Something tells me that you did not spend much quality time with your grand parents.
Use thiner paper (news paper works great), much larger cone, ballance the cone so to have very little weight in the needle & needle on a angle to the record so that it rides the croves not digg in to them. You will be amazed at the quality of sound.
Damage to the record controled by size and angle of needle, quality of sound/ thickness of paper. valum is size of cone. Do it again and make a lot better video.
OH YEH; If you want to do totaly without electricity. wind a string around the base, tie it to a small weight and let the weight fall to the floor. the more weight , the faster it turns. adjust the weight untill you get the speed right.
