@ColemansU2B slightly like a sharp or flat down a note but thats it , this is an amazing thing to do I find it really improved my playing , i usually sell scalloped necks on craigslist for 100$ but I do a way better job than this kid.
@Jacksonguitars1231 If you find a guy who'll do it for $50 you'd better run! Most decent shops charge between $175 and $200 for the scallop, not including a setup. I've been a guitarist and guitar tech for longer than I care to remember, and honestly, if you have some decent woodworking skills, it's not a hard thing to do. Just take your time, and don't make your first attempt on your favorite, or most expensive guitar!
@GabeMacDonnell your an idiot it wouldnt cost that much. 1, because im going to school to become a luither at Mi so get over yourself, yes its a simple thing to do which is why it wouldnt cost 200 dollars. maybe 100. i had my custom jackson rr24 done, 80 bucks. and for 2, my grandfather is a luither and any good one wont overcharge you like a 'decent' shop. my frets are perfect because i got it done good, do you see how shitty and not flush his look...
@Jacksonguitars1231 Wow, what credentials! Color me impressed. DC Customs is considered one of the best at scallops in the country; they charge $180-225, not including a setup. Each fret takes about 10 minutes minimum, multiply that by the hourly cost and figure it out.
@GabeMacDonnell ahh i see, i apologize sir. I am talking about the last 4 to 6 frets which is what i have done and have had done, i apologize we misinterperated each other. i only scallop the last few because it makes it easier for solos and bends and such. sorry to get off on the wrong foot eh? check out my two new guitars, i have videos of them (: cheers subscribe if you want
@numstuck You're right! McLaughlin, Blackmore, Malmsteem and Montfort are just dummies. Vai too, but only 1/8th, since he only has 4 scalloped frets. (Sarcasm, of course.)
@numstuck Apparently the first jobs on Blackmore and Malmsteems guitars were not shining examples of luthiery. I'm not saying this is the best method to scallop a neck, but anyone with some patience, common sense, and a few hand tools could scallop a neck if they wanted. Wouldn't try it 1st time out on a nice guitar, especially if you're not good with woodworking, but it's not a difficult job, just time consuming. Replacing a scalloped brace on an acoustic: see your repairman!
Heyyy!!! I didn't know I was on the video response! Someone just left a comment on my video telling me...
Thanks guys!
BTW, DON'T use a round file like you're using because when you get to the first frets, there's no way to make them simmetrically round. That type of round file only works for the last 4 or 6 frets that are so close together that the file perfectly fits in between the metal frets, producing a perfect scallop.
I scalloped my first guitar that had by that time turned into what I called a "Mutt" because the only thing left original on it was the body. That was about 1990-91 I used sandpaper wrapped around different sized pencils, markers etc....Turned out really good and I ended up doing a few for other players in town.
Once you go scalloped you never want to go back. Now, every un-scalloped guitar I pick up I feel has something wrong with it. It's weird ... I was oblivious to the freedom these frets bring, until now! Also, I must have a way of playing which only shared by a minority group of guitarists, i.e. delicate/light navigation of strings; I'm thinking "how absurdly hard must other guys be pressing for scalloped frets to feel weird or unnatural to them??!".
he clearly hasn't done a ton of them, he got the tape right and even the sanding but all in all he did way too much wood. I did learn from this video and as of now have done 6 guitar necks.
if its your own guitar it can be as inconsistant and as much wood taken as we want. just dont go through the entire inlay and dont go through the ENTIRE fretboard ... otherwise you're fucked.
@metalguitarguy95 yeah if you be really careful , i did them on a few necks myself , you'll get some dust from them in with the wood shavings or whatever you want to call it.. but you know the dots going up the side of the neck in the playing position? yeah as long as you dont go through those you're fine... remember take as LITTLE wood as you possibly can, its like a credit card amount you need gone.
@frenchfriedfrenchmen Dude the sound is produced when the strings touch the fretwire so its impossible for the guitar to stop playing because of the scallop. So either you are lying or you made additional adjustments to the instrument. And second nobody in his right mind would do such a thing to a custom shop instrument. So either you are a liar or crazy.Either way its not the scalloping to blame.
the step up from 180 grit to 1000 grit is huge...180 to 400..then 600 ..then 1000... also, you could just wrap the sandpaper around your file or wooden dowel to sand it a little more evenly....but what do i know? i paid a luthier to scallop my neck/
The best advice this kid has is when he writes "For a more professional look check the video response. " I'm waiting for his next video called " How to build an acoustic guitar out of Brazilian Rosewood using only a screwdriver and a butter knife ."
Never ever scallop a fretboard in this manner, I have done all my own scalloping on my guitars, all I use is different grades of sandpaper, fingers, dowels, and a shit load of patience. And I swear he was gonna slice into his arm with the knife when he was trimming the masking tape. Utter madness
What the hell is with all you people ranting on about how this is just a quick way to destroy a guitar and now the guy has to go buy a new neck? Ever heard of Yngwie Malmsteen? People do play on scalloped necks. Makes the feel much slippery, like playing on ice. Makes bends much easier and makes them feel much nicer too.
@M1thotyn THEY ARE SAYING DONT DO IT THE WAY THIS KID DID IT. HE WENT WAY TO DEEP AND IT LOOKS LIKE SHIT!ALL IT IS GOOD FOR IS IS YOU PLAY NOTHING BUT LEADS AND SOLOS IF YOU HAVE TO PLAY A RYTHYM TRACK IT SUCKS.
@M1thotyn dude that is not a scalloped neck, that is a mutilated neck. If you want a scalloped neck you have a luthier do the work for you, this video is painfull to watch if you know anything about guitars.
@deicidalmaniac If the finger doesn't touch the fretboard when fingering, it's a properly scalloped board. That's all that matters. And I do know a lot about guitars, I've been playing for 19 years. You will get no difference in tone or playability if they are all scalloped exactly as deep, or exactly as smooth, or sanded like this or that. The fingers don't touch the fretboard = success.
Two problems. 1. the masking tape gets filed off anyway and you end up scratching the fret anyway. 2. you scalloped the fret way too deeply. There is no need to go that deep.
Okay, three problems. You never EVER want to work on a guitar neck with the neck held in your hands. There is no stability and the results will show that. MUCH better to leave the neck on for this job. There is no need to remove it and leaning the guitar on a stable source would prove much better.
ive got a ten speed lifted off the ground and the back wheel wraped in 80grit my friends take turns pedalin while i use the 10 speed wheel with sand paper wrapped on it 2 do mine it works faster
Oh damn i just watched the rest of the video, holy fark man that made me shiver.............. whats with the big ass block sander. crazy as. fuck this shit
I have several scalloped necks that I did myself. I also used sandpaper, but NOT METAL FILES. I used various grades of sandpaper and various diameter dowels. I even used rolls of quarters, nickels and dimes wrapped in sandpaper, but NOT FILES. I am a perfectionist and I somehow managed not to saw the neck in half... dude, that was freakin' brutal!!! Please seriously consider removing this post for the sake of guitar lovers everywhere: NO ONE SHOULD EVER DO THIS TO A GUITAR.
@MrMusicman1969 I like that ideal of using various diameter dowels wrapped in sandpaper. I just pictured the dowels with limiters on either side riding the radius of the freboard using the frets as guides. Crazy eh? Not everybody can afford a cnc machine to get the radius exact. Of course a rasp file works only in skilled hands just to get down a bit but not as depicted in this video of course. I would never scallop my guitars but being an aspiring luthier I might get that request one day,.
No. You should NEVER do this. This is NOT the right way. This will ruin your neck and steal tone b/c it removes wood from your neck. I worked with Yngwie's personal Luthier @ his shop where he did Yngwie's scallops exclusively. The ONLY right way to do it involves complex machinery, lots of refinishing, refretting, and tempering and there is NO LOSS of wood. Though, doing it like in the vid can get a 'scallop' effect, I STRONGLY recommend you NOT do this. Not bashing the dude, but not right.
once you actually start filing, make a very nice clean starting point in the center of the fret. don't start hacking away, you'll wont be making uniform, even scallops
I would never do this on my own just because I'd be afraid I could mess it up (u did, sorry.). the fretboard urgently needs to rest on something hard, you can't just hold it in your hands and start changing it. I totally agree with brossej07, you should really call a professional.
Pathetic. It's not even scalloped to the bottom edge of the frets! Terrible. Absolutely terrible.
A TIP TO ANYBODY WHO WANTS A SCALLOPED NECK:
FIND A PROFESSIONAL! or, get a warmoth neck. but at the very least FIND A PROFESSIONAL!!! Then it'll be done right, and not f**ked up like this dumbass's neck.
it fuckin hurts......its like going to a mad dentist with old tools watching this...and I think its band-aids he should be using instead of tape for his frets. yowza
@Mikeskiboshskiisme Quit commenting on everything you see faggot. Any razor, from anything, will cut your wrists, you're just too bible deep in retardation to care that no one likes you. Not even your mom. So, shut the fuck up.
@DAKMAIN wow, I've heard more emotionally damaging insults on the back of cereal boxes. Plus, I was just making a joke, no need to get all "snooty." No need to impose your undentable ego over the realms of youTube via comment.
@Mikeskiboshskiisme Why don't you take your pretentious bullshit to a live show and just stand there looking jazzy. Shut the fuck up and go linger elsewhere. Search MIT and argue their physics, you'd probably excel in that area..
Wow. Thats HAGGARD. ive done several scallop jobs on high end guitars. Even my first attempt came out better. I find using a dremel on the bigger frets to remove the bulk, and doing the detail shaping with a file works best. But you gotta have a good workspace, and actually pay attention to what you are doing. Its a good thing he demonstrated this on the 13th fret, cus on the 12th there would be no inlays left.
You're lucky you didn't cut your wrist doing this. Have you ever heard of a vice? Or any sort of clamping device? Free hand exacto cutting = horrible idea!
my guitar teacher is amazing and he did this to his guitar but it was a professional job and took him days. I feel bad for people who actually try to do it following this video lol

if you want a scalloped fretboard, just buy another neck, because after you fucked it up by watching this video, you're gonna have to anyway.

Who cuts tape with an exacto knife? You know that knife is for your wrists captain emo jagggooff...
DAKMAIN 1 year ago
@DAKMAIN actually you use the razors inside the crappy disposable Bic razors.
Mikeskiboshskiisme 1 year ago
@Mikeskiboshskiisme Quit commenting on everything you see faggot. Any razor, from anything, will cut your wrists, you're just too bible deep in retardation to care that no one likes you. Not even your mom. So, shut the fuck up.
DAKMAIN 1 year ago
@DAKMAIN wow, I've heard more emotionally damaging insults on the back of cereal boxes. Plus, I was just making a joke, no need to get all "snooty." No need to impose your undentable ego over the realms of youTube via comment.
Manners, sir.
Mikeskiboshskiisme 1 year ago
@Mikeskiboshskiisme Why don't you take your pretentious bullshit to a live show and just stand there looking jazzy. Shut the fuck up and go linger elsewhere. Search MIT and argue their physics, you'd probably excel in that area..
DAKMAIN 1 year ago
@DAKMAIN okay, thanks sir.
Good luck in your future.

Free hand exacto cutting = horrible idea!
keckelma 1 year ago
You saved a lot of money. Huh?

I was sort of watching it and wondering "why are all these people freaking out? It seems to be coming out okay"
Then he removed the tape and really started showing off how bad the damage was.
WOW.

How the hell did you expected this to become good if you are working while standing? I mean, what the fuck is this?
Moreover, you do it much to fast and there was a lot that, at least me wouldn't do that way.

Who cares about the knife look at the fret board!
I lost a little bit more hope in humanity after watching this video. I wouldn't let you within 1000 feet of any of my guitars.

that is how to ruin your frets, what a douche
bdthree1 1 year ago
There's nothing "ruined" about the neck. Scalloping a neck can actually change the playability up a bit, it doesn't destroy the neck.
