I remember seeing highlight videos like NHL ice hot and others when i was kid and I allways wondered why so many times some guys play without helmet.. I thought they had just dropped their helmets allways.. Tough guys, 90's NHL was very physichal and hitting to head with shoulder was not even against the rules, and skates were allowed to leave the ice when hitting...
It's interesting to me that everyone is talking about more stringent rules and better equipment for the players because of concussions. I don't seem to remember that being an issue for MacT and hockey in the 80s and 90s included guys whose sole purpose was to rough it up. Something doesn't make sense here.
@surfer53 equipments harder (or should i say armor), its A LOT faster all around, the two line pass rule is no longer in effect, stick work is mitigated, and basically everything is becoming an infraction which would slow a player down. faster game+faster players+harder equipment=more injuries.
@surfer53 Guys just played with concussions, not knowing they even had one. Now some guys are in hospital beds and can't talk anymore. 50 years ago, we didnt know cigarettes harmed us, does that mean they don't ?
Yeah, only an asshole like Mactavish can kill a young woman (drunk driving) and can come back after less than a year and and have a great life and career.now thats justice!!! ASSHOLE!!!
@jkappianaq My comment was in response to a person who said "only an asshole like Mactavish can kill a young woman (drunk driving) and can come back after less than a year and and have a great life and career." I'm aware of MacTavishes past, but at least he spent some time in jail. Heatley's crap was just swept under the rug and forgotten about.
The league should have accomadated for no helmets. Today, it has the worst of both worlds with more concussions and neck and back injuries and far less personality and individuality that characterized the helmetless years. Maybe things like enlarged rinks and stricter penalties concerning boarding and elbowing and high sticking infractions would have created a reasonable margin of safety for those choosing to go without headgear.
@mitchoner I actually read an interview with him. MacT said he got rid of the headgear around about his third season while in the minors circa 1982-83.
What do you guys care so much about him wearing a helmet or not?? Isn't it his problem if he gets injured? A helmet is there to protect people, he chose not to listen so that's that. It's like crossing the street without a crossing guard or not wearing elbow pads and knee pads while inline skating. It's his decision so stop trying to be his mother/father.
Yeah by 97 the game was so much faster then in the 70s and 80s and the sticks so much better. He really could have been killed with a shot to the back of the head.
its pretty awesome that I got to see the last helmetless player in my lifetime. I remember McTavish when he was with the Flyers for about a year or two. That was when I first knew about the helmet rule.

When I first started watching hockey, every team seemed to have one guy without a helmet. I still think they were cool.
Rod Langway, Phil Russel, etc.
