It became a success after Keira Knightley had appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean when it was re-released specifically to capitalise on her box office appeal. You can check the dates. Your great characters did not therefore get her out there, quite the opposite - if she had not succeeded with Pirates, Bend it like Beckham would have sunk without trace. They have much to thank her for.
