  • Skinny? The guy must not see me all too well lol.

  • What is a Kasha Varnishkes?. It just sounds like a name. I think i have heard it long ago.

  • Is it still authentic to eat this with gravy?

  • LOLOL "I might use more when the camera's off" CHEATER!!! good job by the way :)

  • I'm glad he left out the egg. I'm vindicated! To me, the egg is totally useless and not needed when cooking kasha, at all.

  • How could you leave out the egg?

Add 1 egg or egg white to dry Kasha in frying pan. Heat and stir until egg is dry. Then proceed as above.

  • Must try this...bought a package of buckwheat groats at Eastern European store and haven't used it yet...my sister married a Jewish man and his mother was the epitomy of "and you,...you're too skinny...eat...EAT!!!" I miss her!!! Mark Bittman, you always make me smile...love your videos!

  • A lot of onions even more "smalec" and a lot of "kasza". This is the way I remember it.

  • Love the "Jewish" touch at the end...

    Thanks!

  • And you ... Your So Skinny, you need to eat some more, Whats wrong with you Eat Eat ... Lol Toatly what my grandparents would say good ending lol haha im makeing this for my class finanl wish me luck ;D

  • Classic!

"And you... What is it with you?... so skinny!...

    You need to eat!"

  • Bittman didn't coat the groats with egg and then toast it. Hmm...I'll bet his mom mentioned that to him. Otherwise it's pretty much the recipe I remember. I LOVE kasha varnishkes.

  • How about kasha+goulash. We never mix kasha with pasta before:))

  • How about "gribbis"?

  • I love your videos - brings back many memories of a time so dear to my heart.

    Thank you.

  • For all you that hate onions, including myself, they can be cooked without them and still come out great.

  • I would soak those buckwheat groats the day before cooking them.. Looks yum, I should not watch cooking videos while fasting...

  • There's a similar recipe that is very popular in northern Serbia. Only there you mix pasta with meshed potatoes (creamy with butter, milk, blackpapper and optionally some ground nutmeg). When it's mixed you add fried onions like bittman did in the video.

    I promise, it's damn good!!!!

  • I love Bittman's recipes. Makes me wish they'd do a channel that just has The Minimalist. I'm already subscribed to his Best Recipes in the World channel, but recipes like this one have me wishing they'd do a channel with just these recipes.

  • ... "and you, you're so skinny, eat, eat,it is good! What is wrong with you!" Great vid! Great food, great vid, great style.

  • What's a good substitute for chicken fat? (I live in Wisconsin.

"Wisconsin" and "schmaltz" do not belong in the same sentence.)

  • Go to Milwaukee. I guarantee, you'll get all the schmaltz you need. GREAT Jewish community there.
