She was the diva, then came Mariah. But then her problems began to overshadow all the things we loved about her, in addition to her losing her wonderful range and resonance. Because amidst the drug use and scandals and the Bobby and Whitney show we forgot how great she was. Her death has reminded us of who she was before the downward spiral, an untouchable force to be reckoned with. Beyonce sang her butt off. Perhaps we're all feeling a bit sentimental and because of that we can't objectively say whether anyone's rendition of the anthem trumps Whitney's, but I must say Whitney's just gives one chills; the arrangement, the execution it just makes one proud to be an American. I don't know of any renditions that can do that but maybe we should take a look at other users' comments before Whitney's unfortunate death to see if they still believe she holds the definitive version.

@NiColeCinNamOn no both Whitney and Beyonce performed in the exact same key. The timber of their voices are different,is why you probably thought one was lower. It is Mariah who sang in a lower key. If you played an instrument along with each rendition, you'll see what I mean.

Whitney's was the legendary rendition of the song and it was incredible, but that doesn't take away from the fact that others have done a spectacular job as well. Whitney, Mariah , and Beyonce all sang the song with amazing talent, power, and soul. Not everything has to be made in to a comparison.

Both Beyonce and Whitney have an outrageously impressive range. I like that Whitney sang it with more natural joy. At the end, Beyonce was looking a little too cool. I loved Whitney's ease and joy while singing this difficult song.

course, she was a kid. ( if she redid Second Nature, like she redid Dangerously in Love, WOW). B is a powerhouse singer. lighter and and higher in pitch . JHud hits the same notes as B a la Dream Girls, but J is thicker and soulful. B is more pop, and adds too many runs for pop to appreciate. In gospel, she could tear it up! Perhaps we're all feeling a bit sentimental and because of that we can't objectively say whether anyone's rendition of the anthem trumps Whitney's, but I must say Whitney's just gives one chills; the arrangement, the execution it just makes one proud to be an American. Great voice. However after Whitney's rendition there's no point in anyone even singing it live anymore. They need to just chime in Whitney's rendition over the speakers and be done with it.

@RomanRoyale THANK YOU. FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT. In case, y'all didn't know, Whitney Houston was one of Beyonce's greatest influences. So YES they might sound similar. And YES Whitney might have more years on her career than Beyonce. But can we just all agree that they are both amazing and talented women? Whitney is probably frowning on this argument from Heaven :( Just let her legacy live on in a non violent way.

To be honest and with respect to Whitney, Beyonce's technique during this song is why her version is better. Beyonce AND Whitney can both undoubtedly have the best anthem version in their own right. One is simple(houston) one is skillful (knowles)

Both Beyonce and Whitney have an outrageously impressive range. I like that Whitney sang it with more natural joy. At the end, Beyonce was looking a little too cool. I loved Whitney's ease and joy while singing this difficult song.
