Well... I THINK seeing as though he's using graphite (at least I think its graphite)To do the portrait its very easy to smudge on drawing paper and damage the piece if your not careful. So he uses paper with weaker material like newsprint to cover parts he's not ready to touch to avoid damaging the piece. Hope I'm correct, if not oh well... every artist is different.
