What allies? Have you read the whole real story? Spartans went only simply because athenians and the rest were fully afraid to go against the persian empire. Spartans were the first ones who flamed the war against the persians who wanted to conquer whole Greece. Only their death woke up the national alarm.

my point was that the spartans waged war against other city states in greece so long that they lost their advantage: when the other greeks got used to their strategies they won cuz the spartans were so dogmatic that they used the same procedure over and over again... and eventually became more a living museum than a strong city state

While I do understand your point, you have to also understand that if spartans weren't moving a finger against them, that would mean persians conquering their lands and use their resources to move north. The rest Greece was literaly sleeping when spartans were fighting. So basically it was a thing worth dying for, trully if you think about it for a moment :)

its true that spartans are awesome and did eventually defeat the persians. but unlike in the movie they never came out of the canyon, they stayed in a phalanx the entire time. also the 300 stayed behind so that all the others who were retreating back to their own city-states would have time to prepare. finally the other purpose of the battle was to allow the greek ships to get to where they needed to be. the greeks won because of the sea battle, but i think they atill would have won anyway...
