u had to put 4 fucking AA battery's.

my fighting games were 2d mortal kombat. tekken 2-3. once played soul blade wich my nephew had. and thats about it. once i get a ps3 i will buy tekken 6 BR and if i have the luck i will buy sc4 after i baught all internet related options for ps3 ( adaptor, mini keyboard, and a charging station)

Agreed. Except I feel that people nowadays actively dislike story. Theyd prefer there NOT be any story to having a good one. (in general anyway) These same people also like "revolutionary" features like the new Prince of Persia where its IMPOSSIBLE to die/lose. Yeah now thats gaming awesomeness.

There are only very few games which people replay just because of the story (they didn't get it first) everyone else replays them for the gameplay. Sigfried in Soulblade was a 16 years old boy who lived as a thief while his father was on the crussades. In one of his ambushes to the returning caravans he killed his father. He was so terrified with the image that he went insane and believed that someone else killed his father, so he begun his search for the soul edge to find the murderer and avenge the death of his father. After Sophitia destroyed the spirit of Inferno, Siegfried arrived the arena, took the soul edge and became Nightmare

Well, actually Nightmare is just what people call Soul Edge's puppet. Siegfried used to be that puppet until Soul Edge was weakened enough for him to break its hold over him. The Nightmare that exists now is just a temporary shell that Soul Edge animated, which he did with Tira's help if I remember correctly.

actually if im correct i think that nightmare is the azure knight that used to be seigfried and now nightmare is only the spirit of soul edge except in the body of the azure knight i think that should answer things =D

At the end of Soul Calibur II Seigfried discarded the Azure Armour, Soul Edge put it's spirit in the armour so it could survive, Zasalamel made the armour able to move.

Siegfried has his own body, Nightmare has his empty shell.

siegfrieds father is not nightmare, nor ever was nightmare. and siegfried is not nightmare anymore. when his two concioussnesses were fighting while he was nightmare, siegfried managed to take control of his own body, rip off the armor, and therefore, he is no longer nightmare. oh and btw, NIGHTMARE murdered siegfrieds father, not siegfried. well kinda it was siegfried cuz he WAS nightmare when that happened.

Yes, it is. Sigfried, unbeknownst to himself, accidentally killed his own father in the raid of a village. He held up a head, showing it to his comrades, then was shocked to see it was his own father's. That's why he tried to use Soul Edge to gather souls to bring his father back. unfortunately, it didn't quite happen that way.

That's actually a common misconception due to the time period difference of two years. Soul Edge the game had the original siegfried and came out in 1995-1996, While cloud and final fantasy VII came out in 1997...so...in reality...CLOUD'S THE KNOCK OFF...a...more powerful knock off...but a KNOCK OFF NONETHELESS
