Mini Horse talking to a Great Dane

Well, Great dane are known to be gentle with children and other animal despite their size. Their size are just for show and intimidation but deep down they are very gentle and friendly. Any livestock guardian dog can make good companion for mini horsesdue to their protective instinct.

Is it true that other animal friends can replace a horse friend for a pet horse?

(breeders usually recommend buying 2, but I hear people's ponies befriending sheep/ dogs...)

No, we only have Saber.

With some horses they'll have all sorts of animal buddies.. others not so much.

That';s true. Horses are herd animals and need company. Therefore many buy sheeps and goats and horses simpely befriend with them.
