  • Thanks for the tips, i held my pick exactly like you did before and i always noticed i was sloppy with it and had massive trouble when i tried to play speed parts! but now that im holding the pick like you said im ALOT less sloppy and its made the sound more smooth when i play! keep up the vids man

  • i just realized ever since i started playing I've picked like that.

  • really helpful, thanks a lot for making this!

  • i'll apply your "non-anchoring" technique, will be trying that for couple weeks, then i'll hit u back ;)

  • @faridzayish how did you go?

  • the guitar schnozza

  • You are an awesome shredder! Thanks for the tips...I agree with you on the pick holding technique and I agree the anchoring can slow you down as well.. Nice shredding!

  • thx so much dude! i can already play better!

  • iout my pinkie near the bridge a a suport do u think that would make harder to play BENWHILSHIRE???

  • Thanks so much, you just made me realise what was my problem of advancing in picking, :D:D

  • 9:10 "I never used or recommend any picking exercises..." up next, my video on picking exercises. hahaha your playing is fantastic bro

  • @Robtron3030

Was sort of talking about particular exercises such as the chromatic one though i do now really like that one for warm ups! Cheers dude!

    Ben

  • @benwilshire hey man, i hold the pick about halfway between the way you used to, and the method you use now. but i use mostly motion from my index and thumb instead of moving my wrist, problem is i max out around 145bpm and i have been for awhile. am i going to need to change to doing this or never get any better? its hard because the way im used to doing it is totally different.

  • mmm the best pickers I know do make a fist when they play (not all the time of course) Paul Gilbert and Dimebag Darrell

  • i've been picking the way you used to pick for nearly 2 years, and i find it way too dificult to pick your way..im curious because maybe your picking would give me an improvement over mine but its too weird, how long did it take you to get used to the new way?

  • holy fuck... i tried this out of sheer interest for five minutes and already found an improvement in my playing.

  • how long have you been playing??

  • what amp do you use in this video?

  • you're a very cool dude.

    thanks for the lesson.

  • Keep replaying 4:47 :')

  • Thanks so much Ben, I gave up on picks a while ago cos my nail was faster, but I've started using them again and didn't get half the speed I did with my nail. I tried this technique and it felt really natural immediately so they must be simalar positioning. Halped so much! :)

  • What's weird is that I watched the Paul Gilbert vid where he talks about this technique before watching this one lol all in all, this is an awesome and very helpful vid

  • you look and sound like marty friedman, just with britsh accent :o

  • Thanks bro! Long time bass player exploring shred guitar as a serious second language =-)

I really had to fine tune my picking after your vid. Thanks, and you are an excellent bass player as well! Lessons from the mind of a guitar player on bass would be interesting if you are bored! lol.

  • nice lesson... you're cute btw

  • Haha my guitar teacher said once to me that it was bad to pick, like that hehe good lesson

  • been playing like this for as long as I remember, still suck though ^^

  • 4:46 i always used to wank up to about a year ago when i got my malmsteen strat

  • awesome man thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.great job keep it up bro.

  • Great lesson, thx alot Ben.

    Cheers,

    Robin :o)

  • I've been playing almost 40 years and I knew something was missing as far as my right hand technique but I wasn't sure what to do. I just tried your method and I think it is great. Thanks a bunch mate. Hope that one day soon you play in Middle Georgia, USA. I'll be in the front row.

  • @bullcrapitis

Thanks alot mate :) That means alot :) All the best to you!!!

  • Do you have any tips for when alternate picking across strings? When I go down onto the next string from an upstroke on the previous string (and vice versa) I just cant do it, I always catch the string I just finished with as a move over it...Really hard to explain! I hope you get it

  • Nice.

  • nice job

  • i thought this was a marty friedman video at first lol

  • Hey, I've got a question.

What picks do you use? Cause I've been doing this technique for a while now but I can't get the tone I want out of the unwound strings. It's quiet and kinda "mushy"? I used to use 88mm Tortex's or Nylons but now I have to carve some of the tip off to make it sharper to get a articulate and clean sound. What do you suggest I do? I've tried picks like Jazz III's but I find them kind of sterile sounding.

  • Hi Ben, great vid

I have a quaestion regarding (right hand) pivot points - (something you did'nt discuss).

Where and how exactly do you place your picking hand on the guitar ? - (Do you place the side of your hand on the bridge or the strings etc, or do you place large pad of your thumb on these, or is your hand entirely floating etc ?)

  • @merseyguy1974 I have the very same question, where's your ancher point on the guitar?

  • Spot on with the pick hold, I had exactly the same problem! I also agree on the chromatic exercises, but I will give the "unanchoring" a go! Thanks for the tips :)

  • @HRage i ll try to unanchore also but it fells pretty strange and uncomfortable at first..

  • @D0nRidah Actually I tried it now for about 20 mins and it makes no big difference ...

You see I usually anchor with my pinky only, and lightly. When I make a fist or any such arrangement it makes no difference, however I find that on doing sweeps, I unconsciously "unanchored" before anyhows, in order to free a finger for the odd tap :)But I will from now on try to not rest my pinky as all your points make sense, as in restricting freedom. My big challenge is 3 string sweeps. Impossible.

    Cheers!

  • @HRage i also use to anchor only with my pinky, and know when i do long alternate picking runs on a minor scale i m tryin to unanchor but in a sens i was also doing it before as when i was hitting the low strings my hand was already floating ^^

  • @D0nRidah good point. Amazing how these things are never intuitive. But, maybe it takes the skill of a master to make these discernments in the first place.

I am really trying to make some progress and am nowhere near your level but feel you make a shitload more sense than most tutorials I come across (even though they help :)

When I feel confident I will follow your lead and make instructional vids too :D

  • @HRage it seems like you re talking to the guy who made this video, but it s not me lol ^^

  • oh yeah and also your picking comes from your wrist not from your elbow.

  • great lesson. I call it "fist picking" where you basically make a closed fist, you can also use the mass of your entire hand to get a very strong attack on the string instead of just using your fingers. so you also get wider articulation. You just have to make sure that your left hand can silence the higher strings while palm mutes the lower strings

  • Great videos Ben. Could you possibly explain/do a video explaining the angle of the pick in relation to the body and strings of the guitar as it's very difficult to see from this angle. Thanks.

  • I hold the pick the same way. :D

  • you look like Marty Friedman

  • I find your approach to anchoring very interesting. You and I have almost the exact same technique but I anchor my pinkie finger in an area on the body ov my guitar slightly below the bridge pickup as to minimize the movement ov my picking hand when shredding. I just "detach" my pinkie from the body when I sweep so I don't get messed up. Green grapes vs red grapes, I suppose. Anyway, this is a really well done picking tutorial. Great work. \,,/

  • Nice video man, thanks for reccomending it, it actually helped a lot! Thanks for everything mate and keep on rocking \m/

  • Holy shit >< cheers dude.

  • hey ben, nice lesson, one question when drawing the circle in circle picking which direction do you pick it? counter clock wise or counter clockwise (when going down and up the strings)?

  • looks like my picking is correct but i cant play like yngwie lol

  • hey, just a quick question regarding your opinions on picking as you seem pretty accomplished.....

when people pick fast, the motions of circle picking seem very subtle, is this because the thumb moves that quick or is the action just less exaggerated?

    cheers

  • is this anochoring, the side of my palm is resting on the Stop Tailpiece P.S. this tecnique doesnt make my sweep worse, its kinda fluid as well because my can rotate easy

  • Wow, young lad teaches us older players some excellent tips. I'm impressed. I'm going to take those techniques and use them in my playing. Many thanks.

  • @10oooo01

    Hello mate

    Appreciate the kind words man:)

    Ben

  • @benwilshire urm yeah i be be like playing ...... ha ,lol,lmao...... it,s how fast you can play your mind art into your instrument. Ha ha ha you rest your pick and then you be like play fasttttttt haaaa lol benwiilshire will never be yng the yng ha ben what a blank...........................

  • @BaraCara1 Dude ,

He didnt state anywhere that he was teaching Yngwie , actually , he compared the picking style with Paul Gilbert's , not yngwies. Second , just because he sounds a bit like Yngwie when he plays does not mean hes trying to copy him , his playing is only influenced by Yngwie. Third , He isnt teaching yngwie , even in his picking exercises video , hes only playing a simple Am run. Finally , hes not trying to be Yngwie , hes trying to help people with their picking technique. :)

  • @BaraCara1 your a stupid knob aren't you. oh and a jealous cunt too. he is teaching picking technique, not how to play like yngwie.

  • And how much time do you have using the new picking techinique?

  • @joshuaph85

    Hello man

Ive been picking like this for about a year and a half maybe a bit more. Makes a big difference quickly though if you dont normally pick like this.

    Ben

  • @benwilshire Thaks and very good lesson i hoppe it helps me whit mi picking technique

  • How old are u guy?

  • @magodeozjavi

    18 the other week dude

  • Hi Ben, top stuff cheers :). You addressed the matter of anchoring the free fingers of the picking hand & the pitfalls. However, you did not confirm whether you braced the heel of your palm (on or near the bridge etc).

I find resting any part of my picking hand on the body of the guitar restrictive but based on advice & recommendations, I try to keep the thumb & upper part of the palm in light contact with the strings for muting purposes.

What are your views & recommendations on this?

  • @BornNonconformist

    Hello mate

Yeah muting was something i should have added. I like to rest on the bridge very very slightly just to mute the strings for leads just to keep it clean. Only a tiny bit so's not to dampen the note but just keeps the ringing open strings away.

What your doing sounds very good and very efficient to me. If its working for you then i would stick with that because it sounds like a good technique.make sure everything is clean and the notes ring out whenneed be.

    Ben

  • @benwilshire

OK cheers for the useful tip. I am still learning and grateful for every bit of advice especially from technically advanced supremos like you :). Incidentally, even with my very limited skills I can see that your technique is superb. I'll be a truly happy camper when I can play at 0.01% of your level :).

    Thanks once again

  • hey ben awesome video helped me alot with my picking did you know that dunlop make an xl version of the jazz 3 ? i didnt like the little pick, but i did like the accuracy you got with the point of the pick. then i found out they make a xl version of the jazz 3 (which is basically a normal sized jazz 3) so i started used it them and ive never looked back to play with a normal just feels wierd . anyway i would highly recomend them and you should definatly try them out! :)
  • Haha! It really is like watching a mini chappers with all those "Badass" phrases going on!

Top lesson though Ben, you really do have some proper talent mate, hope to meet you at some point in the future with Chappers.

    Cheers.

    Sted.

  • Thanks, a really helpful lesson (: I really improved my picking a lot (: Before watching this I was practicing for weeks, but I didn't improve as much as I did in these few days (: So, really, thanks a lot!

I just have a question... How do you recommend using the metronome (you didn't mention it in the video)? And please don't say ''start at a slow speed then gradually speed up'' because that's what everyone says... Do you have any specific tricks on how you used the metronome?

    Cheers (:

  • Hey Ben, great lesson! I found out about you through Chappers and immediately had to subscribe. Awesome lesson but is there anything you could recommend to build up speed with my left/fretting hand. Thanks :) Keep shredding.

  • 5 Stars

  • I'm screwed, been picking the same way for 10 years. Theres no way I can force through this new way now, even though I am certain it's more efficient.

  • Respect mate :)

  • Hey Ben, is there any chance you could post some pictures or a video of your picking hand from a guitarists eye view?

    Cheers

  • @RustyR

    Hi mate

I'll try and fit some in on a future technique video.

    :)

    Ben

  • Luckily for me, when I first picked up the guitar it was natural for me to pick in the same form a paul gilbert- After aout 6 months I was tremolo picking and all this crazy stuff haha. Got lucky I suppose. I wish I had worked harder on my theory back then though :/

  • hey man you should teach the run you do at 3:15 coz it would be cool

  • nice lesson mate cheers teach more yingwei stuff there arent many lesson on youtube on yingwei stuff i loved that pedal lick lesson really fun too play

  • nice lesson mate cheers

  • thanks soooo much for the lesson ben!

my picking has improved a bunch :-)

  • "'Ello Goiys :D this is moi leshurn awn (lettuce) picken' techneek".

    Legend .^_^

  • hey man thanks alot for your last two vids! They were really helpful! Cant wait to see more in the future!

  • nice looking ML1!

  • Great stuff dude! ;-)

  • The way you pick now is the way i've always picked, it's way comfortable and very accurate. Never really thought about it until its been brought up here though. Great lesson mate ;) keep up the good work.

  • Chappers picks! How are those!?

Also, I've already been picking like this, but this is a great lesson to anyone who doesn't! You're becoming a good teacher :-)

  • I already did it like that, and I still suck D: I guess practice makes perfect...

  • THANKS FOR THIS! amazingly helpful!

  • Well presented on some important tips -- great job!

  • great stuff Ben!

  • Thanks Ben ,,awesome lesson ,,\M/

  • Could you do a lesson similar to this on alternate picking? Like put in some exercises that you found helpful? thanks :)

  • Wicked Ben, thanks for this. Do you pick with the pointiest edge of the pick? i.e. the point that comes to the narrowest bit? Because I've always picked with the more lengthy curved side.. maybe this is why my alternate picking is rubbish?

  • @sportsportsport

    Hi mate

Yeah i use the pointiest edge and choke it alot as well meaning that only a tiny tiny pit of point is sticking out from your thumb which makes picking alot faster easier over time.

    Ben

  • @benwilshire Ah ok mate. Thanks a lot for making this video! You explain things really well!.. Make more..=)

  • I anchor or unanchor depending on the speed of what im playing, i dont think about it i just do it automatically.
