Buc Wheats were the best cereal ever. I used to love biting into that one buc wheat that seemed to have all the honey and sugar on it. I lived in a home with four teenagers in it. Whenever grocery bags were brought home, we would rip them apart until we found the one with the Buc Wheats inside. Then we would devour our favorite cereal like piranhas!
General Mills discontinued "Buc-Wheats" for the same reason they stopped making several of their other cereals: not enough sales to justify making more [that's why you haven't seen "Kaboom" or "Country Corn Flakes" on grocers' shelves in the past several years, either]. I agree...the taste WAS quite good.
My mom forced this nasty cearal upon me and my siblings when we were kids. I HATED this when I was a kid! We begged for anything other than this. NO DICE!!
I remember Buc Wheats in the 70s. It's too bad General Mills took it off the market because it was really good. There was another commercial with the descriptive line "That New England breakfast taste."
I liked BucWheats too, but I never thought they had enough maple flavoring. You'd get a lot of plain flakes and some maple covered ones. I started putting more syrup on mine. When my mom saw my doing this, she said she was gonna stop buying BucWheats, and just buy 40% Bran Flakes, (which were cheaper), and I could put syrup on those.
Does anyone remember Eddie Murphy doing a routine on how Buckwheat got his name? I remember it but it's been a while since I heard it. I remember that Buckwheat's sister was Trix and she was a prostitute, Buckwheat had two cousins, one was retarded and was called Special K and had a gay cousin named Lucky Charms. I know I'm missing something else.
I ate BucWheats 3-4 times a day during most of my childhood. This is especially funny, since my mom was a nutrition Nazi, and I didn't taste Coke until I went to grade school. On top of that, I covered them with lots of honey (again healthy according to my mom). I am a pediatrician now, and pretty health conscious about what I eat, but if I saw BucWheats back on the shelf I know what would happen...
They were my favorite as a kid too. But one day in the mid-70s my school sent out a list of all cereals ranked from healthiest to worst. Buc Wheats might have been the very worst or close to it. It was at least as bad as Sugar Smacks, Count Chocula, and other known-to-be-sugary cereals. My mom stopped buying it after she saw that list. I was very sad.
Oh, I SO forgot about BucWheats! They WERE awesome. As soon as I saw this picture, I could taste them. Yes, they were hard, crackly, and sweet, and Mom, who would never dream of buying something cool like Cookie Crisp or Boo Berry, felt like BucWheats were okay.
I liked this cereal because my mom would buy it for me, unlike Trix and Froot Loops. Buc-Wheats gave the impression of being a healthy food, when it was actually about 70% sugar. Lesson: if I ever have a kid, I'm going to taste everything first before I let him eat it.
When I mention this cereal to people around my age (45ish), no one remembers it. Boy, I do! Like everyone else, I can still taste the maple grainy favor. Thanks, for posting and proving I'm not flaky :-)
OH - I LOVED this cereal and would be thrilled to taste them again. I grew up eating them in the 70's. They were DELICIOUS. We should contact General Mills, maybe if enough people wrote them, you never know...
Oh - What I would give to taste Buc-Wheats again!! I loved these sooooo much in the 70's when I was growing up. I agree that we should all petition General Mills to bring them back. If enough people write them, you never know...
This...was my FAVORITE CEReAL OF ALL TIME!!! If given the choice between any other cereal and Buc-Wheats, I'd always go for the later, even if the first choice was Fruity Pebbles or Captain Crunch! Buc-Wheats came back for a little bit in the early 80's, then was gone forever. Like Sourcream & Onion Doritos (oh, those were so good!) and Burger Chef restaurants.
Oh, man, I'd give a whole dollar to get this cereal back. My gramma and I used to eat it every morning, and I'd snack on it dry right out of the box -- I looooooved how the flakes would all stick together in clumps! Like candy. How would one go about petitioning to get a cereal back?!?
I freakin loved this cereal with all my heart. Somewhere around 1990 I called General Mills to ask if they still made it and they told me to try golden wheaties. WHAT THE HECK EVER! Nothing like buckwheats. I would eat it everyday all over again if they made this cereal again. I loved it so much, I used to eat it in handfulls right out of the box. Thank you for posting this commercial! Fond Memories!!
Boy!! I use to have Buc-Wheats all the time for breakfast back in the late 70's. The delicious maple syrup taste on whole goodness flakes...Started my day right!!!! Bring back some old goodness!!!
Holy cow! I didn't think any one else remembered this cereal! No one else I have ever talked to knew what I was talking about. My mother used to give us this stuff when I was quite young. It was pretty good for a boring looking cereal. I miss this stuff. Only thing I have found to come close to it was to drizzle some real maple syrup on a bowl of Wheaties. I never saw the commercials for this stuff, but that's definitely the box I remember on the breakfast table! :-)
With a "SNAP" of maple flavor!!! :-) I recall picking the maple ones right out of the box! You could tell which ones were loaded because they looked shinier than the regular flakes!! Really miss that stuff!
I've always missed Buc Wheats cereal and its great taste. I would love it if they brought it back! I wish they would bring back Quisp too, and Puffed Wheat in the bag.
half sugar half puffed wheat, the bottom of the bowl the only thing left was a little milk and 10 spoons of sugar. I Liked the ones with popeye on the bag. thanks for the memories.
This cereal was a dirty trick, designed to trick moms into buying a sugary cereal. She never tried my Buc-Wheats, so she wasn't aware of the massive amount of sugar in it. Best cereal ever!!
yes best cereal ever. I used to eat the whole box the same day my mom brought them home from the store, so she stopped buying them after warning me over and over! I really miss them. Yes Frosted Flakes Gold is reminiscent of Buc-Wheats, but nowhere near as good. I miss Buc-Wheats very much.
Buc-Wheats were better than Frosted Flakes Gold because of the strong maple flavor, and the thicker, heartier flake. I remember exactly how they tasted, although it's been twenty-five years since I had Buc-Wheats and I don't eat sweets anymore. If they'd bring this cereal back I think I'd make an exception.
I actually test marketed these in a mall when I was a really little kid... maybe 4-5... I loved them, and I miss them! I picked them out as my favorite over probably five other cereals. Discomurf is right. They were phenomenal.
damn i am so sad these arent around anymore...crack in a box before anyone knew what crack wuz...thanks for posting, brings back fond memories..."really good!!"

A fair substitute are bran flakes with real maple syrup poured on them.
But the original BUC-WHEATS were dee-lish.
