How the fuck did tyson lose both of these fights, look at the reaction of tillman when he hears the decision in the first fight. and look at the worried ass look on emanuel stewart in the second fight decison. Tillman one both of these fights because of the style of the time and the bias associated to the Ali style which Tyson in the pro ranks proved had flaws. howard Cossell is a fucking over the hill idiot, ali was the greatest marketer of his style, so everyone copied it. fuck those judges.
@BKVisionFreePerView You're the 2nd one on here to claim Mike won the belt at 19. He was 20 when he won the WBC title from Berbick. Furthermore it was in '86, not '85.
Like I been saying--- When he actually has to box, he loses'
he is not a true boxer! he bulked up and just was a one hit wonder!
thug loser! punk!--- Points, Style' Grace, flow! he dos not have! he wanted to knock people out quick so he didn;t have to actually fight! cuz he new he would lose! When it came to points and matches, & longevity, he lost! so happy that he is done! Not a true boxer! late!
@rockytop777 He wanted to knock people out quick because he knew he would lose? Are you fucking retarded? Who the fuck boxes for 12 rounds while knowing they can end it in the 1st? Points Style and grace. Well NO he didnt have grace. He wanted to destroy, you moron. Points? he destoyed. His style? was to knock you out. You know absolutely nothing about boxing so get the fuck off of the Tyson vids spreading your bullshit about him. its amazing how ppl go out of their way for attention haha
@250honda I agree with your disagreement, but a different way to say it would be:
In his early fights, particularly the ones up to Spinks, Tyson was a brilliant boxer. He used the Cus D'Amato style of peek-a-boo, as well as moving his head after each punch was thrown. He stopped boxing after Cus and Jim Jacobs died, Robin Givens and her mother moved to get his money, and Don King reared his ugly head.
After the Spinks fight, Kevin Rooney was fired and YES, he stopped boxing.
@gflteFresh Very similar to the way i see it. People just dont understand that he was supposed to be an exciting fighter. Guys actually say he wanted to end the fights early because he would get beat in the later rounds. So stamina is the problem? Yea they would've caught on to that lol. Cus died..he had nobody to impress anymore..so he started going for the quick knockout and easy money. Heavyweight champ at 19 years old. Most people still live with their mom at 19.
venga ya eso es falsicimo tyson no dejava de darle con la zurda y despues va y gana el henry este ke falso por favor mas amañado imposible nisikiera mike se lo cree
@19greatest19 ONLY ALI WOULD WIN TYSON? KID YOU KNOW SHIT ON BOXING, STYLES MAKE FIGHTS, AND PRIME TYSON ONLY WON BUMS, HE COULD NOT KO BUMS LIKE TILLIS,GREEN,TUCKER,SMITH OR BUSTER DOUGLAS, STYLES MAKE FIGHTS, AND TYSON WOULD GIVE MANY PROBLEMS TO ALI, BUT GEORGE FOREMAN WOULD DESTROY TYSON IN 3 ROUNDS,BUT ALI BEATS FOREMAN, STYLES MAKE FIGHTS, IT IS A FACT.
ali 64-67, rocky marciano, joe frazier, joe louis, GEORGE FOREMAN, prime holyfield,, prime larry holmes would win prime tyson any day in the week. who had no heart and he did not have good chin.
@jimmynablee You're right mostly about who'd win, but Tyson did have heart and he had a GRANITE chin. He just had no fighting spirit or belief in himself. Look at the Lewis fight. Chin and heart, despite being soundly beaten.
Even though tyson doesn't seem to be at his best, great strategy displayed by tillman. He keeps the clear spirit to do what most of tyson's adversaries through his career seemed to intimidated to. Jab, and move, jab and move. May he come close just block the fight. He exploits tyson's handicap - his height. That's the only way to beat such a mean machine.
this man was a world champion at 19 years of age fuck the internet warriors who think they know about boxing, they probably throw punches like a bitch anyway
sorry to be pedantic, but Tyson was 20 when he defeated Trevor Berbick.
But I agree, there are far too many internet warriors that fantasize about boxing rather than partake.
They should shut the fuck up until they've actually done a few rounds and tasted it. Only then do you appreciate the pressures these men have to endure and how taking a hard punch can affect every part of your body. Not to mention confidence and boxing ability.
olympic trials were held in june 1984 in las vegas , D'amato and Jacobs considered the trials a mere formality , it was part of their plan to win gold and launch his pro career like ali, frazier and foreman. To everyones shock tyson lost twice to henry tillman. If you watch closely you can see mike just cant adjust to the amateur style - mike boxed like a robot and when henry started picking him off with jabs , it was like pulling out a fuse.
Does Tyson in this fight remind anyone of Buster Douglas years later? Tillman gave the blueprint on how to defeat a fighter like Tyson. Unfortunately when Tyson was in his prime there were no good stick and move heavyweights. Ali and Holmes in their primes would have beaten Tyson.
Movers tend to trouble any fighter...especially movers with a good jab. Why? because they hit and move away from danger.
For Tillman: Check out how Mike handled Tillman as a pro and that was even after he left Rooney (but was better trained compared to what he showed up against Douglas). Notice the difference on how he is fighting and the way he is fighting a "mover."
Tyson as a pro was better than Tyson the amateur. In the pro ranks, if you observe his fights, you will see a fast progression from his fist pro fight all the way to his fight with Berbick. And then a continued progression from Berbick to Spinks....and then the decline.
In the Pro ranks, they give you 10-12 rounds to break down your opponent.
Which is why Tyson brutalized the body early to take the legs away from his opponents and make them lower their hands; although most of the time it didn't matter. His boxing skills were just better as a pro and as he got older and grew in confidence and was allowed to fight instead of the point spar system they have in the amateurs.
His timing, combinations, ability to set traps, etc. all got better as he progressed as a Pro.
Ali and Holmes would still trouble him...no doubt.
Holmes still drops his left after he jabs and with Tyson's ability to throw the right and time an opponent, according to Atlas, it would have always troubled Holmes. Ali kept his hands down as well and was vulnerable to the left-hook and also could be worn down to the body to lose his legs like Chuvalo did.
Douglas: One big factor is a trained Tyson and an untrained Tyson...as well as the game-planning set by Rooney as opposed to a bunch of idiots that ran his corner/camp.
So what do you do with a now flat-footed, out of shape, one shot at a time, lack of head-movement, under-trained fighter?
Keep on your toes, jab, followed by combinations and get out behind the jab. Repeat over and over.
Also of note is the size, strength, speed and power of Douglas. Oliver McCall said Douglas hit harder than Lennox Lewis. Holyfield also noted that he was cautious of Douglas's jab because he saw him knock a man down with his powerful jab which was noted to be lethal.
Also note the difference with a trained Douglas and with a trained Douglas and an untrained Douglas that showed up against Holyfield. You must train to win.
In the end, movers will have the better chance of going the distance with Tyson, but it doesn't mean they win.
I would say Prime Ali (pre-exile) can beat him and Holmes may beat him but I might go with Atlas on this one because he gave a good enough reason as to why Tyson would always have won which was also backed according to him by Cus D'Amato who talked to Tyson about it.
Tyson's style was not suited for amateur. It is no surprise he was much moe effective as a pro. But you are talking about a continued progression from Berbick (a bum) to Spinks (a light heavyweight). Tyson never fought anyone of consequence in his prime. Tillman while a mover was not a great fighter by any stretch. Douglas was his first real test and Tyson was severely under trained, but whose fault is that? Easy to blame Don King etc, but in the end it is the fighter's responsibility.
Continued progression: It's not about who was in front of Tyson but what Tyson was capable of as he moved along. His style got better; he had more confidence with each fight; he understood what to do when instructed; his punches were sharper and more effective; etc.
Yes, the fault is with Tyson for leaving Rooney and not training, however; that doesn't take away the point that it is a bad example of how Tyson fights.
How effective was Douglas when he showed up fat against Holyfield in his very next fight or the many other fighters that do the same?
What it tells us is that a fighter must be prepared both mentally and physically to fight or he risks getting his ass kicked.
Tyson became a better fighter through training and maturity with each fight was the point. He was much more effective as an adult against Tillman as a pro...wasn't he?
Take Ali for example: his absolute best is regarded to be against fighters like Zora Folley and a past prime Cleveland Williams. We aren't looking at his opponents but how Ali looks at that point compared. How is he physically and mentally? How is he moving. What's he doing that he has improved...and so on.
Your words "more confidence with each fight" are extremely accurate. Tyson had a very fragile psyche. Any fight that Tyson was in where things did not go his way, he lost. He lacked the ability to adapt and his confidence was easily shaken.
Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis all had absolutely no fear of Tyson and he crumbled.
While Tyson had remarkable skills he did not have the heart to fight through when things got tough. He was done by age 24.
He was done by 24 because of the bad choices he made. To much sex, drinking, and not training anymore does that. The Big one was leaving Kevin Rooney. Patterson also remarked that Tyson needed "remember what got him there." Fact is, even when Tyson was going through his peak years, even when he was frustrated in fights, it was Rooney who guided him through it. That's the importance of a trainer...especially to a young Champion.
Take the fight with Tucker: Tyson was frustrated that Tucker was moving away and then holding him on the inside and wouldn't fight him the way he wanted...so Rooney instructed him to go to the body...then later he made sure Tyson jabbed more and Tyson listened and won that fight...which he out-jabbed the 6'5 agile Tucker. Without Rooney, Tyson would have just collapsed as a Pro like he did later on.
I think it is also why I separate Ali from Tyson as well. While Tyson relied heavily on Rooney and that specific training method and had to be 100% (or close to it) to fight at a high level, Ali was more his own man...his own General...and proved he could win even past his best. However, even he needed the advice and guidance from Angelo as a pro.
I agree 100%, but in the end the individual fighter is responsible for his own choices. We can't just look at a fighter's ability to punch or move etc etc, we have to look at the whole package, mentally, physically, emotionally. Tyson had incredible skills but unfortunately his mental wekaness let him down. If his mental skills were as strong as his physical skills he might have been the best ever. But we will never know.
Absolutely: The fighter in the end is responsible for his own choices. Even Tyson admitted in an interview that Cus taught him enough to keep him on the right track but he {Tyson} didn't listen in the end after he died. He does also say things would have been different if he had lived because he actually feared Cus and would do as told...but you have to be prepared to do it on your own. Rooney just thinks Cus didn't have enough time with Tyson. Tyson was quite young...I think 19???
Cus and Tyson seemed to basically make a deal: In exchange to get out of the ghetto, Cus wanted Tyson to be his legacy...to be the youngest HW Champion and to unify the titles.
Cus was basically his motivation and both Rooney and Jacobs continually used his name to motivate him. Once he unified the Titles for Cus (and himself), that was the end of "Iron Mike."
Tyson also gave a very telling interview at the post-press-conference interview after the Spinks fight where he brings up the possibility of retirement because he was fed up. Right after that, Cayton was gone, Rooney was gone...and so was his wife and his career. That was the worst choice of his career.
It was also noted in one of the documentaries {"mike tyson documentary 8 of 15" on youtube}
that Tyson wasn't "having fun anymore" without Cus and Jacobs by his side and was crying on Jerry Izenberg's shoulder over it. Fun was more important to him than money. Also a look into his psychological behavior as well as the pressures that come with being the youngest HW Champion in the World during the Media age...which Tyson also said that 20 is to young to be Champion.
One thing that I did hear that I found odd was that Jose Torres actually told him to go with Don King because King could offer him more money. That's messed up.
I do think Family life early on is big in building the Mind/Heart of a person. Tyson I think touched on this as well in his movie.
Lennox Lewis also thought that is a reason why Tyson fell off while he {Lennox} kept strong...Lewis had his mother by his side all the way through.
Matter of fact, I like what Lewis did with his career. He followed the Pete Sampras path of staying on top: DON"T GET MARRIED DURING YOUR PRIME YEARS and wait until after you retire to have kids...although I'm not quite sure when Sampras had his but it was at the tail end of his career... at least when he got married and had a kid. But remember, once Pete got married he did struggle with Tennis, but maybe that was due to his age...not sure.
Tyson was more like Agassi although Agassi was mature enough to get his career back on track after his divorce (as well not being nearly as extreme as tyson. Andre did however got remarried but it was to Steffi Graf. I guess if you are going to get married, marry someone that can support you and understand what it takes to be a Champion...like Steffi Graf.
One Champion that had it really tought was JACK JOHNSON...now that was crazy pressure.
When Holyfield was a young boy/amateur, he used to get beat by this one opponent over and over. So much did it bother him, Evander went home to his Mother and told her he wanted to "quit." She said "NO." She didn't raise a quitter. She said he had to keep fighting...so he did. He continued to lose to that same opponent until one day he finally won. He went home to his Mother and told her he had won (and he was happy about it).
@Orangewind You're right that everybody needs to be fueled by something... but we were robbed of great matchups... Lewis, Holyfield Tyson and Bowe should have fought each other at least 2wice during their careers. Holyfield only got the chance because Tyson and Bowe thought he was a lesser opponent
Holyfield was set to face Tyson even when Tyson was with Rooney and managed by Cayton. That fight fell through once King took over. Then it was back on then off after Tyson lost to Douglas. Then back on I think after Tyson beat Ruddock the second time; then off again when Tyson went to jail. Talk about obstacles...that's some crazy stuff.
I remember hearing it was Holyfield that took Bowe lightly because Holyfield used to get the better of Bowe in sparring...but Bowe got better since then.
For Lewis, he was just in a bad spot with timing. Tyson basically ended his prime with Spinks...then went to jail and was never going to be the same.
Holyfield and Bowe luckily were able to face each other in their prime but for Lewis, sadly those two were to busy beating the crap out of each other and Lewis was left out.
you think it would be, but really, for how quickly tyson aged, it really isn't much of an advantage. at age 12, he weighed 190 pounds, pure muscle. His trainer said at age 15, he looked like a 27 year old man.
Now if your talking skill wise, then yes, henry had more experience. but henry didn't have a physical advantage.
Tyson had awesomely fast combinations so maybe Cossell is a bit embarrassed now by what he said back then.
I think perhaps what he meant was that Tyson was only 5'8 so to hit Tillman he had to get close. Often, he couldn't just punch he had to move in *then* punch.
Of course, Custard Tomato taught Tyson to use this disadvantage to his advantage...
well if you look at the definition of quick and fast you will notice the difference. Being quick is associated more with explosive while being fast is more like moving at high speeds consistently...Check out the handspeed of Roy Jones, Pretty Boy Floyd, Pacman etc, that is an example of fast hands. You barely hear people say they have "quick" hands. They are close but the difference is there. Quick=Explosive Speed, Fast=Consistent Speed
dieselisme you are not knowledgeable in boxing look at tyson train he could hit a 6 punch combination in 0.6 seconds now thats quicker than roy jones and pacman young tyson was extremely quick doesn't mean he has to show it all the time lb 4 lb he was quicker than all of them
@mlotek9 He's not that quick here but it's because he can't put the punches together because he has trouble getting inside on Tillman so you don't see his hand speed.
Uhh I hope your not talking about Howard Cossell who covered boxing for over 20 years and seen more than you ever have. He saw Ali fight... thats fast.
Tyson never ran from anyone. The prison time did him in... not any man or fear of one. If he hadn't have been sent to prison after the Douglas fight he would have easily dispatched Holyfield and Lewis. Douglas was an aberation and an unlucky result given Tyson's partying and lack of respect during that time period in his career. He was renewed after that fight and the shame of the loss. Had the prison time not occurred every one would be talking about him as the best ever instead of a chump.
Tyson completely won this fight. Tillman was always a chump. I laugh at Cosell's lame explanation that it is the scoring and not aggressiveness. Seriously, count the punches that score... the winner is obvious. The decision was ludicrous. Boxing at its most corrupt even at the amateur level. Might as well be the WWE.
You stupid fuck, you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about. Go watch Lewis Tyson 1984, and learn how Tyson ran from Lewis. He ran from Holyfield for years. He ran from Foreman, he ran from Ray Mercer, he ran from anyone who could fight back. You're pathetically ignorant!
hanniballecturer you keep saying over and over mike tyson is scared of lenox lewis and evander holyfield and he ducked them. do you need me to pull up a link of some videos on youtube where mike tyson fought evander and lenox lewis ??? your really anoying and stupied. and im about ready to slap you in the camel clutch fuck you in the ass and make you humble
You have to be the stupidest fuck around. The point is that Tyson ran from Lewis until 2002, when he had no choice but to fight Lewis. Are you really so stupid as to not get this point? And he didn't fight Holyfield until he thought Holyfield was washed up. Again, are you so fucking stupid as to not get this? He ducked them until 1) he had no choice except to fight or 2) he thought (holyfield) was washed up. Man, you are one stupid fuck!
James "Buster" Douglas defeated the 23-year old, 218 pound Mike Tyson in ten rounds in Tokyo to become the new Heavyweight champion. Holyfield had been promised a title shot after this fight and he accepted, believing that Douglas would be squashed by Tyson. that is from wikipedia dot org. there you go tyson never ran from holyfeild you stupied little man hanniballecturer
Hey, moron: Tyson was supposed to fight Holyfield in 1989. He cancelled the fight due to an 'injury'. How many fights did Tyson cancel because of injuries?! Tyson ran from Holyfield for years. What you cited doesn't prove the didn't run from Holyfield, you stupid retard! You are a joke!
The commentator is howard cossell i think.towards the end of the first round he says mike tyson isn't fast "because he doesn't have the body to be fast"....WAT A KNOB!! tyson was one of fastest heavyweights eva!! i know now why ali used to tie cossell up uin knots during interviews..Because he made pathetic comments....
well to simply dismiss Tyson is just stupid. In his prime he was a great champion. Just too many distractions that big money bring to those unused to having any.
tyson sucked at boxing?? Well, holyfield, douglas and lewis were considered great when they beat him. So i guess they are champs who beat another champ who SUCKED at boxing?? :)
Yeah, good point. I can't stand to hear people say Tyson couldn't box. He was a great boxer for a short time, not just a bruiser. If he were just a puncher who relied on power alone he'd still be champ.
exactly. Nature really does have its way as cus da amato said. If tyson was both a hard hittin combination puncher and a great boxer like ali then he would truly be invincible. But nature makes sure that NO MAN is invincible. So tyson was blessed wiv power and speed but had to be constantly trained to retain his boxing. But yeah, for a while back then he was a truly great boxer and my fav. Boxin is dead now with overhyped muppets. :(
amck72 shut the fuck up you are fat the only reason u see people with missing teeth or big ears is because u are looking at your wife when u take her to england. MUG !
The only time I've really disagreed with Howard Cosell. "He's not fast. He doesn't have the body to be fast." Tyson was quick here and only got faster.
Disappointment. He knew the decision would be given to Tillman. Sad to see another one of young Tyson's dreams being broken. He really had pretty rotten luck. He grew up without parents and then his mentor Cus D'Amato and even manager Jim Jacobs died on him. And then his marriage to Robin Givens sucked. No support foundation. That's why he eventually unravelled. But he was one of the three greatest.
-Iron Mike Tyson the best ever, I don't care what any body says i don't care what Tyson's record is, I don't care what he has done, Tyson is the man! Many respects to him,
how cud tyson fight pieces of shit?how do you propose he was the heavyweight champion of the world?wouldnt that mean he had to fight champions?um?what closet do you live in
hanniballecturer tyson never ducked nobody. he fought the best through his career. he beat razor ruddock, larry holmes who once beat Muhammad Ali, he also held the ibf,wba and wbc heavy weight titles all at the same time. which means he knocked out 3 world champions to get them. he also fought opponents he knew couldnt beat like Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis mike tyson has fought 58 fights in his careeer.if you dont like tyson just say so. but mike tyson never ducked an opponent in his life
Ironsheik, Tyson ducked fighters his whole career. Please go look up Lewis Tyson 1984, and learn about how Tyson ducked Lewis in 1996. It's a fact. Period. Then go look up his history with Holyfield and learn how he ducked Holy for years (he had to pay holyfield money to avoid him). he ducked him until he thought he was washed up. You are buying into a myth. As for his beating Holmes, he beat an old, tired Larry, not prime Holmes. Holmes didn't reinvent himself until after the Tyson fight.
Ok just watched lewis tyson 1984.didnt see anything in it about tyson ducking lewis. i seen in it when tyson said he knocked lewis out in sparing.and a guy said cus d amato said they would meet again some day.far as tyson ducking lewis .he fought lewis in memphis so dont see how he ducked him if he fought him. evander was set to get a title fight at the winner of douglas vs tyson. tyson lost so he faced douglas for title instead.mike went to the pen for rape.when he got out he fought evander
You need to have an adult watch the video with you, and have them point out for you where Lewis' people clearly state that Tyson ducked Lewis in 1996. Then you need the adult to point out to you where Lewis' people clearly explain how Lewis came back to dominate Tyson in 1984. Man, you don't know how to pay attention! Next, Tyson ducked him for years and only fought him when he had no choice, that's how he ducked him. You really need to pay attention!
hanniballecturer can you cry any more over the subject. mike tyson fought lenox lewis. tell me how he ran away from lenox lewis when he fought him in the ring. dont nobody care if a friend of lenox lewis said tyson ran away. again you keep ignroing the fact tyson fought fought lenox lewis. he aint scared of him he faced him like a man in the middle of the irng and lost. all your doing is trolling trying to stir up beef and heat with your rediculous comments.
Moron, he ran from fighting him in 1996. That's the point. He only fought him in 2002 because he had no choice but to fight Lewis because Lewis has the belt. Man, you are fucking IDIOT! You must be a retard. I'm not the one crying, you moron, you are. And you can't follow a point to save your life... go and learn the facts, watch the Lewis 1984 video again, and have an adult hold your hands while watching it.
aww poor hanniballecturer poor baby. is he gonna cry and bitch cause he cant get his way. im sorry . just cause everybody doesnt agree with what you said. aww poor lil bitch
Man, you must be fat, gay and retarded. Your arguments are fucking stupid, they don't even back up your points. What a fucktard you are. Tell me, did mommy not breastfeed you enough? Or did you confuse your father's dick for your mother's tit?
Well I have 4 cousins, an aunt an uncle from England and they all drink tea and have stained teeth. When they visited us in America, they practically drank tea all the time.
And it is true that a majority of Americans are overweight.
this show how mike tyson would of lost to a better moving ali..tyson was great but ali was the greatest..tillman won becouse in the amateur its points not big shots that win fights..oh by the was i was a national champion in the amateurs
It took Lewis a long time before he perfected his craft. Frank Bruno nearly had him beat in their fight! Lewis wasn't at his best until about 1997. I don't know why Bowe dodged him. It was an absurd move on his part. He had the tools to KO Lewis, but didn't believe in himself unfortunately and threw the WBC belt in the trash like a coward.
Well, I wasn't convinced anyway, superdave198. Remember Lewis was getting rocked himself during that fight and even though I am Canadian and all, I don't think that he would have won had the fight gone to the cards. Remember, he lost to Tyrell Biggs four years earlier as well.
I`m not fat, I justr walk around in the USA watching people getting fatter and fatter. When I visit England I see people with either missing teeth, stained teeth or big eyes. And yes, we do drink tea at 12 o`click every day.
This camera man is frustratingly terrible. There are several shots to Tillman's face you don't even see because the sorry ass camera man didn't frame the shot right. LOL.
he got fucking robbed!!!!!! tyson is a vegan now and thats awesome.

ali 64-67, rocky marciano, joe frazier, joe louis, GEORGE FOREMAN, prime holyfield,, prime larry holmes would win prime tyson any day in the week. who had no heart and he did not have good chin.
jimmynablee 1 year ago
@jimmynablee You're right mostly about who'd win, but Tyson did have heart and he had a GRANITE chin. He just had no fighting spirit or belief in himself. Look at the Lewis fight. Chin and heart, despite being soundly beaten.

Even though tyson doesn't seem to be at his best, great strategy displayed by tillman. He keeps the clear spirit to do what most of tyson's adversaries through his career seemed to intimidated to. Jab, and move, jab and move. May he come close just block the fight. He exploits tyson's handicap - his height. That's the only way to beat such a mean machine.

this man was a world champion at 19 years of age fuck the internet warriors who think they know about boxing, they probably throw punches like a bitch anyway
exploreruk07 2 years ago
sorry to be pedantic, but Tyson was 20 when he defeated Trevor Berbick.
Peace...

easy win for tillman , tyson cant cut off the ring and has no footwork - lunges in , would have got slaughted by willie dewitt at the olympic games.
isafella1 2 years ago
We tend to forget that Tyson was only SEVENTEEN years old in this Tillman fight.
He was still in the learning stage, so give the guy a chance.
By the way, they fought again in 1991; first round knockout for Tyson!
themightymouth 2 years ago
olympic trials were held in june 1984 in las vegas , D'amato and Jacobs considered the trials a mere formality , it was part of their plan to win gold and launch his pro career like ali, frazier and foreman. To everyones shock tyson lost twice to henry tillman. If you watch closely you can see mike just cant adjust to the amateur style - mike boxed like a robot and when henry started picking him off with jabs , it was like pulling out a fuse.
isafella1 2 years ago

You do make some valid points , especially that Tyson's attacks lacked aggression and true purpose. He also was not moving as well as he can.
However, I do think that Tyson won both fights, especially the first, knocking Tillman down.
My opinion is not as valid as the judges, though.
Rocky Marciano's amateur career was poor also, and he remained undefeated as a pro.
By the same token, Tillmans pro career was totally eclipsed by Tyson's.
Pro success lies in the spirit of the fighter.

Midnightrambler3760 2 years ago
Movers tend to trouble any fighter...especially movers with a good jab. Why? because they hit and move away from danger.
For Tillman: Check out how Mike handled Tillman as a pro and that was even after he left Rooney (but was better trained compared to what he showed up against Douglas). Notice the difference on how he is fighting and the way he is fighting a "mover."
Orangewind 2 years ago
Tyson as a pro was better than Tyson the amateur. In the pro ranks, if you observe his fights, you will see a fast progression from his fist pro fight all the way to his fight with Berbick. And then a continued progression from Berbick to Spinks....and then the decline.
In the Pro ranks, they give you 10-12 rounds to break down your opponent.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Which is why Tyson brutalized the body early to take the legs away from his opponents and make them lower their hands; although most of the time it didn't matter. His boxing skills were just better as a pro and as he got older and grew in confidence and was allowed to fight instead of the point spar system they have in the amateurs.
His timing, combinations, ability to set traps, etc. all got better as he progressed as a Pro.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Ali and Holmes would still trouble him...no doubt.
Holmes still drops his left after he jabs and with Tyson's ability to throw the right and time an opponent, according to Atlas, it would have always troubled Holmes. Ali kept his hands down as well and was vulnerable to the left-hook and also could be worn down to the body to lose his legs like Chuvalo did.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Douglas: One big factor is a trained Tyson and an untrained Tyson...as well as the game-planning set by Rooney as opposed to a bunch of idiots that ran his corner/camp.
So what do you do with a now flat-footed, out of shape, one shot at a time, lack of head-movement, under-trained fighter?
Keep on your toes, jab, followed by combinations and get out behind the jab. Repeat over and over.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Also of note is the size, strength, speed and power of Douglas. Oliver McCall said Douglas hit harder than Lennox Lewis. Holyfield also noted that he was cautious of Douglas's jab because he saw him knock a man down with his powerful jab which was noted to be lethal.
Also note the difference with a trained Douglas and with a trained Douglas and an untrained Douglas that showed up against Holyfield. You must train to win.
Orangewind 2 years ago
In the end, movers will have the better chance of going the distance with Tyson, but it doesn't mean they win.
I would say Prime Ali (pre-exile) can beat him and Holmes may beat him but I might go with Atlas on this one because he gave a good enough reason as to why Tyson would always have won which was also backed according to him by Cus D'Amato who talked to Tyson about it.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Tyson's style was not suited for amateur. It is no surprise he was much moe effective as a pro. But you are talking about a continued progression from Berbick (a bum) to Spinks (a light heavyweight). Tyson never fought anyone of consequence in his prime. Tillman while a mover was not a great fighter by any stretch. Douglas was his first real test and Tyson was severely under trained, but whose fault is that? Easy to blame Don King etc, but in the end it is the fighter's responsibility.
Midnightrambler3760 2 years ago
Continued progression: It's not about who was in front of Tyson but what Tyson was capable of as he moved along. His style got better; he had more confidence with each fight; he understood what to do when instructed; his punches were sharper and more effective; etc.
Yes, the fault is with Tyson for leaving Rooney and not training, however; that doesn't take away the point that it is a bad example of how Tyson fights.
Orangewind 2 years ago
How effective was Douglas when he showed up fat against Holyfield in his very next fight or the many other fighters that do the same?
What it tells us is that a fighter must be prepared both mentally and physically to fight or he risks getting his ass kicked.
Tyson became a better fighter through training and maturity with each fight was the point. He was much more effective as an adult against Tillman as a pro...wasn't he?
Orangewind 2 years ago
Take Ali for example: his absolute best is regarded to be against fighters like Zora Folley and a past prime Cleveland Williams. We aren't looking at his opponents but how Ali looks at that point compared. How is he physically and mentally? How is he moving. What's he doing that he has improved...and so on.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Your words "more confidence with each fight" are extremely accurate. Tyson had a very fragile psyche. Any fight that Tyson was in where things did not go his way, he lost. He lacked the ability to adapt and his confidence was easily shaken.
Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis all had absolutely no fear of Tyson and he crumbled.
While Tyson had remarkable skills he did not have the heart to fight through when things got tough. He was done by age 24.
Midnightrambler3760 2 years ago
He was done by 24 because of the bad choices he made. To much sex, drinking, and not training anymore does that. The Big one was leaving Kevin Rooney. Patterson also remarked that Tyson needed "remember what got him there." Fact is, even when Tyson was going through his peak years, even when he was frustrated in fights, it was Rooney who guided him through it. That's the importance of a trainer...especially to a young Champion.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Take the fight with Tucker: Tyson was frustrated that Tucker was moving away and then holding him on the inside and wouldn't fight him the way he wanted...so Rooney instructed him to go to the body...then later he made sure Tyson jabbed more and Tyson listened and won that fight...which he out-jabbed the 6'5 agile Tucker. Without Rooney, Tyson would have just collapsed as a Pro like he did later on.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Rooney game-planned every move he made and prepared him both mentally and physically for a fight.
After he left, Tyson was on his own.
by the way, many fighters didn't fear Tyson and they lost. Take Razor Ruddock for example: No fear of Tyson.
Orangewind 2 years ago
I think it is also why I separate Ali from Tyson as well. While Tyson relied heavily on Rooney and that specific training method and had to be 100% (or close to it) to fight at a high level, Ali was more his own man...his own General...and proved he could win even past his best. However, even he needed the advice and guidance from Angelo as a pro.
Orangewind 2 years ago
I agree 100%, but in the end the individual fighter is responsible for his own choices. We can't just look at a fighter's ability to punch or move etc etc, we have to look at the whole package, mentally, physically, emotionally. Tyson had incredible skills but unfortunately his mental wekaness let him down. If his mental skills were as strong as his physical skills he might have been the best ever. But we will never know.
Midnightrambler3760 2 years ago
Absolutely: The fighter in the end is responsible for his own choices. Even Tyson admitted in an interview that Cus taught him enough to keep him on the right track but he {Tyson} didn't listen in the end after he died. He does also say things would have been different if he had lived because he actually feared Cus and would do as told...but you have to be prepared to do it on your own. Rooney just thinks Cus didn't have enough time with Tyson. Tyson was quite young...I think 19???
Orangewind 2 years ago
Cus and Tyson seemed to basically make a deal: In exchange to get out of the ghetto, Cus wanted Tyson to be his legacy...to be the youngest HW Champion and to unify the titles.
Cus was basically his motivation and both Rooney and Jacobs continually used his name to motivate him. Once he unified the Titles for Cus (and himself), that was the end of "Iron Mike."
Orangewind 2 years ago
Tyson also gave a very telling interview at the post-press-conference interview after the Spinks fight where he brings up the possibility of retirement because he was fed up. Right after that, Cayton was gone, Rooney was gone...and so was his wife and his career. That was the worst choice of his career.
Orangewind 2 years ago
It was also noted in one of the documentaries {"mike tyson documentary 8 of 15" on youtube}
that Tyson wasn't "having fun anymore" without Cus and Jacobs by his side and was crying on Jerry Izenberg's shoulder over it. Fun was more important to him than money. Also a look into his psychological behavior as well as the pressures that come with being the youngest HW Champion in the World during the Media age...which Tyson also said that 20 is to young to be Champion.
Orangewind 2 years ago
One thing that I did hear that I found odd was that Jose Torres actually told him to go with Don King because King could offer him more money. That's messed up.
I do think Family life early on is big in building the Mind/Heart of a person. Tyson I think touched on this as well in his movie.
Lennox Lewis also thought that is a reason why Tyson fell off while he {Lennox} kept strong...Lewis had his mother by his side all the way through.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Matter of fact, I like what Lewis did with his career. He followed the Pete Sampras path of staying on top: DON"T GET MARRIED DURING YOUR PRIME YEARS and wait until after you retire to have kids...although I'm not quite sure when Sampras had his but it was at the tail end of his career... at least when he got married and had a kid. But remember, once Pete got married he did struggle with Tennis, but maybe that was due to his age...not sure.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Tyson was more like Agassi although Agassi was mature enough to get his career back on track after his divorce (as well not being nearly as extreme as tyson. Andre did however got remarried but it was to Steffi Graf. I guess if you are going to get married, marry someone that can support you and understand what it takes to be a Champion...like Steffi Graf.
One Champion that had it really tought was JACK JOHNSON...now that was crazy pressure.
Orangewind 2 years ago
Building the Mind/Heart...Holyfield Story:
When Holyfield was a young boy/amateur, he used to get beat by this one opponent over and over. So much did it bother him, Evander went home to his Mother and told her he wanted to "quit." She said "NO." She didn't raise a quitter. She said he had to keep fighting...so he did. He continued to lose to that same opponent until one day he finally won. He went home to his Mother and told her he had won (and he was happy about it).
Orangewind 2 years ago
That's when she told him "Now you can quit." But Holyfield didn't want to quit now. He had just won and continued on.
I think she knew what she was doing :)
That's building a child's mind/heart/confidence.
That's what a parent is supposed to do.
Holyfield would also use religion as a tool to keep his "heart/mind" strong.
Tyson was using Cus's memory until he accomplished his goal.
Orangewind 2 years ago
He should have continued on to the final goal of being the best and retiring with a better record than Rocky Marciano's 49-0.
One of the best things to happen to Lennox Lewis was actually being pushed aside for so long because that kept him hungry to prove himself.
Everybody at that level is fueled by something. The key is to continue to keep that fire/fuel at a peak.
Orangewind 2 years ago
@Orangewind You're right that everybody needs to be fueled by something... but we were robbed of great matchups... Lewis, Holyfield Tyson and Bowe should have fought each other at least 2wice during their careers. Holyfield only got the chance because Tyson and Bowe thought he was a lesser opponent
bsheakh 2 years ago
I thought this is how it went down:
Holyfield was set to face Tyson even when Tyson was with Rooney and managed by Cayton. That fight fell through once King took over. Then it was back on then off after Tyson lost to Douglas. Then back on I think after Tyson beat Ruddock the second time; then off again when Tyson went to jail. Talk about obstacles...that's some crazy stuff.
Orangewind 2 years ago
I remember hearing it was Holyfield that took Bowe lightly because Holyfield used to get the better of Bowe in sparring...but Bowe got better since then.
Orangewind 2 years ago
For Lewis, he was just in a bad spot with timing. Tyson basically ended his prime with Spinks...then went to jail and was never going to be the same.
Holyfield and Bowe luckily were able to face each other in their prime but for Lewis, sadly those two were to busy beating the crap out of each other and Lewis was left out.

PengPengBoateng 3 years ago 24
you think it would be, but really, for how quickly tyson aged, it really isn't much of an advantage. at age 12, he weighed 190 pounds, pure muscle. His trainer said at age 15, he looked like a 27 year old man.
Now if your talking skill wise, then yes, henry had more experience. but henry didn't have a physical advantage.

DIESELisME 3 years ago
Nah there the same.
Tyson had awesomely fast combinations so maybe Cossell is a bit embarrassed now by what he said back then.
I think perhaps what he meant was that Tyson was only 5'8 so to hit Tillman he had to get close. Often, he couldn't just punch he had to move in *then* punch.
Of course, Custard Tomato taught Tyson to use this disadvantage to his advantage...

wat do u mean he wasn fast
homeworksuks 3 years ago
dieselisme, please explain the difference between the two in relation to boxing.
rabsy0 3 years ago 2
well if you look at the definition of quick and fast you will notice the difference.
DIESELisME 3 years ago 2
dieselisme you are not knowledgeable in boxing look at tyson train he could hit a 6 punch combination in 0.6 seconds now thats quicker than roy jones and pacman young tyson was extremely quick doesn't mean he has to show it all the time lb 4 lb he was quicker than all of them

Had the prison time not occurred every one would be talking about him as the best ever instead of a chump.
satrma 3 years ago 4
Tyson completely won this fight. Tillman was always a chump. I laugh at Cosell's lame explanation that it is the scoring and not aggressiveness. Seriously, count the punches that score... the winner is obvious. The decision was ludicrous. Boxing at its most corrupt even at the amateur level. Might as well be the WWE.

ironsheik7 3 years ago
Ironsheik, Tyson ducked fighters his whole career. Please go look up Lewis Tyson 1984, and learn about how Tyson ducked Lewis in 1996. It's a fact. Period. Then go look up his history with Holyfield and learn how he ducked Holy for years (he had to pay holyfield money to avoid him). he ducked him until he thought he was washed up. You are buying into a myth. As for his beating Holmes, he beat an old, tired Larry, not prime Holmes. Holmes didn't reinvent himself until after the Tyson fight.

Well I have 4 cousins, an aunt an uncle from England and they all drink tea and have stained teeth. When they visited us in America, they practically drank tea all the time.
And it is true that a majority of Americans are overweight.

Tyson did a lot better in this fight than in the first fight but Tillman's excellent jab and movement wins again.

Man, Tillman had no head gear to protect his head against Tyson's blows in their Pro fight.

What a load of CRAP. Mike won this fight. Nuff said!

This camera man is frustratingly terrible. There are several shots to Tillman's face you don't even see because the sorry ass camera man didn't frame the shot right. LOL.
