I'm brazillian and my english isn't very good, but I'm completely obsessed with A bit of Fry and Laurie and the british humor, I watch at least a sketch every day since I found a video of them *--*
Well, everybody's asking about M25, and though I never heard of it it was obvious that it's a crappy road of some kind, I don't get this "you can trust him with a peony and a cod" joke. What's that supposed to mean? Is this a literal version of some english expression? I typed it in google, but i found only references to this sketch. So I don't know, help please.
Lol no, it's not an expression, fry and laurie are just showing, through their unique and rather surreal means, that dominic appleguard is an insane and dangerous man, hence his behavior and disturbing obsessions.
and yes, it's a gigantic, confusing and poorly designed road that was designed as a highspeed access to and from the london area that has just turned into a hotspot for appalling levels of traffic congestions and accidents.
Trust me I have to deal with the 405 everyday in Los Angeles. A normally 20 minute drive takes me an hour and a half on a good day, I hope you don't have it that bad.
It's funny how it's only on F&L videos where loads of Americans feel they have to apologise for their nationality!
It's the ring road which is all the way around the suburbs of London. At rush hour, it always gets jammed, the whole way around, and if there's an accident, it's twice as bad!
it's about the English syntax - "Dominic's father died when HE was only seven" could mean "when DOMINIC was only seven" or "when THE FATHER was only seven". obviously they mean the latter as a joke, 'cause you can see Dominic's father in the picture that had been taken before he died - it's absurd, 'cause he couldn't have fathered Dominic, but that's the point. hope I helped you out :)
Like so much of Fry and Laurie's comedy, this is so delightfully insane. Was I the only one who wanted to hug crazy, crazy Dominic, just so he would stop salting his hair?
Incidentally, Dominic is one of my favorite names, and after watching this, I think I love it even more.
well, i watch the new ones. christopher eccleston is my favorite doctor and early rose is my favorite companion. i turned my friends onto doctor who as well. one of them reads/collects the books and/or magazines. doctor who's fun because it's silly and clever with lots of heart.
Thanks for pointing out that Hugh was the narrator for this sketch. Despite priding myself on being a big ABOFAL fan, I never suspected it was. [blushes]

Even the name. Appleguard. Makes me picture him at attention with rifle in hand, next to an apple, looking fierce.
