wondering if i can get some measurements on ur overflow. how long is it? other youtubers have longer overflow but i like yours better since it is short. you mentioned in a comment that the vacuum would break if it isnt deep enough so just wondering how deep is yours.
@dinhy34 cool - I'll get the measurements for you - at the moment I'm on holiday but as soon as I'm back home, I'll get the measurements and reply to you with them.
@184445 I used 40mm pipes and using a 3000l/h pump for my tank - works like a bomb. The PVC piping is a bit ugly at first, but having run it for 2 years now, it's covered in coraline algae and looks awesome.
How far down should the intake pipe go? As in how far down inside the aquarium, could it be made very close to the top? Sorry if this doesn't make much sense.
@Siukaay it needs to be deepish as if it were made too shallow, the vacuum would be easily broken if air got into the piece taking the water over and out of the tank.
@neffin for sure!! we have quite a lot of power outages where I live, and sometimes for 6-8 hours at a time, and when it happens, I'm usually at work, so when the power does come back on, because the vacuum isn't broken, everything works as it did without anything flooding and without any human intervention.
@fcsail next time be more specific - video lighting? tank lighting? I posted to give a general idea of my setup - sorry, I didn't have the budget for a whole production crew.
@drewumberger loose prime? you mean loose the siphon? No, the strange design of the piping prevents that from happening - for instance, in the chance of a power failure, the water will overflow to the sump till a certain level where no more can, but the siphon will not be broken, allow it to start up automatically when the power returns.
Dude how did u make that cheap over flow box? how many pvc pipes I need and how did u drain the water from the pvc over flow to the sump tank please tell me how to make one thanks?
You want to make sure the "return" side of your sump only holds as much water as your display can handle. If a snail or fish goes down your overflow tube the pump is going to keep filling the tank without water overflowing. So if your tank can hold 1-2 gallons of extra water, you want your return side of the sump to hold that amount. You can just put the pump on a stand to raise it if you dont want to re-do baffles. Also a fish/snail guard would be a good idea!
Excellent - was hoping to redo the overflow with a DIY perspex/plexiglass version, but been looking around our area, and can't seem to find a shop selling either.
how easily was it for you to get the glass to sit right for silicon when you were building the tank?

How much gph you getting with this pvc overflow?
Whats the pipe diameter you have?
I'm trying to figure out my pvc overflow design, I have a mag 12 for return. I'm doing a 55g frag tank with 30g sump.

. . . . weres the fish?

does it still work even with the slower pump?i mean the water return is a bit smaller than the capacity of the pipe?
neffin 1 year ago
@neffin yes. The return must be less than the overflow capacity or it will flood the main tank.

If the water level becomes to low do you loose prime?

what is that cap you removed for?
boulehead 2 years ago
The cap prevents the overflow from sounding like a drain - it dampens the noise of the water flowing through the pipes.
