@Detectivefiction I guess it was a rather extreme statement. Maybe I was in a confrontational mood when I said 'I'd rather be a neo nazi'. That is probably not true. What I was trying to get across is that the catholic church has been responsible for millions of deaths also, and is still telling aids ridden Africans that condoms are a sin! So in a very real sense, the doctrine of catholicism is still killing people en mass today, whereas neo nazis are not. Religion generally is very divisive.

You are aware, aren't you, that neo-Nazis today are responsible for violence against Jews, etc, including synagogue arson attempts? My mother has a cousin with a gay son and my father has a cousin with a gay son swell. I'm sure it was hard for both families to accept at first but they wholly except it. We are all Catholics. I am all for gay rights. Gay or not, they are still their children and they should love them no matter what.

@BalladoftheWindfish Obviously he was not told the whole truth in church. They are too caught up in the hate the "abomination / person" aspect. Kids feel shame, so they dont ask for "help" . This is extremely common practice in churches. This is why we see the majority of suicides being gay kids who know they cant change. church obviously doesnt care about the human consequences.

I think the Bible and the Church are morally consistent - if you take the time to become familiar with the reasoning behind the teachings, I do not think anyone would ascribe those intentions to the Church at all. I do agree that we are prone to sin and weakness. Again, though, that should not stop anyone who knows the truth of the Faith from trying to live up to it. It is tough, to be sure, but it is worth it.

If you come out to your church you will be asked to leave, or silently shunned, even if you are chast (no one will ask). My friend who commited suicide was even judged / condemned at his funeral. sorry, but I dont think you can relate. Being gay is natural. It is not normal, but it is natural. Gore Vidal made a great point when he distinguished between natural and normal. Normal is what the majority of society practices, and natural is what is inborn. Your story is so typical of all parents. They have their ideas of what they want their sons and daughters to grow up to be, and when we don't , it is a blow to them. We can't help being gay, regardless of what the Church wants us to be or what society wants.
@bordenmartin I am afraid homosexuality is also quite normal, according to your definition, exclusive homosexuality might not be, but homosexual feelings and experiences are widespread enough to be considered also normal. And if there were not so much repression they would be even more widespread, as well as heterosexuality among many so called exclusively gay males. Bisexuality to a certain degree is what human nature should be, allowing for a repression free social environment.
@bordenmartin thats an interesting statement, but its slightly inaccurate. The church teaches what God wants for us. Being gay is an orientation, its not genetic need. Breathing is a genetic need and as such if you stop breathing you will die. I know people who have succeeded in changing their orientation. Its difficult but it can happen. Being gay is not a sin. Living a gay lifestyle (being homo-SEXUAL) is the sin. A person who chooses to be in right-relationship with God, is a holy person.
@bordenmartin Define normal. Human beings naturally have a various sexual preferences all over the scale from straight to gay, because the majority are straight doesn't make homosexuality abnormal. It makes the prevalence of straightness along the scale of normal human sexuality greater. If human beings are naturally straight and gay, being of either persuasion is perfectly normal. Coming out to your family and friends takes a lot of guts - even today. And, although the child (or whomever) should be prepared for some emotions, he should also be able to depend on their support.

I shall definitely keep this family in my prayers. They all seem like wonderful people. Unconditional love for one's gay children is certainly something that the Church teaches. As a Catholic myself, I believe that homosexuals should be treated with respect, compassion, and understanding. At the same time, we can never encourage the practice of that lifestyle, because it will keep them from coming into communion with God.
They except their son for the way god made him, they wont deny the possibility of love in his life. i personally dont believe the bible was interpreted correctly on this issue.

Wow! That is why religion is so divisive! I can't imagine being afraid for years to tell my parents if I was gay. And the parents being hailed as heroes for doing something which would come naturally to any decent parent. Religion is wonderful for those who are in it and all believe the same doctrine. @Detectivefiction I guess it was a rather extreme statement. Maybe I was in a confrontational mood when I said 'I'd rather be a neo nazi'. That is probably not true. What I was trying to get across is that the catholic church has been responsible for millions of deaths also, and is still telling aids ridden Africans that condoms are a sin! So in a very real sense, the doctrine of catholicism is still killing people en mass today, whereas neo nazis are not. Religion generally is very divisive.

My mother has a cousin with a gay son and my father has a cousin with a gay son swell. I'm sure it was hard for both families to accept at first but they wholly except it. We are all Catholics. This is extremely common practice in churches. This is why we see the majority of suicides being gay kids who know they cant change. church obviously doesnt care about the human consequences.

I think the Bible and the Church are morally consistent - if you take the time to become familiar with the reasoning behind the teachings, I do not think anyone would ascribe those intentions to the Church at all. I do agree that we are prone to sin and weakness. Again, though, that should not stop anyone who knows the truth of the Faith from trying to live up to it. It is tough, to be sure, but it is worth it.

If you come out to your church you will be asked to leave, or silently shunned, even if you are chast (no one will ask). My friend who commited suicide was even judged / condemned at his funeral. sorry, but I dont think you can relate. Being gay is natural. It is not normal, but it is natural. Gore Vidal made a great point when he distinguished between natural and normal. Normal is what the majority of society practices, and natural is what is inborn. Your story is so typical of all parents. They have their ideas of what they want their sons and daughters to grow up to be, and when we don't , it is a blow to them. @bordenmartin thats an interesting statement, but its slightly inaccurate. The church teaches what God wants for us. Being gay is an orientation, its not genetic need. Breathing is a genetic need and as such if you stop breathing you will die. I know people who have succeeded in changing their orientation. Its difficult but it can happen. Being gay is not a sin. Living a gay lifestyle (being homo-SEXUAL) is the sin. A person who chooses to be in right-relationship with God, is a holy person.

The Bible says that it's ok for men to control their wives, for people to sell their children as slave and to discriminate Jews. It also says that homosexuals go to hell. But are we supposed to misinterpret everything the Bible says? If it's wrong to control wives, sell kids and discriminate Jews(despite what the Bible says),then why can't homosexuality be part of life?

A great deal of judgement on this video and most of it from non-religious people!
Whether one finds it distasteful or not that these people are upset about their son's homosexuality it must be remembered how difficult this must have been for them. I for one think they are a beautiful and deeply spiritual family.
They have favour in the Eye of God. Haters of any persuasion don't.

In my view, if people will just try to accept

They look so sad in this video, like it's a terrible thing their Son is gay. IT'S NOT! He's HUMAN like everyone else! I am a straight man and I completely support gay people. I have relatives and friends who are gay and they are not nasty people. It's funny how people contradict God. They say God created all things, menaing he must have created homosexality as well. @bennjr -- yeah that's what the mother was trying to say around 2:25, that the sadness is not because the son is gay but because of the emotion surrounding his coming out. At least that's what I think, I can't hear what she is saying at 2:49

@sleekcartim First of all I don't even believe in hell, Im saying his parents who believe in the Christian faith will have to believe this. Unless they think that one of the major books is wrong, something hard for a christian to do.
Secondly, unless there is some new revolutionary science or crazy black magic there is no way in hell two men or two women are going to have Blood Children.
It will be possible someday, but now they can only do that with Chicken eggs.

The church has a looong bloody history of torchure, killing, nonbelievers. Church started this Uganda gay genocide. denying these well known, easy to prove facts, leaves you without any credibility. those who misinterpret the bible for their own hateful reasons, still forcing their beliefs on non believers, including making laws to that end. i'm just glad that their are people out there like these two parents that although have clearly struggled in their understanding but have kept their son remembering him to be part of the family and supporting him. its difficult to know that there are those that arent as forgiving/understanding in this world

I shall definitely keep this family in my prayers. They all seem like wonderful people. Unconditional love for one's gay children is certainly something that the Church teaches. As a Catholic myself, I believe that homosexuals should be treated with respect, compassion, and understanding. At the same time, we can never encourage the practice of that lifestyle, because it will keep them from coming into communion with God.

Thank you for your comment. God entrusts authority chiefly to the Church, which has always unfailingly believed that the deliberate practice of homosexuality is contrary to nature and to God's plan.
