Sorry what did Gazza achieve at World level? I've looked and can't see any medals handed out for being a losing semi-finalist.
Best played against World class opponents at European level and actually won honours.
NI is a tiny country so he had no chance of making a WC let alone getting to the latter stages of one.

Gazza was an inspirational player and personality, really sad that he never went on to have a great career. He connected with his team mates and the fans. The 1990 World Cup made him but the massive press attention he got distracted him. As someone else said, after the 1991 FA cup, he was never quite the same player, though he definitely had his moments. English football hasn't produced anyone like him since.

but you have to agree, at his peak - the lad was what messi is today - he was fucking unplayable and would make markers/defenders look daft. He had pace, but it was his close control on the ball that I loved best about Gazza. True Legend of the game.

I think the England team started going downhill when Beckham became the captain and his Man Utd manager told him to concentrate on football instead of his wife's chavy celeb attention seeking, so he moved to Spain where he was only there to sell shirts to kids and in the world cup he was too tired to last the whole time on the pitch from the world cup parties so his wife could get in magazines.

I am English and very proud of Paul Gascoigne and Bobby Robson. Listen to end bit when Fergie says he was gutted Gazza signed for Spurs. I am not, maybe wouldve been then, but in hindsight, Gazza didnt have the discipline to make it at United. Fergie wouldve bought him August, sold him 2 years down the line for being an annoying kid, and who knows maybe he wouldnt have gone on to play for England.
