Since Matsushita (subsidiary of Panasonic, the ones who bought and discarded the 3D0 M2 project) was the manufacturer of the mini-DVD reading units for the GameCube, there was an agreement between Nintendo and Panasonic to develop an alternate GameCube, similar to Hitachi (SH2 Chip)and JVC with the Sega Saturn.

The Panasonic Q had a DVD reader, but it was very expensive.
