to jrjinsa. My Teacher at TCU was a doubler in other words he actually played all the woodwinds. He was the Principle oboist of the Ft. Worth Symphony for many many years. He also was a studio muscian in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and was one of the best muscians in the area. He taught Clarinet, Bassoon, Oboe and Saxaphone. He was also the principle woodwind player for many musical theaters in this area. It is possible to all the other woodwinds and be great on the oboe to.
He is simply amazing. I played this years ago, but not like this!! I have picked up playing after 10 years and this is one of the first pieces I plan to work on. :)
I don't agree. the first movement had a refreshing tempo - when played slower it becomes easily boring. second movement wasn't too fast either. Davide Jäger is a very solid
Actually, this is supposed to be taken much slower. 120 beats to the eighth note. As a matter of fact, most musicologists, including myself, have studied the fact that metronomes were slower when this was composed. This piece would have been even slower. Of course, it's the player's option to play this slower, but it truly doesn't do the piece justice.
Actually, that's completely incorrect. Most players will actually start on other instruments, clarinet, saxophone, flute, and then switch to the oboe. Only recently have they been starting on the oboe and that is due to gimmicks of the manufacturers to make it more accessible to children. It is much easier to gain a musical knowledge and concept before the oboe, without a doubt, the most difficult Western woodwind instrument, is placed in their hands.
Those who start oboe after learning a previous woodwind tend to be more prejudiced and think, "Oh, this is hard." Those who start oboe first without prior woodwind experience may find it easier. I wasn't like "most students." I started on the oboe first which is probably why I'm sticking with it because I have nothing to fall back on. :) I have nothing to compare it to but that's not a bad thing...I'm just focused on learning it and just it.
I completely disagree. I am an oboist, went to the conservatory level on full scholarship. I learned on other woodwinds. It comes down to a matter of preference. I'm merely saying that learning how to be musical is easier on other woodwinds without the added stress of a double reed. When you transfer instruments, you only have to learn the instruments. In addition, being able to know all the instruments makes you a better candidate for jobs, especially in the theatre district.
Cool, but prove me wrong, please. I've yet to see a good oboist who can play other woodwinds. Perhaps you are are a rarity? Those I've seen who play other woodwinds are merely...hmmm...mediocre on oboe, perhaps good on sax perhaps . Let's see you in action. :) Make me eat my words! :) Why no videos on your Youtube Home page? Judging from my observations, oboists best be merely oboists. It's a beast that takes 100% dedication.
I could prove you wrong, but not over the webcam I have. It's the only thing I have to make video. Ergo, I have no videos up on my channel. Also, I'm far too busy to deal with making petty youtube videos. If you're that interested, come see me live.
Well unfortunately you are both wrong and right at the same time. Some people learn better on oboe first and some on other woodwinds first. Sadly we can never know which is which because nobody can the learn the first time twice. Even if they lose their memory, you can't be sure that their whole learning mind set hasn't changed in the occurance. And there are many people who are proficient in the five core woodwinds at a professional/conservatory level. (Saxophone, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, and Cl.)
@jrjinsa I don't know about that. I am a flautist and Piccolo player. I play oboe and I'm playing College Level music in High School orchestra. I picked up the Oboe and English horn rather quickly. And that's that I've started a year ago and made it All-city on oboe, even though I was dead last in the oboe section.
I thought the first movement was great but was disappointed by the second movement. Seems like his reed got a little sticky and he wasn't as confident...
Clearly, loofascraper hasn't heard an American oboist lately...that isn't anything like the traditional American oboe sound...It's very euro, which is sadly starting to become apparent in young oboists here in America...
Why sadly? the american oboe sound... I think it's not bad...suffers a bit in the high register... but let me tell you something: every american conductor or a musician coming to conduct or to play in Europe thinks that the european oboe-players are better... and its only because of the sound... REED actually

this is an interesting interpretation. More different and overall more likable than some other interpretations.

To onix750:
I started playing oboe. A year ago I'll also wanted to start sax, but because I was in hospital during 3 months I'll had to wait.
I've seen 'the mission' a film from the 80'
And from that moment I choose the oboe.
It's difficult starting with a double reed. But it's so magic...

i just switched from sax to oboe so believe me PLAY THE OBOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you play the oboe, you can always go to sax later. You can't do it the other way around as easily. Chose wisely. ;0)
