i prefer hawaiian hula to tahitian, i dont get it. isn't there a story to their dancing or is it just shaking their hips for attraction. someone explain
I guess u've missed the point. It may seem to a person that doesn't know a clue, it may just seem like hip shaking, but if u look closer, at her movements, her hands, her speed, her expression, u'll see that she's telling a story.
that's common for all polynesian dancing, it's not just a dance. These dances picted everyday life, or could be more serious like during a ceremony, or just plain entertainment for family and friends=)
I know why some would see this as vulgar, b'cuz they do the american comp. tahitian style, where it's more important to be fast, and to do a fast fa'rapuu, and not what ur suposed to do, to tell a story. and I guess since they don't do movesl ike this them selves, they say it's vulgar...
well there are huge differences. But that's common for people who doesn'r really care. That goes for everything like race. Many ''white'' people can't tell the difference between people from asia, for them every ''asian looking'' person means that they are from China, are small and eats rice. A mix between no interest what so ever, lack of know how, and even racism=)
Mereani Tumehai is the fittest dancer I have ever seen. I think from another clip, this dance is about a nature goddess who humans don't listen to..they poison her to near death. amazing performer.
your right im NOT tahitian, just speaking my mind; ok so yea, good to hear your thoughts:) im sure FEW people may agree with me; but then again those who dont would obviously are the ones watching.
Luv Mereani! When wad this and where?

As I have posted in other comments it is all about beat, rythm and interpretation..they either have it or they don't..it is all a matter of time..

um thats not just her "style", thats the way real tahitian dance is, not that fake shit you see at luaus
tahitian dance is all about telling a story, and thats exactly what shes doing.
autreeisthebest 2 years ago
okayyy:P glad you feel that way...
i stio DONT but glad you feel that way:)
she can frickin dance, NO doubt bout that
but if thats what real tahitian dance is then im mistaken; YES i know its beyond looking pretty and
farapuing all cute; but your STYLE; the way you tell
this storryyyyyy, is what dace is....
yeea shes really authentic in her dancing, but
TRADITION dont have to be vulgar with legs
wide open and runnin all over...
teinelelei93 2 years ago
i don't think you're tahitian, so you prolly aren't familiar with what is traditional, but this certainly is not vulgar.
i know that this is your opinion, but in terms of a culture, i wouldn't critique it unless you absolutely know what you're talking about.
i'm not trying to argue, but this is definately not vulgar, it's a traditional style that is difficult to do.

coooollll
i wasn't trying to be mean and you are entitled to your own opinion, i just tried to explain my thoughts on it too
autreeisthebest 2 years ago
I agree, I hate it when some dance just to "shake it". I always like a story behind every piece.
