Not that bad a production, considering the budget. And it might have been more widely accepted if not for Heston and the '59 version. But it brings to mind what I heard a movie critic once say: "If they're going to do re-makes, they should re-make bad movies, not good ones."

@lorrainewands Yes this version was way different and not necessarily in the best way. Seemed like the wanted to soften Messala's character in part.

How close is the Wyler version to the book? I remember seeing the silent version where Ben-Hur tries to lead an army to save the Christ but is too late. That was quite different from the Wyler screenplay.

@lemaxmas Well, I'm currently re-reading the book and, while Wyler's version resembled it far more closely than this monstrosity, the book does revolve a bit more around Jesus Christ, his identity as the prophesied Christ and how Ben Hur's hoped involvement with him will supposedly (according to Simonides and his own imagination) better fulfill his own desire for revenge. Obviously revenge wasn't a part of Christ's ministry, but, yes Wyler's version honors the book better.

@lorrainewands Thanks. I did miss the character of Balthazar, who was such a significant part of the Wyler version. Plus the portrayal of the Christ was so powerful. In this remake they make the Christ seem like some guy and take away the real pivotal meaning of the relationship between Ben-Hur and how it transforms him, his family and the world around him.

Don't compare this version with the heston version - the heston version was a full blown blockbuster movie this is a made for tv mini series - personally i'm not a big fan of heston he has a tendancy to overact!

@gooangel2 I agree it was very good, and I would add the Hugh Bonneville was oustanding as Pontius Pilate too. He oozed authority and arrogance, but also showed the stress of his position. Really chilling the way he glared at Messala when demoting him early on.

I don't think this was intended to be shown theatrically.It's unfortunate this did not get aired on American TV.Making a TV remake of such an epic is always challenging.They did a very good job with this and actually it feels much more realistic than the Heston version, but both this and the Heston versions are good for what they set out to do.However,I would have liked to have seen Kristin Kreuk as Esther instead(but only because I'm a major fan!).She deserved to be the romantic lead.

The problem with these modern films of ancient times is that the characters are just too "modern" and unconvincing. It's impossible to know just exactly how people behaved in those times but a brilliant director like William Wyler (1959 Ben -Hur) used a more formal approach in speech avoiding contemporary trends and therefore creating a more convincing sense of period even if it was way off the mark.

This film should have copied the original by not showing Christ face. I know the religious aspect was taken out of the this version and I'm agnostic but whether you believe in Christianity or not that man was a great man. But even if he was a myth, it was much more theatrical to hide his face and keep that sense of awe about him.

The only reason I started to watch was because of Joseph Morgan, but then as I watched I really liked it. The story is incredible, and the ending was so Amazing. Juda has a very strong spirit and very kind. In the end he forgives his friend. How can a movie like this not have been in theaters. I never heard of it before until I saw it tribute video for TVD.

@MsStarrystars This wasn't released in theaters i'm sure because they don't dare try compete with the the Wyler theatrical release. That movie earned more oscars than any other film until Titantic. Many consider Wylers ver. to be the best film of all time. And I like this version but obviously it is not as good as the original although I do like that Marsala and Juda were friends at the end. Heston version was not as forgiving but Steven Boyd as Marsala was less forgivable.
