These things are a pain to repair on your own, like most devices these days. And technology is so relatively inexpensive, that by the time you pay the repair person, you could purchase a new TV. But, what the heck, ask the repair place for quote first, just to be sure.
I have a 42inch television that has a scratch on the screen. I want to take it apart and see if I can replace it myself. Think I have a chance? It's and LCD
how easy/ difficult is it to replace a broken plasma screen? is it similar to replacing a lcd screen ie just remove inverters and ribbon cable and change, or is it more complex?
how easy/ difficult is it to replace a broken plasma screen? is it similar to replacing a lcd screen ie just remove inverters and ribbon cable and change, or is it more complex?
i would take it apart, and not trash it, unsolder all the useful components (speakers, transformers, capacitors, resistors, inductors, relays, diodes, etc) for future use
all a tv actually does is shows 3 different colors like your computer red green and blue and your eyes can make that into a picture so thats what a tv does.
you have to somehow remove the front plastic cover and reposition the buttons.
Just be careful with any metal parts or wires, and don't remove the back as the components can hold a significant charge and you can get electrocuted.
I was given this exact same model by my neighbour - it would'nt power on and the repair quote was $1500. But two beers and a three caps in the standby supply later and its up and running. Amazing picture - kicks ass on my shitty little LCD.
@srkh28 I have a TV whos power supply was dead but it was an external supply (power Brick) and the TV itself was perfectly good it just wanted power so I took this XBOX 360 power brick I had lying around (I dont own an xbox 360 BTW) and I wired it to the original cord that was on the original brick that was bad and Plugged everything in and she fired right up. I plan to use this TV for gaming.
Nowhere when the TV isn't powered. Plasma is a state of matter that occurs when a gas is ionized, in other words when it has electricity flowing through it.
The gas inside the TV is either xenon, neon, or helium or a mixture of two or all three. Same stuff found inside "neon" signs, and also they are completely inert (harmless) gases.
My 42" panasonic viera has a line running down the viewing picture, what causes this and is there a quick fix, I've heard its a common fault!!! if i'd known that i'd have kept the money and spent it on a shitty CRT at least you got your moneys worth.
This is not true anymore. LCD's and Plasma displays now have roughly the same life expectancy and reliability. The differences are subjective, but they're both good in their own ways. Make sure to research it a little more if you decide to buy one. The results will probably surprise you.
i see that every day cuz my dad owns a tv electronics shop and he fixes all sorts of things like plasmas and lcds and picture tubes and other stuff oh ya and by the way, use a makita
sorry dude, you can fix anything BUT the panel. Panel will cost you more than the TV is worth and the teardown procedure is ridiculous! Better off finding a tv with something wrong with it (ie weird artifacts, doesnt turn on etc etc) and swapping the parts from yours
@battlecitys It's called a plasma tv cause it works in the electrical plasma effect. Its just a pair of glass substraights with a phosphore coating filled with a rare noble gas.
@battlecitys I think plasma tv's make there own plasma or the plasma is the glass i forget. LOL! what did you expect a bunch of green glowing stuff like in the movies.
i have a phillips plasma tv and it looks EXACTLY like this inside,it powers up and then clicks into safe mode with the vscan error,if i detach the y-main board it stays on but with no picture, what is at fault and is it an easy fix?
id like to take one of these apart and keep the audio amp, speakers, and power supply and anything else useful. BTW what did you do with all the parts you took out of this set like the circuit boards?
There's not much in them that's useful, actually. Mostly integrated to the other components. After I took this apart, I basically trashed the whole thing. I'd seen what I needed to see, but took a series of closeup photographs for archives purposes.
well thats whats wrong with this world, remember the days when a part pf something broke and you replace it and your device works again, not today with all this china made crap. Actually, it is because people lack skills to repair these things at component level. Fortunately, most failures are the power supply and VERY EASY to repair.
The board in the TV is listed as $800.00 replacement part. Not worth it.
However, replacing the actual parts that failed (four capacitors) on that $800 board is under $2.00
Two of Digikey part numer P13117 (about 65 cents each) repair many Plasma sets. Would have the one in this video as very common PSU board.
that is a lot of transformers...

DOH! The power supply had two blown caps (very popular drive board). Can actually see one that had vented.
That TV could have been repaired for $2.00 in parts! :(

Aren't plasma tvs almost obsolete? I mean, almost nobody buys them anymore because they're so unreliable in comparison to the LCD and DLP tvs.
