  • Such an innovative, incredible film. Agreed about Hero.

  • Your an Idiot,.... that's just how I see it of course

  • [3/3] The only one who tells the true story about those three is the lumberjack, but even him changes a little detail about it: he does not tell about him stoling the knife after everything had ended.

And yes, thought the film may seem a bit pessimistic, it is not: in the end there is redemption, the only cause he wanted to hide the story of the knife is that he has no money, but he has good heart and brings a little hope in the monk's thought: this is what the film is about.

  • @zissuntetnah Wow. Such a long comment deserves a log in. While I disagree with your thought that there is one true and discernible story in this movie, I appreciate you mentioning that there are Kurosawa interviews in which he explains his intentions in this film. Still, this account is "MovieIWatch" and not "MoviesIReseach". So, I'm not at all ashamed that I found the use of subjectivity in Rashomon to be a great storytelling device. Thanks for your input. It was very interesting.

  • 3 out of 5 is the best YOU can do.........

  • you dont know if anyone has heard of it? Well, it's not that "secret". Akira Kurosawa is one of the most known director for those who are interested in cinema. However, Rashomon is great. I'm 15. btw.

  • I just watched it a few days ago. I loved it. Great storytelling.

  • I know, right?

  • Who's the director who makes slow scenes good? Also, the fight scenes are not supposed to be that good. Well, some are bad on purpose, the others are not as important.

  • One director who makes slow scenes good is Sergio Leone.

  • The woman was't annoying. She was raped so it was natural for her to be crying. And she did express other emotions through out the movie.

What i liked about the movie was how each one of the characters told the story in his own way, and at the end we really don't find out which story is true. I like to believe that none of them was lying. They simply chose to talk about the good things while hiding the bad things from us.

    By the way.

Which story do you think is the true story? And why?

  • Your analogy is quite accurate. The 'Rashomon effect' occurs every day in courtrooms. Every person in the world has their own perspective; so much so that they fully believe their own lies.

Having said that, to answer your question: None of them. I think the most powerful aspect of this film is its mystery. We will never know the truth—we merely see glimpses of it.

Did you follow the story of the dagger? Listen closely when the dead man finishes his story, and watch the woodcutters reaction.

  • Hey, what did you think of the scene at the end of the movie with the baby, redemption or just falling deeper into the :humans suck no matter what: camp? cause i think redemption, but, no body agrees with me... :(

  • Mean dogs ARE scray.

I kind of forget what happens. The wood-cutter takes the baby, right? Either way, you had to look past what you were seeing during every part of the film, so I'd have to go with the redemption theory. It seems like the film was saying, "He's how stupid we all are. Now let's do something about it."

  • @MoviesIWatch (read the other comment before continuing) But there is no mystery at all, look for Kurosawa interviews, he clearly says that there is no intention to foolish the audience, the film is concieved to be understood at first sight.. he was unlucky because the film had success in Italy and everyone thought it was inspired to Pirandello's relativism.

No, it is not. This film is just about egoism, everyone changes details in the story to try to show he is a better person (continues)

  • @meandogsarescary I think MoviesIWatch would be better not to upload his videos anymore, because he is too far away from understanding films such as this.

The fact about this film is that most people misconceive what it is about: they think it's about something like "oh 4 different versions, all could be true we will never know because everything is relative or something like that". But there is no mystery at all, look for Kurosawa interviews, he clearly says that (continues...)
