this is not for the fainthearted, but is pretty much as far as jazz ever got. After this it could only break apart and explode. Love Freddie's solos and the rhythm section cooking behind him. Herbie kills it.
@adamecomp I would say the Tony Williams of Trumpet! Buddy Rich was a prodigy (as was Tony) but Tony put much more passion into what he played. Buddy was more straightforward soloing, but still more complex than any other solo out there, hahaha!
ANd I regard Buddy Rich as one of the (if not THE) greatest jazz drummer ever. I just think Freddie and Tony's soloing style are more on point than Freddie and Buddy's!
what the damn hell happened to the VSOP doing cantaloupe island?? that was so wicked! and i was going to use it for a presentation. can we please have it?
I attended Freddie Hubbard's memorial service yesterday and Herbie Hancock spoke at some length about this very gig, how Freddie was in such command leading the attack. Thanks for posting this. How about part two? If anyone wants to hear some frightening Hubbard shredding, look up 'Freddie Hunnard Umbria' here on youtube (yes, with Hubbard misspelled as Hunnard)...then get ready to sh*t!
the hurricane is ONE MAN and ONE MAN ONLY... Tony Williams is the HURRICANE - the rest are just watching the STORM - RIP - TONY ... I love and miss you buddy- RF
Out Of Sight!!! I saw Herbie's VSOP in 1977 with Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and the electrifying Tony Williams but this was a very special treat with the Master Joe Henderson on tenor sax... Rest In Peace JH... Movin' Groovin' and Proving!!!

HAHA...those two people at 7:00 are Harry Pickens and Michel Petrucciani. The tallest and shortest jazz pianists hanging out together. Priceless!

Hey man, Petrucciani ain't short: He's my brother. And he can play his ass off.
