Wow... I didn't think video of this game show even existed. Does a full episode exist? I don't remember the format of the show. Just when contestants lost, they were pulled backwards through the door. -- Great childhood memories. Thanks for the clip.
This shows little theme's stuck in my head - for years. Personally, I don't know Mr. Wade, but my dad was friends with him, and says he's a great guy. I wish weekdays went back to having fun, gameshows, instead of the crap they do.
@altfactor The last CBS game show to be produced in New York but the first to have a black (African-American) game show host in Adam Wade, who was not only an excellent singer whose biggest hit was "Take Good Care of Her" but worked for Dr. Jonas Salk. . It opened the door for Spencer Christian (hosted Triple Threat on BET), Wayne Brady (Let's Make A Deal on CBS), and Alfonso Ribiero (Catch 21 on GSN).
Adam Wade, the first black game show host. CBS wouldn't have another black game show host for another 34 years with Wayne Brady hosting "Let's Make A Deal".
I always thought I would be the next black game show host on CBS. Well, I can be the next "GREAT" black game show host on CBS. (lol)
@Yobachi2007 The only thing Musical Chairs had in common with the party game was its title. This was a bona fide game show, where contestants buzzed in to pick one of three missing lyrics. The fun part was when the first lyric sung wasn't the right one: when lyric "B" started, contestants would either buzz in "B" as the correct answer, or "C" if "B" was obviously incorrect. Either way, the result would be a flurry of buzzers. Fun!
Today on a rerun of "Match Game '75", Gene Rayburn announced the up-coming premiere of this show. It's quite fortunate that someone has posted a clip of this; very interesting!
Long time since I saw this show. I don't remember the lyrics of the theme song, but it was one of 2 shows with lyrics in its theme. The other, of course, was the theme for 'To Tell The Truth', introduced in the fall of 1969, which was used until 1978.
I remember watching this show in my teens and though it was a valiant, groundbreaking effort to bring along the first African-American game show host in Adam Wade, Musical Chairs flopped due to a weak format and not a lot of affiliate clearances who carried local and syndicated programming.
There were shows I remember that featured Shari Lewis, Margaret Whiting and The Tokens. It was also one of the few game show themes that was sung.
This is the only game show in TV history to feature the talents of Adam Wade (who had the hits "Take Good Care of Her", "The Writing on the Wall" and "Ruby" in the early '60s) and music business legend Don Kirshner.
WOW, I would love to see more of this. I remember watching as a kid and I remember Sister Sledge being the house band. My first childhood crush was actually Kathy Sledg ewhile watching this show...pleeeease give me more
Adam Wade became the first Afro-American game show host in 1975 with the short-lived "Musical Chairs". This was as historic as Arthur Duncan joining the Lawrence Welk Show in 1964, and joining these moments will be the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first Afro-American President of the U.S.
Actually, no. "To Tell the Truth" and "The $10,000/$20,000/$25,000 Pyramid would still be taped there until their demises in 1978 and 1981 respectively. Also, "The $128,000 Question" (1976-1978) had its first season taped in New York (and at the Ed Sullivan Theater as well).
This was on CBS' daytime schedule at 4pm(et) {eventually shown at 1pm in New York because WCBS-TV carried an hour-long version of the syndicated "DINAH!" locally at 4, followed by an hour of "MIKE DOUGLAS" at 5}. Adam was incorrect in saying Irene Cara "never sung on network television before" [1:33]- she first appeared as a VERY young contestant on "TED MACK'S ORIGINAL AMATEUR HOUR" on CBS one Sunday afternoon in 1967 {see related YouTube posting}.
No one I've ever mentioned Musical Chairs to remembers it. I loved it! This, High Rollers and The Price is Right. I can still tell you how much a box of Spic N' Span cost in 1976.
Awesome find! Haven't seen this show since it originally aired but remembered the opening theme. And it's nice to see the CBS cross-promotion happening, with Mary Stuart from Search for Tomorrow. I wonder if Don Stewart from The Guiding Light (also a singer, but usually just Christmas episodes) ever appeared on Musical Chairs?
imagine Musical Chairs being revived for Fox with Wayne Brady as host and Rickey Minor as bandleader should lyrics leave the air. It would be so d*** cool!
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!i've haven't seen this game in years.adam wade was the host and sister sledge was the singers.i was 10 years old when this show came on.I GOT TO SHOW MY MOM THIS ON YOU TUBE.we used to watch this show on t.v.thanks you tube.this show bring me back memories in the 70's
As an african-american, seeing a black game show host made me proud.....and on my birth year......NIEEECE!!!! I wonder if Fillipe Wynne was still the lead singer of The Spinners when they made their appearance on this show.
I use to love this show. It came on mid afternoon so right when we got home from school you could catch the last 15min.
What was sad is when one of the people lost a round their chair would go in reverse. So if you were the first out of the game adam would say some nice words and your chair would retreat and the door would close. Oh the horror! As you watch the people waving until the door shut after a loss. Until there was two left and they played to the wire.
Try saying "after school day care center" three times fast, as "Musical Chairs" announcer Pat Hernon [1924-83] did in introducing one of the contestants.
I hope the rest of the episode is downloaded fairly soon. I had a little trouble understanding how the game was played the few times I watched it in first-run. And like a number of game shows, written summaries of the rules don't do it justice.
Exactly! In relation to Letterman's show, the contestants were in what is now the area for Paul Schaffer's band, and the area where the performers entered is the area where Dave comes in today. My guess is that the live band on the show was the area between Dave's desk and Alan Kalter's desk.
Wow... I didn't think video of this game show even existed. Does a full episode exist? I don't remember the format of the show. Just when contestants lost, they were pulled backwards through the door. -- Great childhood memories. Thanks for the clip.

Adam was THE MAN! Talk about "Unsung". Wayne Brady, Steve Harvey, Nick Cannon and many others owe it ALL to him...the FIRST Black host of a gameshow.
All you haters keep ya mouths shut and move on to ya Lil Wayne crap videos!

A few years later, Irene Cara would be a superstar thanks to her recording of the theme from "Fame".
I believe "Musical Chairs" was the last CBS daytime game show ever produced in New York.

I can't believe they made a game show out of this. Where's Duck, Duck, Goose, or the Hide and Go Seek Game Show?
Irene Cara was as lovely as always, though.

Musical Chairs aired on CBS June 16 - October 31, 1975. On November 3, 1975, CBS expanded The Price is Right to 1 hour.

Yes, and the show that "Price" bumped out of the 9:00 A.M.
(Los Angeles) slot, "Give-N-Take", took over "Musical Chairs" 3:00 P.M. slot until it too was cancelled.
