I agree with all here, great singer/songwriter. the byrds have produced so many singer/songwriters, and fabulos musicians like clarence white. they along with the beach boys are americas great Icons of the 60s and beyond.
@ClubViking63 Sorry friend, but you're wrong on both counts. Versions of 'Tried So Hard ' by both the Burritos and Ian Matthews exist on ' The Flying Burrito Bros' and 'Somedays You Eat The Bear And Somedays The Bear Eats You' respectively. Both cuts are also available as mp3 downloads on Amazon for a paltry 69 pence (stirling) each. Two bargain covers of a great song that no music lover should be without
Gene left the Byrds of his own accord. As he did with most things in his life.
He had a distinctive and great voice, but his real contribution was his prolific songwriting. A great, sensitive songwriter. one of the best of that generation.
This is absolute bs, he was not 'kicked' or 'squeezed' out of the band by the other mofos, Gene had massive flight phobia, they couldn't take him overseas, they couldn't travel quickly to the east coast.
And few of the Byrds even helped him record his great debute With the Gosdin bros.
@livegreenday like all musicians Gene dreamed of fronting his own band and doing his own thing. He never really left the Byrds though. He wrote 8 Mile High, he appears on the NBB album and on the reunion album. He toured with McGuin Clark and Hillman and performed with Crosby Hillman and Mcguinn at the Boarding House in 1978. Chris and Mike also performed on most of Gene's solo albums, and he appeared on McGuinn's first solo album and they all appear on Gene's Road master album.
@RossM3838 Uh, yes, he did leave the Byrds. He rejoined for a short time after Crosby was fired during the "Notorious Byrd Brothers" sessions, but he was gone for the majority of "5th Dimension", "Younger Than Yesterday" and everything following NBB.
Of course the Byrds continued dealing with one another after Gene left. That tends to happen when you share the same management company and record label. But Gene Clark was no longer a Byrd.
Yep, Gene was the talent, the true "American Dreamer". He was the cutest of the Byrds lot as well. I know because I'm waaayyy old (tho younger than any of them)...and Crosby is NO great talent.
Crosby never apologized, but he made an attempt to reach out to Gene towards the end of his life. At that point, Gene wasn't listening and it was too late.
ManhattenLove, you may not be aware of the history here. Hoppuss44 is absolutely correct about Crosby. While he ultimately became an American musical institution, during his stint with the Byrds ('64-'67) he was a real bastard. It was his obnoxious, arrogant attitude that got him fired from the group. Furthermore, his continual harassment of Gene Clark's guitar playing wrecked havoc with Gene's self-confidence. As if Crosby should have talked, he's not exactly known as a guitar virtuosso.
I agree even though Crosby is talented in his own right I think Roger and David were way jealous of Gene and his talents plus bet he had more groupies!!!!
your lookin at the guy that wrote most of the songs for the first two years of the byrds right here! and that cunt crosby knocked him down to tambourine!
Aye such a simple song..yet another Geno classic. I saw Chris Hillman a couple of years ago with Herb Pederson, they did this one I recall... I went balistic..
was there ever a more true and authentic 20th century troubadour, in a way the story of Gene Clark and how the industry used and used his unparalled genius to feed the insane machine is the story of american the the murder of her dreams.
Gene Clark,Wish someone would check the audio track on this.some ches. But otherwise one of the greatest singer, writer, players we ever had.Think he ended up dying here in Nashville.Really sad.Peace
may be there are some young or old bands or songwriters in these years but none can reach the geniality of gene clark.

@SpectrumRob Ian Matthews does a great version on 'Somedays you eat the Bear' (1974). I think the Burritos covered it too.

@KerryGrl You just said a mouthful, the end to his Byrds career was precipitated by his Fear Of Flying! R.I.P Gene Clark you are missed!

The airplane excuse is entirely too simplistic. There were a multitude of reasons for Gene's departure, and yes, McGuinn and Crosby were two of them.

True enough, Gene was a great song writer. Too bad things went down hill for him in the '70s and '80s. I wonder if Crosby ever apologised to him.

crosby isn't a "cunt". don't speak so bad about a man who is so great.
ManhattenLove 2 years ago
Even Crosby probably regrets some of his unsavoury actions and behaviour back then. Or he is just a cunt.
