In the end it comes clear that G-d send this message to avoid the people of Israel.

Enc., 1925 ed., p. 41: "Edom is modern Jewry." So the fact is, Edom is impersonating Jacob, and claiming to be the Chosen. For at Exo 4:22, Yah says: "Israel is my son, even my firstborn". Not Esau.
The better question would be why does Esau seek to usurp Jacob's heritage. The short answer is jealousy. The long answer is, well, long.

So when we read this we immediately think about holocaust and other difficulties that jews passed throughout centuries. After the true Israelites were carried away into Babylon, with Edom aiding and abetting, the Edomites from the land of Idumea, to the south of Judea, came up into Judea, and took over. (Obad 1:10-15 speaks of that, also Ps 137:7).
