When the American border guard asks Llewelyn what outfit he was in Vietnam, the answer is "12th Infantry Battalion." This answer wouldn't make any sense to anyone familiar with how the army is organized and in fact would indicate that Llewelyn had never been in the army. (Every infantry regiment has ad-hoc numbered battalions. No regiment has as many as 12.) An infantry soldier would identify his unit by company and regiment, or just by regiment. Very clever line in this movie. Got to love it
@PaparoniFilms Hi...I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. I looked it up...it seems to be because of the fact that it is a historic army unit. " In 1957, the Army decided that tactical infantry regiments were obsolete" "To preserve the historic infantry regiments the Army set up the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS) whereby the line companies of a regiment would form new elements of the regiment. The 12th Infantry was selected as one of the historic regiments to be preserved."
@SaraTGinMD ...Hi, did you read my earlier comment?...I believe there were three 12th infantry battalions in Vietnam....It was several months ago that I wrote that comment.
@orangedac when something looks fishy (like a man crossing a border dressed like that), people with the authority to ask questions will ask questions. That's how they sometimes find more fishy things.
This is one of the best scenes. And the one right after it where he goes into the clothing store wearing just his boots and the hospital gown. "How are them Larry's?"
Always pisses me off that this scene got deleted from the TV version. This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie granted the whole movie is my favorite scene.

a.m.c. cuts this scene out when that lame network airs this movie. i suppose so they can have more time to air their endless commercials.

This is one of the best bit parts I've ever seen. And very well-acted too.

@51actual Yes but he says "battalion" not "regiment" They are two entirely different things.

@PaparoniFilms
So was his reply wrong? You're saying that it indicates Llewelyn had never been in the army, but then again claim it's a clever line.

@PaparoniFilms you don't make any sense.

@PaparoniFilms or it could just be fictitious since it's a movie and all

does the border guard not believe he is American?
why would he not be able to get back into America with or without proper clothes?
