  • it's tough to say...I think the response of the masses would be so negative, they would have to immediately remedy it somehow. But for people who build their own PCs, they might actually like it if this could cause "Windows 8 Ultimate" to be less expensive, for example. But for OEM-built machines, this would most likely be a royal pain in the ass because every OEM in existence will jump on this opportunity to squeeze more money out of the average joe.

  • i think if they find an unobtrusive way, say a column 5% the screen size with still ads that change every now and then... but sound ads, that would really tick people off. going to watch a youtube video, and then missing something because of RED BULL GIVES YOU WINGS!!! that is just ridiculous.

  • Another thing aboud ads that exist today, is that they eat up the cpu power away from our real tasks, wasted power especially from computers like netbooks!

  • Piracy. I wish apple would give out free or cheap computers just for a shit load of ads in the OS. Ok, ads, lets find a version of Mac OS 10.7 on TPB, DL it, burn it, re-install.. Hey! A full mac that costs 1200 bucks for only 700! YEA! LMAO

  • the funny thing is when i was watching this the bottom of the video kept on popping up ads lol

    anyway yea sounds kinda retarded

  • Ad-ware is already kinda bundled with windows , at least if you use Live messenger anyway. i cant say this idea strikes fear into my heart but it would be a little strange its like when they said they were gona put adds in video games people went a little nuts for a while and then went and played burnout paradise and Battle field 2142 and didn't much notice. but its probably true once the adds get in no matter what's paid there will be adds :(

  • I watch your videos for your accent.

  • Just use open-source...

    No more bullshit like this.

  • If they do release any ad-supported OSes, they'd most likely be free, crippled versions. It would be absolutely absurd to include ads in a paid version.

Also, if you buy a new computer (Windows-based), most likely, it's going to have ads already on it. Granted they're not as intrusive as, say, an advertisement as your wallpaper, but they're there in the form of crapware (the programs that the OEMs install) and small apps that Microsoft includes with IE.

  • if this happens i wont upgrade to a new os windows should note with vista if people dont like it they wont buy it. this will only happen with ad supported os's its going backwards and as for googles os youd get adverts appearing while your on the internet anyway. cloud computing is a gd idea i think but it takes power and control from the consumer.

  • If they bring that in I will never buy it ... I'll move straight to linux!

  • Go ahead, you'll probably get back to the adds supported OS's soon.

  • i think you are right. i dont know if apple will force adds on us, but i could see them charging more for no adds. i deff could see windows pushing adds hard core! its just their style. i hope none of this happens, but we know money rules not public desire!

  • agh for fuck sake dave if they do this i vow to throw my 13 inch macbook pro off my roof!

  • Ill be their to catch it!! ;D

  • I think the ad-version will be completely free and there will be a version of the OS for people that don't want ads and that's going to be more expensive but we are willing to pay a bit more for it. Apple knows that. Apple knows that we like the premium, glossy stuff and that we are willing to pay for it. So Apple will win at two situations, they will be showing advertisements to consumers that don't care and get money from big companies AND they will be selling their normal OS for more money.

  • I cant see Apple Inc. doing this

  • I HATE HATE HATE advertising!! I avoid it as much as humanly possible. I mute the adds on TV, I turn off the radio when the adds come on, I don't even answer my home phone during the day because 99% of the time it's people trying to sell me shit.

I honest think if computers had advertising built in to the dam things I would do without one. I don't think my brain could take any more...I would go off line forever!!

  • Geesh,Thats horrible....God bless you...

  • you know i had this thought quite a long time ago!

well i personally wouldnt buy this because it would be so fustrating to have ads everywhere

  • corporation are greedy fuckers who are money hungry and dont give a fuck about anything else..yes were getting fucked..

  • I will never use an ad supported OS full stop no way they can shove it.

If I can pay and have no ad's what so ever then fine otherwise hell no but it's not as if we don't get bombarded on the net as it is I use no script for that very reason.

  • They're in for a shock if they think google chrome OS will be ad based... It will give u easy access to all of google's products though, alot of which are ad based, not all though...the thing about google is they can do it subtly.. alot of which are relevant and targeted, maybe even useful but certainly will become more relevant and useful as google acquires more information on u.

  • I agree with your comment about that being the day you switch to Linux. I had the exact same thought.

  • AD's make money simple as that and people like MS and apple are greedy and just look for ways to make even more money then they do already, i dont think anyone wants to have a shit load of ad's popping up on your desktop, my desktop is private too me i dont want shit just coming up while i;m working.

  • hey if it happens ill just install linux on my macbook, no ads then

  • Google doesn't care what the content is.

  • That last comment was @ johnmonk66, not a comment on this video

  • You know what will happen? Sure you can still use the os without ads, but you will be paying triple the price for it. Why is Apple starting this idea? Because it has a following that will do as it is told. If Apple does this, you will not switch to windows, will you? So why complain about something you have no control over, it is like complaining about the rain

  • Isn't youtube doing this, you think I want to look at your ads Dave? If YOU have the right to put ads on YOUR youtube page to make money, so apple has the same right.

Maybe Wozniak will return and build a new pc for us, hopefully this time he won't let Steve Jobs take the credit. How many mactards think Jobs built the first apple??? The first apple was built 100% by Wozniak

  • A website and an operating system are 2 entirely different things...

You don't have to pay to use YouTube. Dave or any other partner can use ads to make money, whereas when you buy an OS...you buy the OS and that's how the company make their money.

Using these 2 comparisons is an unfair example.

  • not unfair at all, buy an apple lately? did you pay for the os? no, it comes with it. next time you buy a mac you get the add supported version with the computer or you buy the os.

Sure you can say the price of the os is in the price of the machine, but thats up to apple. they can turn around tomorrow and simply say the os is add supported, and you can't do anything about it.'

that is how it compares, mac can say os is free and they have the right to make money with adds too.

  • Yeah, I understand and to a certain extent agree with what you're saying about what apple can do. Honestly though, the cost of Mac OS X and ILife are factored into the price of the machine, nothing comes free in this world! The software just comes pre-loaded and you've got your restore dvds etc. It's like when I bought this dell... it came with Windows Vista installed, but it's not like I scored a copy of Vista OS for free.

  • but honestly, the whole idea of add supported OS is cringe-worthy to say the least.

  • You've obviously never been to England then...all they do is complain about the rain!!

  • Oh but I have been, and to Ireland many times, even lived in Ireland for a year. But that was the point of my joke, they spend their whole life complaining about it instead of moving someplace nicer. People will use ad supported apples in the future, they will complain, but they will never move to a free os.

  • I'm not too worried about this, as i'm pretty confident there will be a third party software to block all the ad nonsense.

    I hate ads.

  • Creating my own OS :O

  • VERY interesting stuff. I might make a video response as this is the kind of stuff I love discussing on YouTube.

One thought that pops into my head is that presumably the people who are willing to forego the luxury of an ad-free desktop in order to get the OS for free will be less well off people and therefore the people least likely to purchase any of the products these companies are trying to sell. Unless they target them with cheap products like soft drinks and ring tones etc.

  • I can't see ad supported OSes in the foreseeable future. This is something that would be seen on kiosks and other public, free-to-use computers.

  • Ad supported OS is the wrong interpretation of what's happening.

Win7 supports "skins". In fact, at a Win7 demo I went to by MS themselves in Dublin Institute of Tech., they showed off an Apple skin for Win7, which was funny.

What will happen is IF YOU WANT IT, you can download a skin themed in the colors of some corporate entity.

They are already in existence, and popular. Customize and deviantART etc. are littered with themes made by people using Coca-Cola or whatever logos.

    Not the same..

  • I like operating systems with ads as an oppsion but not as an industry standerd. I feel this way for cloud computing too.

I sure hope ur wrong Dave.

  • if its that bad of a problem then just buy the OS instead of getting it for free with ads lol even then im sure someone would make a patch to block the ads

  • im fine with the ad thing

  • um..... just use windows xp its old but it dus the job

  • That will suck a lot, but I guarantee that some dev team will do something about this. Whether it be to hack up an ad-based os to take them all out or to trick the ad counters... or just take an open source os like linux and bring it up to OSX or windows standards.. with all the new interest in an ad free os, they would be no shortage of support to help out the development of such an os.

  • Use Linux. Problem solved.

  • that doesn't really work if i don't like linux though =/ lol not that i'm saying its a bad OS it has its good things but i personally don't like it lol

  • If Mac doesn't do this and Windows does, they'll get a huge sales boost. There's no reason to copy Microsoft on this.

  • Well in the UK i think its the law for the consumer to choise who they connect to. also im sure on the windows OSplenty of people would make progrmas 2 block it. not sure about the mac becse the control apple have over its products.

  • 2:17 lol

  • damn! that is bad news. isn't it internet enough for ads? why our personal OS? i also hate youtube for putting up ads after the videos. shiitttt.

  • I doubt this will happen for the simple reason that COMPANIES and the GOVERNMENT would not stand for it. Remember that those entities run computer too. Game companies would also scream bloody murder.

Remember that previous efforts (Opera) have been total disasters. I suspect that this is more likely to try and deal with the razor thin margins in the netbook market-offer a OS with commercials on that. Sad to say in THAT market this move makes sense.

  • I'll just keep on using my current version of OSX , even when it becomes extremely outdated :)

  • I'm same as you I hope that it never happones

  • great video. i agree with your opinions, 5 stars

  • I know nothing about this kind of thing so correct me someone, but doesnt this seem like a security issue as well as an annoyance? If these adds can legally infiltrate my os can't someone else as well? If the os has to be connected to the Internet for the adds to take place, it seems like anyone could just walk on in, Idk. But this add shit sucks ass.

  • Yes and also it will be a resource hog, especially if these ads are going to be flash based.

I thought id just got rid oh flash now I might not be able to escape it

    >:(

  • I see apple doing it only in a sale of non-apple hardware to counter piracy and loss of margin. It ensures the copy is paid for. MS will do it because it is heavily pirated.

  • lol ive been thinking the exact same point for ages, i totally agree !

  • You should still make a video about it....just saying haha. Two of my favorite great Apple / Tech youtubers.

  • I've just had a eureka moment.

Maybe record companies can start digitally inserting ads into the middle of songs to off-set the losses of piracy lol

Or even better they can force their artists to write songs about how much they love drinking coke and then send Coca-Cola an invoice! Oh I'm going to patent that tomorrow. How do I go about doing that?

  • lmao!!!! well music already has radio ads but I read an article on this some time back. the alternative the article had was subscription based.

  • Ha, the reasons behind this would be based in the % margin cost each mac sale makes in terms of paying for the OS. Thus part of my whole concept of licensing out OS X. Advertising eliminates the loss in revenue in the case of a pirated copy only if made mandatory or to offset hardware costs. I guess this is how OSX may be licensed out beyond apple hardware.

  • Hackers will come to the rescue, or Linux will!

  • I think I heard a version of Office 2010 is supposed to have some adware as well

  • Linux people must LOVE this news.

  • i hope not!! i will wean myself off computers for good if this happen!! 

  • Great Video!

you are totaly right about this, there is no escape from what is coming.

But as other people say, thank god for the hackers, they will save us from all ths SH*T that is coming :)

  • Dont worry the hackers have a work around for the AD powered OS.

  • I know of a Linux OS that put ads on the desktop, the number of use doped to none!

The next version had no ads, I can see linux being sold with a lot more computers !

  • Dave,

Have you ever tried yoga? Relax my friend, life is too short. Time to hit the pub for a few. We love you, Bro.

If this does happen, I will put down my mouse, and start working out! So, lets hope this never happens. Hell No!

     Excellent video.

  • Good talk. Insightful and well phrased.

  • i dont mind ads, as long as its cheap

  • They had a article about this on Maximum PC.. But there will always be a way around adverts... Like adblock for firefox :D Or maybe I'm being daft.

  • I agree with you totally. If this ever happens I am only going to use OS's that don't have this kind of add-junk involved in it.

  • Wow that's crazy
