Thanks for the tips, i held my pick exactly like you did before and i always noticed i was sloppy with it and had massive trouble when i tried to play speed parts! but now that im holding the pick like you said im ALOT less sloppy and its made the sound more smooth when i play! keep up the vids man
You are an awesome shredder! Thanks for the tips...I agree with you on the pick holding technique and I agree the anchoring can slow you down as well.. Nice shredding!
@benwilshire hey man, i hold the pick about halfway between the way you used to, and the method you use now. but i use mostly motion from my index and thumb instead of moving my wrist, problem is i max out around 145bpm and i have been for awhile. am i going to need to change to doing this or never get any better? its hard because the way im used to doing it is totally different.
i've been picking the way you used to pick for nearly 2 years, and i find it way too dificult to pick your way..im curious because maybe your picking would give me an improvement over mine but its too weird, how long did it take you to get used to the new way?
Thanks so much Ben, I gave up on picks a while ago cos my nail was faster, but I've started using them again and didn't get half the speed I did with my nail. I tried this technique and it felt really natural immediately so they must be simalar positioning. Halped so much! :)
What's weird is that I watched the Paul Gilbert vid where he talks about this technique before watching this one lol all in all, this is an awesome and very helpful vid
Thanks bro! Long time bass player exploring shred guitar as a serious second language =-)
I really had to fine tune my picking after your vid. Thanks, and you are an excellent bass player as well! Lessons from the mind of a guitar player on bass would be interesting if you are bored! lol.
I've been playing almost 40 years and I knew something was missing as far as my right hand technique but I wasn't sure what to do. I just tried your method and I think it is great. Thanks a bunch mate. Hope that one day soon you play in Middle Georgia, USA. I'll be in the front row.
Do you have any tips for when alternate picking across strings? When I go down onto the next string from an upstroke on the previous string (and vice versa) I just cant do it, I always catch the string I just finished with as a move over it...Really hard to explain! I hope you get it
What picks do you use? Cause I've been doing this technique for a while now but I can't get the tone I want out of the unwound strings. It's quiet and kinda "mushy"? I used to use 88mm Tortex's or Nylons but now I have to carve some of the tip off to make it sharper to get a articulate and clean sound. What do you suggest I do? I've tried picks like Jazz III's but I find them kind of sterile sounding.
I have a quaestion regarding (right hand) pivot points - (something you did'nt discuss).
Where and how exactly do you place your picking hand on the guitar ? - (Do you place the side of your hand on the bridge or the strings etc, or do you place large pad of your thumb on these, or is your hand entirely floating etc ?)
Spot on with the pick hold, I had exactly the same problem! I also agree on the chromatic exercises, but I will give the "unanchoring" a go! Thanks for the tips :)
@D0nRidah Actually I tried it now for about 20 mins and it makes no big difference ...
You see I usually anchor with my pinky only, and lightly. When I make a fist or any such arrangement it makes no difference, however I find that on doing sweeps, I unconsciously "unanchored" before anyhows, in order to free a finger for the odd tap :)But I will from now on try to not rest my pinky as all your points make sense, as in restricting freedom. My big challenge is 3 string sweeps. Impossible.
@HRage i also use to anchor only with my pinky, and know when i do long alternate picking runs on a minor scale i m tryin to unanchor but in a sens i was also doing it before as when i was hitting the low strings my hand was already floating ^^
@D0nRidah good point. Amazing how these things are never intuitive. But, maybe it takes the skill of a master to make these discernments in the first place.
I am really trying to make some progress and am nowhere near your level but feel you make a shitload more sense than most tutorials I come across (even though they help :)
When I feel confident I will follow your lead and make instructional vids too :D
great lesson. I call it "fist picking" where you basically make a closed fist, you can also use the mass of your entire hand to get a very strong attack on the string instead of just using your fingers. so you also get wider articulation. You just have to make sure that your left hand can silence the higher strings while palm mutes the lower strings
Great videos Ben. Could you possibly explain/do a video explaining the angle of the pick in relation to the body and strings of the guitar as it's very difficult to see from this angle. Thanks.
I find your approach to anchoring very interesting. You and I have almost the exact same technique but I anchor my pinkie finger in an area on the body ov my guitar slightly below the bridge pickup as to minimize the movement ov my picking hand when shredding. I just "detach" my pinkie from the body when I sweep so I don't get messed up. Green grapes vs red grapes, I suppose. Anyway, this is a really well done picking tutorial. Great work. \,,/
hey ben, nice lesson, one question when drawing the circle in circle picking which direction do you pick it? counter clock wise or counter clockwise (when going down and up the strings)?
hey, just a quick question regarding your opinions on picking as you seem pretty accomplished.....
when people pick fast, the motions of circle picking seem very subtle, is this because the thumb moves that quick or is the action just less exaggerated?
is this anochoring, the side of my palm is resting on the Stop Tailpiece P.S. this tecnique doesnt make my sweep worse, its kinda fluid as well because my can rotate easy
Wow, young lad teaches us older players some excellent tips. I'm impressed. I'm going to take those techniques and use them in my playing. Many thanks.

hey ben awesome video helped me alot with my picking did you know that dunlop make an xl version of the jazz 3 ? i didnt like the little pick, but i did like the accuracy you got with the point of the pick. then i found out they make a xl version of the jazz 3 (which is basically a normal sized jazz 3) so i started used it them and ive never looked back to play with a normal just feels wierd . anyway i would highly recomend them and you should definatly try them out! :)
