I was lucky enough to be in my teens in the early 90s before the city tore down the remainings of the combat zone, but by then the big shops like Naked I was already gone. I had so much fun in the area...pilgrim, liberty...all those places.
now it feels like a dry town. Those luxury buildings never seem to fit into those few blocks in my opinion.
My Dad used to play in bands up and down the strip during the 60s and 70s. By the mid-70s that area was really nasty. I remember riding in the car during the daytime. We locked the doors and rolled up the windows. You could tell by the old architecture, that area might of had some class in the centuries before. I remember seeing the "liberty building" where the liberty tree once stood. I don't think "the sons of liberty" could imagine what was to come later!
the 70's was the best time I enjoyed in the combat zone,17 yrs old and was workin in an adult peep show!!Playland bar the best!! State theater! mmm good times in the balcony ;) the stuart theater had good action as well damn the good old days and it was safe!!! you just had to know where and what you was doing :)
@waitwhatwasthat No, that's actually a better part of Chinatown, down Beech Street by the gate. Great, great Taiwanese food. Those guys, I think, werent' from there (and I'm not just saying that because almost all of them looked white--they seemed to be heading back to their cars).
My first apartment was on Washington & Beach in like 86-87 a 2nd floor box over a book store. I must have watched Taxi Driver too many times, because I wanted to live there.
I was very happy to see this video! Very interesting with wonderful old footage of Boston. I am a proud resident of Chinatown (3 years and counting) and of Boston (10 years total) and I was interested to see how this neighborhood has developed. I am glad that the seedy elements have abated, but I hope the gentrification does not inflict too harshly on Chinatown.

is this the area that you have to keep a baseball bat in your car to ward off all the thugs trying to walk across your car?

I can still remember the smell of that place.

I don't think they'll stop until downtown is just one big wallgreens. Cities are better when people from the suburbs are afraid to go there.

Me and my friends used to take the T to a bar called Harry's back in the early 80's where we'd get served. We were all about 15 years old then.
I miss that place!!!

I lived in Boston in 1981 when the Combat Zone was shrinking. I used the Combat Zone of that time as the setting for a script I'm writing.

Now, in 2008, the Combat Zone has been reduced to a pair of strip clubs, and Chinatown, thankfully, continues to thrive.
