One of my counselling clients is inconsolable with grief & guilt following his reaction to a friend’s practical joke last year.

He was withdrawing cash from an ATM when his friend approached him from behind, jabbed a pen into back & told him to hand the money over or get knifed. My client instinctively span round and hit him (holding a bunch of keys), causing the ‘thief’ to lose an eye & suffer mild brain damage.

I tell him not to blame himself, but this message seems to fall on deaf ears.
