People don't realise (mainly Christians, but some Atheists also don't) that when the Declaration of Independence, there was no model of the universe that made sense without a creator. It's why people like Thomas Jefferson were Deists, as they discounted the divine myths and doctrines of Theism, but were unable to shake off the burden of the origins of life. Post Darwin, the Godless model was now complete, and Deism was now complete, however the USA was founded on secular values, not Christian.
