Well, there are plenty of people who you want to talk to, yet you don't want them to know your face yet if ever. Instead of voice-only or wearing a silly mask, you can just use an avatar to protect your privacy. Add in voice altering software and you can be nearly unstalkable. But still able to have facial expressions. I say that's a plus.

Of course, they can do better than just cartoon characters. I expect high polygon human figures soon enough, like being Ryu from StreetFighter 4.
