  • I think I find his emotions a little too restrained. In the book Dorian seems to be fairly dramatic, this one... mutters a lot.

  • He is by far THE most handsom Dorian Gray. I love this story. I think this is the best version made. I remember seeing it when I was young and even now I find myself being totally drawn in to this movie.

  • just got done watching this movie in one of my classes at school...

so ridiculously creepy, amazingly, scary, brilliant. one of the best movies Ive ever seen.

btw one person has their sins reflected on a painting in their attic

  • this is just a terrific scene - The acting-mood- dialogue are supreme .. Thanks for the great clip from the golden age of Hollywood! This is a great movie and a great story!!

  • @roselandalvin Agreed!! I don't know much of anything about George Saunders (Lord Wooten), but he completely "NAILS" the role. 'Nuff said.

  • I really need to find a copy (if it exists) of David Susskind's production of the made-for-television film, THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (1961), which features special effects makeup by Dick Smith. Does anyone know if this exists?

  • I haven't seen this movie in about 37 years. My Mother loved this movie, and I've referred to it many times over my life because people always tell me that I haven't changed a bit, and I say it's because of this picture I have. LOL If you haven't seen this movie, it's really something to see. I'm going to look for the entire movie here on YT. One things for sure. I've always remembered the ending of the movie. It's pretty unique. Thanks for posting.

  • Btw: they put color in Wizard of Oz too. It was possible; just expensive at the time.

  • As well as "Life Boat" by Hitchcock and "And then there were none". all great little known gems.

  • Yes a great movie that many have not seen. Try also the movie "she" with Randolph Scott as well as

  • One of the greatest movies ever made. One of many.

  • the portrait , according to Albright , was far the better. Not quite the startled old man

that looked out on you, texturally beautiful but nightmarish at the same time.

It only lacked some lineage with the younger Dorian. Will we ever know what he got up to in Bluegate Fields ??

  • how did they put colour into the black and white movie? wonderful movie

  • I think that I like this film just to hear George Sanders witticisms!

  • I LOVE this movie! There's something beautiful about it--something I've failed to see in the other films.

  • George Sanders Not the star in many movies, but he saved many movies ,this being one of them.

  • I find Lord Henry to be contradictory in his statements. He claims youth is the only thing worth having. What about fame, money, property and titles? He might disdain those things. But I should think he'd be very sorry to lose them. He states women want to make romance last forever and another time states that women are practical. Romance is rarely practical and the practical is almost never romantic. Poor Dorian IS young; that's why he's so easily duped.

  • Thought I recognized Lord Henry's voice. It's George Sanders, who did the voice of Sher Kahn in Disney's Jungle Book.

  • Ah! Just finished watching. This is the best rendition of the novel by far! although I agree Dorian here comes across little too indifferent and unwavered. Yet it would be unfair to come to conclusions watching just 6;30 minutes from the whole film.

  • I agree that little girl took me too by surprise but she gave me this warm feeling anyway. She makes it all more humane or more realistc I suppose. This kind of empathy that I never felt reading the book towards the characters ; specially Harry and Dorian.

  • why does the girl have an american accent? and yeah where does she turn up in the book!

  • This is really one of the best if not the very best version of the original story. Most versions miss the thought and ideas that are the basis of the story and get sidetracked by doing the 'Hollywood` thing.

  • the last 2009 version is terribly hideous, I can´t stan the way they changed the original plot... do they think they can do better than Mr. Wilde? don´t think so.

  • @boopdeedeedoo

I think it would have been better without the casting of Ben Barnes. He looks the part true, but the movie is about a tortured soul. Not teen angst.

  • @boopdeedeedoo this version changes the original plot as well.

  • yeah, its seems they make him infinately evil, in the book, particularly at the end , you see his compassionate side, and know that he is willing to change. dorian is a good person at heart, but he cant escape the corruption of lord henry and his own vanity.

  • Exactly thats my theory too. It's so easy to get corrupted but once you do it's immensely hard to go back and start life afresh no matter how hard you would want to. In life there's only going forward. No back. A person dropped in to an empty well can keep swearing to himself that he'd never be so careless so as to fall again but that remorse itself would do nothing to get him out. He has to try that uphill climb so hard and get himself out & that's where a lot of people fail I think.

  • James Vale never seems to age either.

  • Why does Dorian have an American accent?

  • Best representation of the text that I have seen

  • great characters, ... awesome show

  • I do not agree with many of the theories wilde brainwashes dorian with. but wilde had expressed the danger of the asthetic influence in dorian's influencial ruin.

    ah, great talent.

  • an great film,

    a superb novel.

although, dorian in the film has a more conniving and indifferent personality,& in the novel he is more emotional. i read the portrait had been bought and given to hurd hatfield by a friend,i'd love to see it. wilde's genius as been very much underrated and misunderstood though. many flaw him for his raw boldness, but it was all his personal diary really. sanders is has the best monologues, but then, lord henry wotton IS the best character in the novel, although,

  • One of my favourite films:)

  • the little girl isn't in the book!

  • Best scene in the film. Saunders monologue is brilliant. Thanks for uploading!

  • Dorian was gorgeous.

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! is there a way you could upload the part where Dorian plays the piano for the Sibyl Vane (Angela Lansbury)? if not, it's okay. i appreciate this enough as it is! =)

  • This was Sanders movie all the way

  • IAWTC.

  • The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn.

  • Thank you for uploading this. One of my favourite novels, even though I think the film doesn't even touch the feeling I get from reading the book. It's Too American, in some sense
