I just had a revelation about Hell, HOW Flash would be an idiot to fight the devil or supernatural powers. The devil would enjoy himself, from watching his minions get beaten, to personally fighting FLASH and tricking him into using supernatural tactics[to pretend he's getting hurt], because all it does is waste his time, instead of realizing how powerful his voice is.

Considering that Flash Gordon was made (1934) before Superman (1938 but he didnt really "fly" until 1940), I guess the writer in that time didn't thought much about superhuman abilities. But I think thats the charm of Flash in that he is a "human" who fight against aliens that are out of this world with his human ability. Well Queen's song really do sum up about Flash Gordon being "one of us".

This movie knew exactly when it needed to be good and when it shouldn't be. I later read some of the old comics and was surprised to see how awfully bland Prince Barin and Princess Aura were. They were a couple from the start, banned from Ming's court, and basically there just to provide Flash with a safe place to hang out between adventures. Dalton's jealous swashbuckler and Muti's manipulative vamp, and their not entirely healthy relationship, were HUGE improvements on the original material.

Its a poor mans Star Wars rip off? No it isnt, how can you even compare it to Star Wars. Watch the original Flash Gordan serial from the 30s and then maybe you will fully understand the intent of this movie. Special effects were plenty advanced at the time of this film, everything was diliberate in this movie including the cheesy special effects.

I saw this movie 2 or 3 times at the old Orleans 4 in Philly back in 1980 as an 8 year old kid. It's a poor man's Star Wars rip-off, but the campy, over-the-top nature of it still makes it memorable. Queen's score is what saved the movie from becoming total horse manure.
